Escape (The Pina Colada Song) -Rupert Holmes
Choice
Internal Rhyme
Internal Rhyme- rhymes occuring within a poetic line.

Ex: I was tired of my lady, we'd been together too
long
Like a worn out recording of a favorite
song
So while she lay there sleepin' I read the paper in
bed
And in the personal columns, there was this letter I
read
Hyperbole
Hyperbole- a deliberate exaggeration.

Ex: If you like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain
If you're not into yoga,
if you have half a brain
Paradox
Paradox-an apparent contradiction that is actually true.

Ex: So I wrote to the paper, took out a personal ad
And though
I'm nobody's poet
, I thought it wasn't half bad
Theme
The theme of this song is to make you be in a happy mood. The true meaning of this song is a man that is losing interest in his girl while at the same time she loses interest in him. While they are searching for someone new, they find eachothers interests in an ad in the newspaper and gain affection for eachother again. They were meant to be but just lost knowledge of eachothers interests.
Music and Lyrics
Alliteration
Alliteration- repeating consonant sounds at the beginning of words.

Ex: If you like
making
love at
midnight
in the dunes of the cape
Then I'm the
love
that you've
looked
for, write to me and escape
Idiom
I didn't think about my lady, I know that sounds kind of mean
But me and my
old lady
had fallen into the same old dull routine
Escape or mostly known as the "The Pina Colada Song" was performed by Rupert Holmes. I like this song because it is very laid back and catchy. Also, I chose this song because I felt that it would have many poetic devices in there. I do not listen to any other songs by this artist.
By him saying "Old Lady" hes referring her as his long time girlfriend or wife.
Dialogue
Dialogue- conversation between two or more people as a feature of a book, play, or movie.

Ex: It was my own lovely lady and she said, "
Aw, it's you
."
Then we laughed for a moment and I said, "
I never knew."
Imagery
Imagery- Describing something using the five senses.

Ex.
That you like piña coladas (taste)
and

gettin' caught in the rain
And
the feel of the ocean (touch)
and
the taste of champagne (touch)
If you like making love at midnight in the dunes on the cape
You're the lady I've looked for, come with me and escape
Allusion
Allusion-a reference to another story, historical event, movie, song, TV show, etc.

Ex: If you like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain
If you're not into yoga, if you have half a brain
If you like making love at midnight in the dunes on the
cape
Then I'm the love that you've looked for, write to me and escape
Euphemism
Euphemism-a mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing.

Ex: I'm not much into health food, I am into champagne
I've got to meet you by tomorrow noon and cut
through all this red tape
The
Music and Lyrics
The instrumental of the song makes you think the song is a happy song. The lyrics are actually talking about a relationship going through a tough time until the end when it all falls back in place correctly. When you listen to the song it tends to put you in a good mood. The instruments played are a guitar and a piano.
