The History Of Sketch Comedy
1800's -1919
- Sketch comedy Held roots in both the United Kingdom, and in America in the form of Vaudeville (American/Canada) and Music Hall (United Kingdom)
The Marx Brothers - A comedy troop that was made up of 4 brothers. The brothers were immigrants that moved to America. They started in Vaudeville shows in NYC.
The Brothers then moved onto preform bigger sketch shows all over the country . In their later years they started acting in films from the 1920's through 1940's
Stage vaudeville shows were being more and more of a novelty, sketch comedy was changing media outlets. Sketches were heard on the radio, and seen in movie formats.
The Three Stooges
Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy- Popular from the 1920's through the 1940's known for slapstick comedy.

Sketch Comedy has had a large impact on society and has been around for over 100 years!
What is "Sketch Comedy"?
Sketch comedy is a bunch of short scenes preformed by comedians and actors.

- Started in Vaudiville shows
-Stared in over 1000 Silent and non-silent films
Abbott & Costello
late 1930’s till early 1950’s both came from Vaudeville families in the early 1900’s.
Costello was an aspiring actor (worked with laurel and hardy) but didn’t get big.
Abbott was a successful live performer.
They met at a live Vaudeville show and hit it off. In
Age Of Slapstick!
1936 they hooked up for a show. They performed a sketch on the Kate smith radio hour…who’s on first! After this Abbott & Costello became extremly famous.

Many sketch comedy shows started in this time period, most only lasted a season or two.
Two shows that changed sketch comedy; And TV forever were-The first was "Your show of shows" second is "Monty Pythons Flying Circus"

Fun Fact - Both stars of the show started in vaudeville shows
Monty Pythons Flying Circus
This show started in the year 1969 - 1974. It was aired on BBC, and fetured an all british cast.

Though the show only ran for 5 years, the original group was responsable for many other things.

Also inspired many other comedians to start sketch comedy
-one of the most beloved sketch comedy groups of all time, pop culture icons
-together from 1925-1970, various projects from TV shows to movies
-never recieved critical acclaim until years after their deaths

-specialized in "slapstick" and other physical comedy

In this time frame we see shows becoming more main stream.
