Digital Artifact: Hamlet
Description of Artifact:
Soundtrack of Hamlet (2 songs for each act)
Summary/explanation of specific skills/learning outcomes that artifact demonstrates:
This artifact demonstrates the connection between Hamlet and modern era. Not only does creating this mix-tape help analyze the characters better, but it also helps contribute to comprehend on a more interpretive level. Moreover, the songs are like a soliloquy that reveals the mood, opinion, or motive of the speaker. Each song chosen corresponds with important scenes of all five acts.
Challenges or Areas for Continued Learning:
In the Drama unit, some areas that I found challenging were translating from Shakespearean language to a more modern English. Since Shakespearean plays have a lot of description, it was difficult to summarize because the the true meaning of scenes lied within a detailed amount of words. I aspire to improve on this area by identifying key words in the scene and writing the summary based on those at end of each scene. Furthermore, making connections will help me better analyze the speaker.
Soundtrack for Hamlet
Act 1
Ghost by Fefe Dobson
In the beginning of the Act 1, the men standing guard see a ghost that looks exactly like the dead King. Although they are not sure if it's good or the devil.
Important lyrics:
You act like you just saw a ghost,
I watch you getting way too close...
The only gift that you ever gave
Was that you let me just get away
I hope I haunt you in every dream
And you feel a little misery
Marry me by Train
Important lyrics:
Forever can never be long enough for me
To feel like I've had long enough with you
Forget the world now, we won't let them see
But there's one thing left to do
Now that the weight has lifted
Love has surely shifted my way
Marry me...
Now that the wait is over
And love has finally shown her my way

The wedding celebrations of Claudius
and Gertrude. It seemed like Claudius and
Gertrude were secretly in love when the
King was alive.
Act 2
Story of us by Taylor Swift
Important lyrics:
I used to think one day we'd tell the story of us,
How we met and the sparks flew instantly,
People would say, "They're the lucky ones."
I used to know my place was a spot next to you,
Now I'm searching the room for an empty seat,
'Cause lately I don't even know what page you're on.
How'd we end up this way?
See me nervously pulling at my clothes and trying to look busy,
And you're doing your best to avoid me.
I'm starting to think one day I'll tell the story of us,
How I was losing my mind when I saw you here,
But you held your pride like you should've held me.
Hamlet is acting crazy and Ophelia reports to her father on how mad Hamlet has been acting lately.
Backstabbers by The O'Jays
Important lyrics:
I keep gettin' all these visits
From my friends, yeah, what they doin to me
They come to my house
Again and again and again and again, yeah
So are they there to see my woman
I don't even be home but they just keep on comin'
What can I do to get on the right track
I wish they'd take some of these knives off my back
Rosencrantrz and Guildenstren
sheepishly lie to Hamlet that they came to Elsinore for his father's funeral, but in fact they were spying on Hamlet on behalf of Claudius' orders.
Act 3
Kill myself by Tim McGraw
Important lyrics:
The drastic steps I'm takin'
Are just an act of desperation
I knew no one would miss me
So what the hell
I fought and lied I drank too much...
And I thank God
The devil in me died
I stand before you now
A man changed and alive.
Hamlet is contemplating whether he should commit suicide or suffer by living. To be or not to be.
Red by Taylor Swift
Important Lyrics:
Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead-end street
Faster than the wind, passionate as sin, ending so suddenly
Loving him is like trying to change your mind once you're already flying through the free fall
Like the colors in autumn, so bright just before they lose it all
Losing him was blue like I'd never known
Missing him was dark grey all alone
Forgetting him was like trying to know somebody you never met
But loving him was red
Loving him was red
Ophelia is forced to break up with Hamlet, so his madness can be proven that he is suffering from love sickness, and is not just completely insane.
Act 4
My Little Girl by Tim McGraw
Important Lyrics:
You're beautiful baby from the outside in.
Chase your dreams but always know the road that'll lead you home again.
Go on, take on this whole world.
But to me you know you'll always be, my little girl...
When you were in trouble that crooked little smile could melt my heart of stone.
Now look at you, I've turned around and you've almost grown.
Sometimes you're asleep I whisper "I Love You!" in the moonlight at your door.
As I walk away, I hear you say, "Daddy Love You More!".
Ophelia has gone mad because of her father's death. This song is about Polonius saying goodbye to Ophelia.
Act 5
Goodbye My Lover by James Blunt
Important lyrics:
Did I disappoint you or let you down?
Should I be feeling guilty or let the judges frown?
'Cause I saw the end before we'd begun,
Yes I saw you were blinded and I knew I had won.
I am here for you if you'd only care.
You touched my heart you touched my soul.
You changed my life and all my goals.
And love is blind and that I knew when,
My heart was blinded by you.
I've kissed your lips and held your hand.
Shared your dreams and shared your bed.
I know you well, I know your smell.
I've been addicted to you.
Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.
Hamlet arrives at Elsinore and is greeted with Ophelia's funeral procession. Laertes and Hamlet both fight over who loves Ophelia more.
Highway to Hell by AC/DC
Important lyrics:
No stop signs
Speed limit
Nobody's gonna slow me down
Like a wheel
Gonna spin it
Nobody's gonna mess me around
Hey satan
Payin' my dues
Playin' in a rockin' band
Hey mumma
Look at me
I'm on the way to the promised land
I'm on the highway to hell
Highway to hell
I'm on the highway to hell
Highway to hell
Hamlet has just found out that Claudius was the cause of his mother's death. So Hamlet brutally kills Claudius to avenge both his mother's and father's murder. Claudius will go to hell because his murderous deeds.
Important lyrics:
If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song...
And I'll be wearing white, when I come into your kingdom
I'm as green as the ring on my little cold finger,
I've never known the lovin' of a man
But it sure felt nice when he was holdin' my hand,
There's a boy here in town, says he'll love me forever,
Gertrude reports that Ophelia has drowned. I believe this song outlines what Ophelia might be thinking of when she was weaving flowers down by the river.
If I Die Young by The Band Perry
The End
Comic Strip
Comic strip of Act 5 Scene 5
From this artifact I've learned to summarize the key events in my own words.
Some areas that I found challenging were finding the best words that describe the detailed scenes. I intend to improve on my vocabulary by reading variety of texts for enjoyment.
Summary and Analysis of Hamlet
From this artifact, like the previous one, I've learned to summarize key events in the play and discover the common elements that appear in Shakespearean Tragedy (Contrast, Fate, Supernatural, Pathetic Fallacy, Nemesis, Catharsis, Suspense, Soliloquy, Aside, Dramatic Irony, Humor and Spectacular).
Some areas that I found challenging were identifying the common elements of Shakespearean Tragedy while reading the play. I intend to improve on this by practicing the terms and writing out.
