Transcript of Thesis Statement
By: Jenny Benitez &
Setting is the time and place that the story takes place in. In the story, " The Sniper ", we know the setting is in Ireland during civil war, and in the month of June 1922 because of "The long June twilight faded into night." this is letting us know that the war took in the month of June, and " Republicans and Free Staters were waging civil war ". This evidence clearly shows the reader that the setting is in the month of June and it takes place in 1922 during civil war.
Falling action is the fallout of the climax caused by the character's choice in the climax. The falling action of the story " The Sniper " is when the republican sniper finds out he killed his own brother. Evidence that reveals this is " Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother's face. " because this reveals that the republican sniper felt thrilled of what he had done at first, before knowing that he had been against his own brother.
Conflict is when there is a struggle between two opposing forces. The conflict in the story " The Sniper " is external because it is clearly man.vs.man. " The sniper raised his rifle and fired. " and " Almost immediately there was a report, and a bullet pierced the center of the cap. " reveals this conflict because it is clearly showing that it is man.vs.man, because it is showing actions that are external towards the characters.
The complication of a story is when the plot develops and more problems arise. the complication that arise in the Rising action of the story " The Sniper " is when the republican sniper fires at opposing sniper on the opposite rooftop because, " The lust of battle died in him ". " He became bitten by remorse ". This evidence reveals that the republican sniper is feeling guilty for what he did, it is also demonstrating that the republican sniper felt remorseful and ashamed of what he had just done.
There is no resolution in this story, because after the Republican sniper kills the enemy sniper he goes to see the identity of the enemy sniper whom he killed. When the Republican sniper discovers the enemy sniper he killed is his brother.
Characters are people who interact in the story. In the story, " The Sniper ", We know the main character is the republican sniper, however , there are secondary characters which are, the opposing sniper ( the brother ), and the old woman known as the ( informer ). Some direct characterization shown is " He decided to take the risk " this evidence shows the reader that the characters motivations are risky, dangerous, and hazardous.
Climax is the " Turning point " also know as the " game changer ". The Climax of the story " The Sniper " is when the republican sniper shoots the opposing sniper leaving him dead, and when he finally takes a look at his face and realizes its his own brother. Evidence that reveals this is " He wondered did he know him" , and " He decided to risk going over to have a look at him"., because the republican sniper doesn't know who was the person he killed. Once he finds out everything will change. He will start to feel guilt in himself for killing his own brother.
Mood is is the feeling that a reader gets while reading the story. The mood of the story " The Sniper " is when the republican sniper shoots the opposing sniper. Evidence that reveals this is " He became bitten by remorse ", and " The lust of battle died in him ", because this is revealing that this character feels guilty for what he had done. The character had felt relieved at first for killing his opponent, but if he had realized it sooner he would have never killed his brother.
Irony is the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite. The irony in the story " The Sniper" is when the republican sniper starts to curse everything around him. This is clearly an example of dramatic irony. The evidence that reveals this is " His teeth chattered, he began to gibber to himself, cursing the war, cursing himself, cursing everybody ", because the republican sniper doesn't really mean anything he is gibbering about, he is really just relieved that the war is over and he really doesn't know who the enemy is at the beginning of the story.
