A Song of Ice and Fire
A majority of the first book is about the Starks, more specifically Ned Stark, the Lord of House Stark, and the problems within the Seven Kingdoms.
The second part of the book is about the exiled princess Daenerys and how she deals with that.
The third part is about Jon Snow, the son that was born out of wedlock to Ned Stark and how he grows up as one of the Night Watchmen, protectors of the Seven Kingdoms.
Martin has created a rich world filled with characters whose desires for love and power drive them to extremes of nobility and betrayal"(Gale 75)
"vast rich saga, with splendid characters and intricate plot flawlessly articulated against a backdrop of real depth and texture."(Gale 74)
"It is fascinating to watch Martin's characters mature and grow, especially the Stark's children." (Gale 74)
" The story itself is enormous and richly textured, though at its center are the Starks of Winterfell, a ruling family whose fortunes are followed through several members, including young Bran, whose decision at the beginning to adopt a dire wolf echoes through the book." (Bleiler 4)
A Game of Thrones makes use of Martin’s interests in chess and has obvious debts to Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, but unlike Tolkien’s work, it has strong female characters and blends fantasy, horror, and mystery. (Bleilen 5)
A Song of Ice and Fire should be chosen because:
-Well reviewed by critics
-One of the best books of the century
-Lots of lessons
Why is it that when one man builds a wall, the next man immediately needs to know what's on the other side?” (Martin 107)
