Chemistry: The Study of Matter
Newhouse Scienceon 24 October 2012
Transcript of Chemistry: The Study of Matter
Atoms Atoms make up matter
The atom is the smallest part of an element
Chemical element Carbon.
This element of Carbon is made up of only Carbon atoms Made up of only one type of atom
Chemical symbols represent elements
ex. S=Sulfur, Fe=Iron, Au=Gold
Atomic number: number of protons
Atomic mass: number of protons+neutrons Elements Atoms are made up of protons, neutrons, electrons 16
197 A compound is formed when two or more atoms of different elements chemically combine
When different elements combine to become a compound, individual elements loose original properties
Compounds Molecules A molecule is formed when two or more
atoms chemically combine. They can be
Molecule is smallest part of compound
Diatomic molecules are made of two
atoms of the same element and do not
loose original properties
ex. Similarities: Elements make up molecules and compounds
Formulas represent molecules and compounds Composed of two or more different materials
They are physically combined
No chemical reaction occurs; retain original properties
Heterogeneous mixture: composition is not the same throughout; made of different substances. Individual properties are observable.
Fruit salad, Chex Mix
Homogenous mixture: composition is same throughout
Mixtures Anything that has mass and takes up space
