The Effects of Social Media on Today's Teenagers
Another very big problem when it comes to social media in today' society is identity thieves. Identity thieves are people that roam social media sites, find someone with a lot of personal information available, and then, they find out as much as possible as about this person, finally they live up to their names, and steal this person's identity. This mean that they pretend to be that person to do thing such as, opening new bank accounts, buying new cars, and even committing crimes. Nowadays, employers are looking more and more on social media site for potential employees, but also to check on their current employees to see what really goes on in their workers lives outside of work. Because of this, 33% of potential employees have been rejected, or fired from a work place.
Cyber Bullying
Bullying on social media sites has become one of societies most hated problems. Today 1 in 3 people will have been bullied on the internet and 1 in 4 people will have had it happen to them more than once. Cyber bullying is a process: first the bully chooses its victim, second they start sending or posting mean thing on the internet, third the hate starts to grow, and more people start to participate in the bullying one person, fourth, the victim can start up a depression, which can then lead to self harm/suicidal thoughts. Thankfully, not all cases of cyber bullying finish their process, some of them (the cases are stopped by friends/authorities before they have the chance to grow.
Internet Addiction Disorder
You would never guess that there is a disorder for obsessed internet users, but, sadly there is. The average internet addict will spend a minimum of four hours on the internet. This time period is usually spent on social media sites as Twitter, Facebook, Vine etc.

Introduction
For my independent studies, I decided I would try to find out the effect that social media has on today's teenagers. For this project, I will be interviewing friends and family, I will also list some of the dangers of social media. I will be comparing social media sites. Lastly I will also be talking about the basic effect that social media has on our life.
Today, social media is used by 90% of teenagers, which can also be thought of as 9 out of 10. Social media is now, not only used as a tool of communication, but also for broadcasting and advertising . Sadly, social media is a very fast way to spread untrue things, for example, at the Boston bombing, someone posted a picture of a little girl saying she was the eight year old that had been killed. After only a few hours of being on the internet, this untrue piece of information had gone viral. It has been estimated that by 2017, there will be about 2.55 billion people who have, but not necessarily use their social media account, whether it be on Facebook or Twitter.

Social Media vs. Our Self Confidence
Not many people actually consider that social media could be one of the reason that people feel bad about themselves. For example: on Tumblr, there is such a thing called "Tumblr girls", which are a group of gorgeous thin, happy girls. Now, from a normal perspective, you wouldn't see the problem. But, when a website has thousands of users, and the majority of the pictures they see are pretty faces, you would guess that this could make anyone feel bad about themselves. And, it can happen that when you start to feel to bad about yourself, that you can develop eating disorders, or even mental problems.

Local Problems

Last year, my mom told me about something very serious that happened right here in Ottawa. It was about a group of teenagers girls, two of them to be exact, in between the ages of 16-18, who did something horrible with the help of the internet.

These girls started chatting with local teenaged girls. They earned the trust of these girls. Now you might ask, whats the problem with chatting with someone? Here's the thing, the girls who were chatted had absolutely no idea who the people they were talking to were. So that's a bit of a problem...

After a while of talking to these innocent teenagers, the girls, invited them over to there house. The worst is just starting... What these girls did to the innocent teenagers is discusting, they stole the teenaged girl clothes, and replaced it with barely there clothes. And then, they forced the girls to go and become prostitutes.
One of the victims was only thirteen! Now the one thing about this victim was that she was sent to the house of a man, and the men let her into her house, but when she got into the house, she told the man everything! This man, being a nice person, called the police and told them what the girl had told him. The girls behing this horrible scheme were later arrested.

Now a little fact, one of the girls who was behind this crime, her hearing actually happened in October!

One thing that can promote IAD is being popular on things like Vine or Youtube. The reason these websites can promote IAD is because, if you get popular enough, the company will pay you to make videos! Sure it sounds great, but when you think about it, the super popular youtubers are getting paid not only to spend all their time in front of a screen, but the are also encouraging other people to come and spend all their time in front of screen to watch their videos.
As you can see, Facebook has many more features than Twitter, so in the end, maybe that's why it has more users?
Conclusion
In the end, I have learnt so much from doing this project. I have also raised my awareness on internet safety. I also learnt about problems the internet causes, and I am now 100 times more careful. I had such a fun time making this project!
