00:01 - 00:04
Hi. My name is Lydia Cookie Oaks, and I am
00:04 - 00:07
applying for the principal position with simple middle school.
00:09 - 00:11
First of all, thank you for this opportunity for the
00:11 - 00:14
interview. I appreciate you taking time out of your day
00:15 - 00:16
to interview me.
00:17 - 00:20
So why am I pursuing a leadership rule with your
00:20 - 00:26
school? I have been applying to many schools looking for
00:26 - 00:31
an opportunity as a new administrator, I've found that many
00:31 - 00:36
applicants have experienced, so it's been challenging to even secure
00:36 - 00:39
an interview with no experience going into a position like
00:40 - 00:44
this. I've researched this district, and I'm very impressed with
00:44 - 00:45
the leadership here.
00:46 - 00:48
I would love to learn here as a member of
00:48 - 00:48
that team.
00:54 - 00:57
What do I identify as potential challenges off leading?
01:00 - 01:02
There are always challenges that are going to you come
01:03 - 01:06
with being in a leadership position in any capacity.
01:07 - 01:11
Um, the biggest challenge that I anticipate is a lack
01:12 - 01:15
of trust from staff members coming in as an outsider.
01:16 - 01:18
It's going to take some time to build those relationships.
01:20 - 01:24
Uh, staff members could have differing opinions, not trust that
01:24 - 01:26
I know what I'm talking about or have any experience
01:27 - 01:30
because I don't have experience being a principal yet, but
01:31 - 01:32
the only way to learn is to do.
01:33 - 01:38
Um And then I can anticipate some push back from
01:38 - 01:40
staff members just because of those differing opinions.
01:41 - 01:42
But it will.
01:42 - 01:45
I will do my best to ease everyone's mind and
01:45 - 01:47
show that I am trustworthy and capable.
01:52 - 01:54
How would I build relationships with my new team?
01:55 - 01:56
What do I envision as potential challenges?
01:57 - 01:59
Thes two questions go pretty closely together.
02:01 - 02:03
Building relationships will just take time and consistency.
02:05 - 02:09
In my experience, transparency and communication are key components to
02:09 - 02:14
building solid relationships, being authentic, open, honest.
02:16 - 02:21
And if I act in those ways, then it will
02:21 - 02:23
only take some time for staff to realize that I
02:25 - 02:27
I mean what I say and I'm not just blowing
02:27 - 02:32
smoke. Um, I also think it's important for staff members
02:32 - 02:37
to feel heard when they present concerns to the leadership
02:39 - 02:40
instead of feeling brushed aside.
02:41 - 02:45
So if I validate opinions and feelings, I think that
02:45 - 02:48
that will help to build that sort of trust and
02:49 - 02:52
solid relationships between the leadership and the staff of the
02:52 - 02:57
first describe my leadership style.
02:59 - 03:02
I like to think of myself as very calm and
03:03 - 03:09
fair and collaborative I We'll ensure that everyone feels heard
03:09 - 03:10
and has a voice.
03:11 - 03:14
I think it's important to be a part of the
03:14 - 03:18
team and not be an administrator who is just often
03:18 - 03:19
an office somewhere.
03:20 - 03:23
I like to be very visible in the school and
03:23 - 03:26
also to check in frequently with staff members to see
03:26 - 03:27
how they're doing.
03:27 - 03:29
And if there's anything that I can do to help
03:29 - 03:36
in any way, how do I balance personal and professional
03:37 - 03:40
obligations? You know that leadership can be very demanding.
03:41 - 03:44
I do my best to keep work and personal life
03:44 - 03:47
separate. So when I'm at work, I try very hard
03:48 - 03:51
to be present in my principle leadership role.
03:52 - 03:55
And when I'm at home, I tried very hard to
03:55 - 03:59
be present in my mom wife person role.
04:00 - 04:04
Um, I think that those two aspects it's a It's
04:04 - 04:06
a delicate balancing act.
04:07 - 04:11
Both both components are very important and I like to
04:12 - 04:15
encourage the family first philosophy.
04:16 - 04:19
But that doesn't mean that I won't take work in
04:19 - 04:21
this position very seriously as well.
04:22 - 04:26
Um, in the case of a staff member having a
04:26 - 04:30
family emergency, I would encourage them to be present with
04:30 - 04:34
their family and take that time because I think that
04:34 - 04:34
that's important.
04:35 - 04:39
Um, work can wait in that kind of situation, but
04:39 - 04:42
family members can't always, depending on the scenario.
04:42 - 04:46
So I like to be very supportive and encouraging and
04:48 - 04:50
just help everyone to do their best.
04:55 - 05:00
What I see as the greatest professional strength and an
05:00 - 05:05
area for development, I can be very calm, even in
05:05 - 05:06
stressful situations.
05:08 - 05:08
We're trying scenarios.
05:10 - 05:14
I accept constructive feedback and implement that into my work
05:15 - 05:16
and take it as guidance.
05:16 - 05:18
I try not to take things personally because I know
05:19 - 05:20
that everyone can always improve.
05:22 - 05:27
Um, an area that I could improve or an area
05:27 - 05:30
for development, I think, would be along the lines of
05:31 - 05:34
learning more school laws and state laws to make sure
05:34 - 05:37
that the school and staff are in compliance with everything
05:38 - 05:38
that's expected of us.
05:39 - 05:41
That's something that I don't have a lot of experience
05:42 - 05:45
with, and it's something that I definitely could grow in.
05:54 - 05:57
So as a leader, if I identify an employee who
05:57 - 06:00
is struggling, what would I do to support the employees?
06:02 - 06:05
I think that it's important to approach the situation with
06:06 - 06:06
a simple conversation.
06:08 - 06:11
I could approach the employees during a prep time or
06:12 - 06:17
lunch or a quick chat before or after school and
06:17 - 06:19
just say, Hey, you know, I have noticed that you've
06:20 - 06:24
been having a hard time missing deadlines or you haven't
06:24 - 06:25
been as available recently.
06:26 - 06:28
Was there anything going on that I should know about?
06:29 - 06:30
Is there anything that I can do to help you?
06:31 - 06:33
Is there anything that you feel you need more support
06:34 - 06:39
in? Um, just approach it in a friendly and concerned
06:40 - 06:42
manner because we're all human.
06:43 - 06:44
We all have bad days.
06:44 - 06:46
We all have hard situations that we're dealing with.
06:47 - 06:50
And like I said, I try to keep working life
06:50 - 06:53
separate, and I don't think that I'm the only person
06:53 - 06:53
who does that.
06:54 - 06:57
So it's very possible that someone could have something hard
06:57 - 06:59
going on in their personal life that they haven't shared
07:00 - 07:00
in it.
07:00 - 07:01
That's what's affecting their work.
07:03 - 07:06
But if I don't have a conversation, there's no way
07:06 - 07:07
that I would know that information.
07:07 - 07:11
So I think it's important just to be curious and
07:11 - 07:14
caring and riel with the staff members.
07:21 - 07:23
Tell us about a time you've dealt with an angry
07:23 - 07:24
or challenging parent.
07:25 - 07:29
Well, I think that it's easy for parents to get
07:30 - 07:35
defensive or upset when it comes to conversations around their
07:35 - 07:38
Children. I mean, their Children are there babies.
07:39 - 07:41
We all have our babies and we don't want to
07:41 - 07:45
hear anything bad about them, especially when it comes to
07:45 - 07:47
things like discipline or misbehaviors at school.
07:48 - 07:53
Um, it's easy for everyone's guard to go up when
07:53 - 07:56
they hear the principal or vice principal, or the dean
07:56 - 07:58
of students on the phone making a phone call to
07:58 - 08:01
them. So in my previous position is the dean of
08:01 - 08:04
students in my district, and I frequently had to make
08:05 - 08:05
phone calls regarding misbehaviors.
08:08 - 08:11
And the most important thing is to really share what
08:11 - 08:11
has happened.
08:12 - 08:15
What you have noticed, what investigation you have done.
08:16 - 08:19
Just be very forthcoming with the information you have and
08:19 - 08:24
how you have handled the situation and then ask how
08:25 - 08:26
the parents are feeling about that.
08:26 - 08:29
Is there anything that you think I should know when
08:29 - 08:30
I am going through this situation?
08:32 - 08:34
Did something happen before school today?
08:34 - 08:38
Did your child get enough sleep last night and really
08:38 - 08:39
listen to their answers?
08:40 - 08:43
I think that a a big part of getting angry
08:44 - 08:48
in situations like this is people not feeling heard or
08:48 - 08:49
validated or understood.
08:50 - 08:52
So it's one of my goals to always make sure
08:53 - 08:59
that people feel valued and heard in their situation in
08:59 - 08:59
their stance.
09:00 - 09:02
And I think that that makes it a lot easier
09:03 - 09:07
to move forward together and come to a solution or
09:09 - 09:13
a consequence for a child, or just really collaborate and
09:13 - 09:16
work together and also helped to calm the parent down
09:17 - 09:20
when they know that we really truly have their child's
09:20 - 09:23
best interests at heart, we're not coming from an attacking
09:24 - 09:26
point were coming from a supportive point.
09:28 - 09:33
Um, I had one scenario where 2/5 grade girls were
09:34 - 09:37
cyberbullying each other one more so than the other.
09:38 - 09:40
Um, so the one who was doing more bullying.
09:41 - 09:44
I called her grandma and had a conversation with it
09:45 - 09:48
with her about the situation, and she was very defensive
09:48 - 09:49
very much.
09:50 - 09:53
My granddaughter would never do that, even though I had
09:55 - 09:58
evidence printed out from the other parent.
09:59 - 10:03
So that was probably the most challenging conversation just sharing
10:03 - 10:06
that, you know, I have this in writing from your
10:06 - 10:09
granddaughter, and the other girl was not fully innocent, and
10:10 - 10:12
we need to work together to make sure that they
10:12 - 10:15
both know this is an okay way to act or
10:16 - 10:17
behave towards one another or anyone.
10:18 - 10:22
Um, and towards the end of the conversation, Graham and
10:22 - 10:23
I were more on the same page and we were
10:23 - 10:25
able to move forward in a positive way.
10:30 - 10:32
If two employees were not getting along, how would you
10:32 - 10:32
handle this situation?
10:36 - 10:40
I think that the best way to handle this type
10:40 - 10:44
of situation, at least initially would be to act as
10:44 - 10:46
a mediator for the two staff members.
10:48 - 10:51
A lot of times people who are not getting along
10:52 - 10:55
or people who are not understanding each other or hearing
10:56 - 10:59
with other one is saying and then tension just continues
10:59 - 11:00
to build.
11:01 - 11:05
So I would act as a mediator and helped to
11:07 - 11:11
come to some sort of agreement or understanding between one
11:11 - 11:16
another. I think that my role would really be to
11:18 - 11:21
allow each staff member to share their perspective and how
11:21 - 11:24
they're feeling and make sure that the other staff members
11:24 - 11:28
listening and vice versa and hopefully they would be able
11:29 - 11:32
to communicate effectively and come to some sort of resolution.
11:37 - 11:42
What does collaboration mean to me working together to reach
11:42 - 11:43
a common cool.
11:44 - 11:47
I truly believe that if we all collaborate and work
11:48 - 11:53
together for our students and for our families, that's the
11:53 - 11:54
most important thing that we can dio.
11:55 - 11:59
Um, because when we're divided, we fall.
11:59 - 12:02
But when we stand together, we're stronger.
12:03 - 12:07
And I think it's really important to communicate and collaborate
12:08 - 12:10
and work together to be the best versions of ourselves
12:11 - 12:14
that we can be be the best school that we
12:14 - 12:19
can be and also be supportive for our students and
12:19 - 12:19
their families.
12:26 - 12:28
What ideas do you have to enhance or change our
12:28 - 12:29
current virtual program?
12:30 - 12:33
I am not familiar with your current virtual program, but
12:33 - 12:36
I do know that technology is constantly changing.
12:37 - 12:39
So one thing that I would like to implement is
12:40 - 12:44
just on ongoing technological professional development.
12:46 - 12:48
This could be something that would be like a quarterly
12:49 - 12:51
training. We could hire someone to come in and do
12:51 - 12:55
a training just to keep us up to date, and
12:55 - 12:58
that would help the school to stay on top of
12:58 - 13:02
their game and really know how to effectively implement technology
13:03 - 13:09
in the classroom as a leader.
13:09 - 13:13
How would I impact student achievement I think this all
13:13 - 13:14
comes back to building relationships.
13:16 - 13:19
It's important for students to have relationships with their school
13:19 - 13:23
administrators. Obviously, they have strong relationships with their teachers because
13:24 - 13:25
they spend their time in the classroom with their teachers
13:26 - 13:27
all day, every day.
13:28 - 13:32
But as an administrator, that relationship isn't a strong because
13:33 - 13:37
there's not as much time spent together getting to know
13:37 - 13:40
each other and learn each other's strengths and differences.
13:42 - 13:44
Um, I don't want to make sure that all students
13:45 - 13:46
know that I know who they are.
13:47 - 13:48
I'll learn everyone's names.
13:49 - 13:53
I want them also feel valued and appreciated, and I
13:53 - 13:55
will do my best to celebrate all of their wins
13:56 - 13:57
and achievements with them.
14:02 - 14:06
What would my current colleagues say about me?
14:07 - 14:10
I've been described a stoic comb.
14:11 - 14:12
Fair, hardworking.
14:13 - 14:15
I think all of those air good adjectives for me
14:15 - 14:19
that I've heard from colleagues and my most recent manager,
14:20 - 14:24
eager to learn open toe opportunities, always willing to help,
14:25 - 14:31
um, takes feedback and puts it into play Bills are
14:31 - 14:35
probably the best I am running out of time here,
14:35 - 14:38
but I just want to say thank you again for
14:38 - 14:38
this opportunity.
14:39 - 14:40
I appreciate you taking time out of your day.
14:41 - 14:44
And I look forward to hearing more from you and
14:45 - 14:46
working together in the future.
14:46 - 14:47
Thank you.
14:47 - 14:47
Have a great afternoon.
