Borderline Personality Disorder
Causes
-No single cause by itself is responsible for causing BPD

-Researchers think BPD is caused by a combination of factors, such as:
-difficult childhood
-genetic factors
-your personality in general

-Biological and environmental risk factors interact to reach a certain critical level of brain dysfunction in order for the symptoms of BPD to become apparent

Facts about BPD
Nearly 75% of people that are diagnosed with BPD are women.
More individuals have BPD than schizophrenia and bipolar disorder combined.
Suicide is a real concern for individuals who have BPD, the percentage of individuals who commit suicide with this disorder is about 8-10 percent. This puts these individuals among the highest risk for suicide attempts.

BPD is mainly treated with psychotherapy, medications can be added
Doctors may recommend hospitalization if safety at risk
No medications have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration specifically for BPD
Medications for for co-occurring problems such as depression, impulsiveness, aggression or anxiety may help with symptoms
Medications may include:
antidepressants
antipsychotics
mood-stabilizing drugs
Psychotherapy
Also called "talk through" therapy
Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT)
Schema-focused therapy
Mentalization-based therapy (MBT)
talk therapy
helps identify own thoughts and feelings
MBT emphasizes thinking before reacting
Systems training for emotional predictability and problem-solving (STEPPS)
Transference-focused psychotherapy (TFP)
Focus on the current ability to function
Learn to manage emotions that feel uncomfortable
Reduce impulsiveness, help observe feelings instead of acting out
Improving relationship, becoming aware of feelings

Environmental Risk
Factors
-Poor or uninformed parenting is the most critical environmental factor

These include:
-Early separation from one or both parents

Also called psychodynamic psychotherapy
give better understanding of emotions and interpersonal difficulties
General psychiatric management
