"Hills Like White Elephants" By Ernest Hemingway Exposition In the exposition we are given the circumstances of the two character identified as, "The American and the girl with him." The couple is sitting outside a train station waiting for the next train to "Madrid." Rising Action In the rising action the couple is talking about ordering beer while waiting for their train. The converstaion turns to the hills on the side of the station, and the girl explains the hills to look like "White Elephants." This brings the converstion to the characters debating whether of not the the decision of a "procedure" is the right choice for them. Climax The climax occurs when Jig ends the conversation, saying,
"Would you please please please please please please please stop talking?” Falling Action The falling action in the story is when the American asks the girl how she is feeling. After a smile, she replies by saying, "I feel fine." "There's nothing wrong with me. I feel fine." Denouement The denouement is found when the couple has another drink. The action is winding down when the American has a drink at the bar, when he is walking back to the girl, and when he walks through the curtain. Unfortunitly we don't know how things will end for the couple.
