Hi, my name is Rachel Rehak and I'm here to talk to you about why we need PLC.
00:07 - 00:11
S and education a teacher's point of view on collaboration.
00:12 - 00:15
So what is the PLC and how does it help? Teachers?
00:15 - 00:18
A PLC is a professional learning community.
00:18 - 00:20
Professional learning communities are a group
00:20 - 00:22
of educators with a similar background
00:23 - 00:26
where teachers can systematically come together to discuss data,
00:26 - 00:28
Student growth and best practices.
00:31 - 00:35
PLC's offer consideration of feedback from colleagues and other professionals
00:36 - 00:38
when working with other professionals or colleagues.
00:38 - 00:41
It increases bonding and connectedness among teachers,
00:41 - 00:44
feedback in terms of data and best practices allows teachers
00:44 - 00:47
to learn from one another and build meaningful relationships.
00:47 - 00:52
This can also transform teacher practice, which can be a huge part of P. L. C. S.
00:54 - 00:56
Building a report with colleagues and community.
00:56 - 00:58
Clearly you need to have a good relationship with
00:58 - 01:01
the people that you're working with every single day.
01:01 - 01:01
PLC?
01:01 - 01:04
S increased professional relationships among teachers
01:04 - 01:06
and learning from one another helps
01:06 - 01:12
fuel trust and professional understanding among teachers and Teams PLC s provide
01:12 - 01:16
many opportunities for fruitful collaborations and conversations,
01:19 - 01:21
advocacy for our students.
01:21 - 01:25
PLC should probably discuss student data and allow teachers to
01:26 - 01:30
learn about how their students are learning.
01:30 - 01:34
Um students and teachers alike are able to grow and increase
01:35 - 01:39
um positive student outcomes and learning best practices also
01:39 - 01:42
gives students the opportunity to learn and grow.
01:45 - 01:45
Oh,
01:50 - 01:54
So PLC's improved practice among participating educators.
01:54 - 01:56
As discussed earlier,
01:56 - 02:00
teachers are able to discuss their own practice learn from others
02:00 - 02:01
and they're given opportunities for
02:01 - 02:04
meaningful conversation regarding best practice.
02:04 - 02:07
Student outcomes data and growth.
02:07 - 02:10
I think that this is one of the most meaningful things
02:10 - 02:15
that can come from PLC s because teachers are able to
02:15 - 02:18
learn from one another and it helps them to grow
02:18 - 02:21
as an educator and then they are able to maybe
02:22 - 02:25
learn new things and put them into practice in their own classroom,
02:25 - 02:28
therefore increasing student outcomes.
02:28 - 02:29
Um I just think that
02:30 - 02:36
being able to learn from each other is is incredibly important in education.
02:37 - 02:40
So a couple of important things for our students
02:40 - 02:43
that should likely be discussed during PLC S.
02:43 - 02:44
S. E. L.
02:44 - 02:47
Or social emotional learning is building schools,
02:47 - 02:51
building skills to develop healthy identities and SCL
02:51 - 02:55
classrooms really focus on the whole child,
02:55 - 02:57
not just the educational outcomes,
02:57 - 02:59
It's important that our students feel safe at school,
02:59 - 03:03
that they want to be there and that they are able to perform.
03:03 - 03:03
Therefore,
03:03 - 03:07
I think we need to take into consideration Maslow's hierarchy and make sure that our
03:07 - 03:10
students most basic needs are met before we
03:10 - 03:12
worry about some of the educational pieces.
03:12 - 03:15
So SCL is one of those things that I believe,
03:15 - 03:19
especially at the level that I'm preparing to teach for, which would be K to two.
03:19 - 03:21
We need to really make sure that our kids
03:21 - 03:26
um feel loved and connected to their classroom before we focus on
03:26 - 03:29
um educational outcomes.
03:29 - 03:31
So inclusion, inclusion is
03:32 - 03:36
getting students from all backgrounds, the same access access to the curriculum.
03:36 - 03:38
It may not look the same,
03:38 - 03:42
but students are able to access the curriculum in a way that works for them.
03:42 - 03:47
And the last thing I think that it is important to discuss, as at P. L. C. S.
03:47 - 03:53
Is cultural competence and that is a range of cognitive affective and
03:53 - 03:54
behavioral skills that lead to appropriate
03:54 - 03:57
communication with people of other cultures.
03:57 - 03:59
I think it's really important that our students are
03:59 - 04:02
able to communicate not only with one another,
04:02 - 04:06
but also with people outside of their classroom and outside of their school,
04:06 - 04:11
it is a skill that will work for them for the rest of their lives.
04:11 - 04:15
So I think it's really important that we talk about those things during PLC.
04:15 - 04:17
S to be able to inform practice
04:17 - 04:19
in our classrooms.
04:20 - 04:23
So my final thoughts PLC seemed like a
04:23 - 04:27
meaningful intent field opportunity for professional development.
04:27 - 04:30
They are an opportunity for collaboration,
04:30 - 04:32
meaningful discussion and data review.
04:32 - 04:35
And I believe that PLC s would be a better use of
04:35 - 04:38
professional development days versus paying for
04:38 - 04:40
speakers and other forms of professional development
04:41 - 04:42
overall.
04:42 - 04:45
I believe that PLC s could be a wonderful way for
04:45 - 04:49
educator is not only to come together but to build relationships,
04:49 - 04:53
collaborate and informed practice in their own classrooms,
04:53 - 04:57
which again I believe is highly important.
04:58 - 05:03
Here's a list of some of the resources that I used to put this together today,
05:03 - 05:07
I would like to thank you for your time and I hope that you have a wonderful day
