Sapporo and WWII
During the last days of World War II, on July 14 and 15, 1945, 30 B-29 Superfortress bombers dropped 889 tons of 21 tons of incendiary cluster bombs and 226 kgs T4E4 fragmentation cluster bombs into Sapporo at lunchtime. In the resulting firestorm 190 civilians were killed, 6,788 were injured, 78,000 others remained homeless, and many structures burned for a total of 17.5 percent of the city destroyed as a part of Allied air raids on Hokkaido. The city however, was reconstructed after the war.
The festival is one of Japan's largest and most distinctive winter events. In 2007, about two million people visited Sapporo to see the hundreds of snow statues and ice sculptures
Every year the number of statues displayed is around 400 in total. In 2007, there were 307 statues created in the Odori Park site, 32 in the Satoland site and 100 in the Susukino site. The best place to get an overview of the creations is from the TV Tower at the Odori Park site.
