Transcript of Attempts to censor Of Mice and Men

Censorship is the practice of checking books, plays, news reports, movies, letters, etc., for the purpose of overpowering parts that are thought to be objectionable on moral, political, military, or other grounds.
In this book there is euthanasia, which can cause people to question whether or not students should read the book. Euthanasia is the practice of killing a patient(s) who have been suffering.
There is profanity and generally offensive language that most schools do not allow.
Of Mice and Men
has been banned by several schools across not only the United States but across the world.
Another reason this book is banned from several schools is because of the disability activists. This book calls mentally handicapped people "dumb", "retarded", "stupid", and many other names, and calls physically handicapped people "deformed", "crippled", "broken", and "useless".
Also, this book is questionable because of the violent references. This book involves a few physical fights, two human deaths, and one animal death. This is a sensitive topic for many people who have lost loved ones or even pets.
Yes, the book did get banned in some schools. Some people(probably) could not handle some of the subjects because a lot of people can relate to at least one in this book.
Some schools(like ours) did not ban the book because of the theme and history tied into the book. Yes, it might have touchy parts to it but it teaches students a great message and about America's history.

Censorship
Definition
Censorship applies especially to schools because they have to have books, movies, etc., approved by the principle, county, and parents. I think that it is a good idea (in theory) for them to approve, but the problem is that some of the books that are questionable you can learn so much from.

"In western history the very term censorship takes on a whole new meaning with the introduction of the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. Pope Paul IV ordered the first Index of Prohibited Books in 1559. The Index was issued again 20 times by different popes. The last Index of Prohibited Books was issued as recently as 1948, and then finally abolished in 1966. These lists of books banned for their heretical or ideologically dangerous content, were issued by the Roman Catholic Church."
