Flow Charts
Flow charts are;
Simple Easy-to-understand diagrams showing how steps fit together.

The act of mapping out a process in flow chart format helps clarify peoples understanding of the processes.

It helps you to see where a process could be improved.

Main Uses of flow charts
Define and analyse processes.
Gives a clear step-by-step picture of processes for analysis, discussion or communication.
Standardize, define or find areas that require improving.
Oval
Denotes the beginning or end of
a program
Follow line
The arrow shows the direction
of intended flow
Shows instructions or actions that
has to be made by the user
Rectangle
Diamond
Shows that decision has to be made
by the user
Parallelogram
Input or Output
Keyboard
The keyboard is for
manual input by the user
Circle (Off page connector)
The circle connects to another
page or another section of the
chart, this is different to the arrows

The cylinder represents a data file or data base, a hard drive is referred to as direct access storage seeing as any sector on the drive can be accessed.
A tape is sequential access storage as the data has to be read sequentially.
