Today's Warm Up:
In your notebooks, try to identify the following three images. What did these images all have in common? All three images were viewed through some type of microscope Unit 4 A Tour of The Cell How do we know cells exist? Back in the 1600s people believed in a idea called Spontaneous Generation
an idea that living things arose from non-living things Spontaneous
Generation This all changed in 1665 with an English scientist Robert Hooke Using a microscope, Hooke observed cork cells Imagine you are Hooke,
what are some observations that you might have made? Hooke thought the cork looked like tiny rooms so he coined the term "Cell" This was the first MAJOR breakthrough in the discovery of the cell The next major discovery was made by Anton van Leeuwenhoek
(Lee Ven Hook) Leeuwenhoek built his own microscopes that helped him observe cells in greater detail He examined many living organisms underneath the lens of a microscope By the 1800s, scientists throughout Europe were studying cells In Germany, there were two scientists especially important Matthias Schleiden was a German botanist He studied many different plants Logically he concluded, All plants are made of cells Around the same time,
another German Scientist
Theodore Schwann was studying animal cells all animals are made of cells Together
Schleiden and Schwann helped to create
the first two ideas of All living things are made of cells However, the two did not agree on how cells formed In 1885, Rudolph Virchow helped settled their disagreement Based on the work of several earlier scientist,
Virchow concluded Cells are formed
by other living cells Cell Theory Cells are the basic unit of life In summary.... The Cell Theory says All living organisms are made of cells

All cells come from other living cells He concluded Virchow knew of prior research done by Italian scientist

in the 1600s Francesco Redi Redi's experiments helped to dispel the idea of spontaneous generation So based on the observations made by many scientist we know all living things are made of cells Scientists have classified cells into two main types Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes Prokaryotes Simple cells
Unicellular organisms such as bacteria
No membrane bound nucleus or other organelles He also helped form the third principle of cell theory But not all cells are the same There are many different kinds of cells
all with their own purpose Okay...but what are cells?? Cells The smallest functional unit in all living organisms
All cells are enclosed by a membrane to keep material in or outside the cell
Filled with Cytoplasm - a jellylike substance containing molecular building blocks Eukaryotes Includes unicellular and multicellular organisms
Have a membrane bound nucleus
Contain other organelles for various functions
Humans, animals, and plants are all examples of eukaryotes Prokaryote Eukaryote Humans, plants, animals
Have a membrane-bound nucleus
Have functional organelles Single celled organisms
No membrane-bound nucleus or organelles
