An Abundance of Katherines is a novel based on the struggles of Colin Singleton, a seventeen-year-old prodigy who has only dated girls named Katherine.
Colin's best friend, Hassan, convinces him to go on a road trip.
This is where Lindsey, Colin's future love interest, is introduced.
While on the road trip, Colin, Hassan and Lindsey encounter many ups an downs, but eventually grasp the significance of friendship and what the future holds.
Love and Relationships
A theme that is immediately made evident in the novel is love. This theme is portrayed in the novel through Colin’s interest in relationships, as well as his overwhelming desire to be in a relationship.
Individuality is a very prominent theme in the novel. Colin and Lindsey illustrate this theme through their shared desire to be unique.
A significant theme in the novel is knowledge. Being knowledgeable and intelligent was incredibly important to Colin as it reflected the way he portrayed himself.
Dreams and Future Plans
Dreams and future plans are an evident theme in the novel. Colin was interested in becoming a world-renowned genius, rather than just a mere child prodigy.
Memory and the Past
Living in the past is a prominent theme throughout the novel. Through Colin's continuous retelling of his memories with his ex-girlfriend, Katherine, it was made evident that he was having a difficult time letting go of his relationship with her.
Connection Within the Themes
Looking deeper into the novel, it can be assumed that all of these themes come together to send home the message of unfamiliarity with yourself.
