Big Jobs for Small People By Ally Aves What is Child Labor??? Child Labor is hard work that harms children and keeps them from going to school. All around the world, the gaps between the rich and the poor in the recent 10 years have forced small and big children to work instead of learning. Very young kids work at a bunch of different jobs because their family is very poor. The International Labor Organization estimates that 215 million children between the ages of of 5 and 17 are currently working in conditions that are hazardous1 or considered illegal. A lot of kids work in mining, commercial agriculture, fishing, manufacturing and domestic service. Some kids even work in illegal activities such as the drug trade. hazardous1: dangerous, unpredictable Footnote: One of the biggest chocolate manufacturers in America, Hershey’s Chocolate, has some people wondering their willingness to properly supervise the working conditions in West Africa. In West Africa, the formation of child labor has become more common. Kids work in West Africa for barely anything in return under unbearable conditions. Hershey’s didn’t seem to realize that in West Africa, they have no laws against hiring children as young as 5 years old. All Hershey’s knows is that they have a place in West Africa that bags all the coco beans and ships it to America so they can make money by making and selling their Hershey’s Chocolate to the Americans who love it.
