00:01 - 00:04
I'm going to show you my study design and rationale.
00:09 - 00:14
So a little bit of background to the study. Um the P. I, which is me um
00:14 - 00:18
Has been conducting this art program with students
00:18 - 00:22
with disabilities at the study site since 2019.
00:22 - 00:25
My background in special education and the arts
00:25 - 00:28
are my impetus for conducting this study.
00:28 - 00:33
It was this work that inspired me to pursue this to pursue this degree program.
00:36 - 00:38
I feel there is incredible potential for the arts to
00:38 - 00:40
help my students reach therapy goals that ultimately promote,
00:40 - 00:42
promote their well being.
00:42 - 00:46
I also hope to contribute to the existing literature related to arts and
00:46 - 00:51
health for this population and specifically in areas with a rural designation.
00:54 - 00:59
This project is an instrumental case study focusing on a specific population,
00:59 - 01:02
Children with disabilities and a specific site for White High School.
01:02 - 01:05
I'm not investigating a standalone phenomenon.
01:05 - 01:05
Rather,
01:05 - 01:08
I aim to collect data and research to address
01:08 - 01:11
access to arts and health for Children with disabilities in
01:11 - 01:13
rural areas and the role that an arts and
01:13 - 01:15
health program could have in a public school system.
01:19 - 01:23
This site is Fort White High School. Located in Fort White florida.
01:23 - 01:28
It is a rural public school in a very low low income area.
01:28 - 01:34
It serves grades six through 12 and the study focuses specifically on students with
01:34 - 01:38
disabilities placed in self contained special education
01:38 - 01:39
classrooms at Fort White High School,
01:39 - 01:42
which means that they're not part of the mainstream general
01:42 - 01:43
student population.
01:44 - 01:47
Forward High school previously offered no formal art
01:47 - 01:50
education opportunities for this population of students.
01:50 - 01:54
So they really didn't have many options outside of P. E.
01:54 - 01:58
Until I started this program.
02:01 - 02:02
So
02:03 - 02:05
I wanted to include both students and staff in the
02:05 - 02:07
study in order to collect data from multiple angles,
02:07 - 02:11
students and staff both complete a pre imposed survey.
02:11 - 02:16
But students will also be observed during our sessions which required me
02:16 - 02:19
to provide different types of consent and assent for each group.
02:20 - 02:23
Students subjects were recruited based on these factors.
02:23 - 02:26
They had to be a current student enrolled at Fort White High School.
02:26 - 02:28
Current placement was in a self contained classroom.
02:28 - 02:32
They had to be between the ages of 11 and 17, English speaking.
02:32 - 02:35
Um that's for the student and parents or guardians.
02:36 - 02:37
They had to receive services from
02:38 - 02:39
occupational therapy.
02:40 - 02:43
They had to have OT goals related to areas of independence,
02:43 - 02:45
self determination and or choice making.
02:46 - 02:48
Some potential subjects were chosen
02:49 - 02:51
who had been receiving OT services at Fort White
02:51 - 02:53
High School for at least two consecutive years.
02:53 - 02:56
This didn't have to this wasn't a qualifying factor for
02:56 - 03:01
all students but I did make sure to include some
03:01 - 03:02
that
03:02 - 03:04
had that extra
03:05 - 03:08
time with OT because I use that as control information.
03:09 - 03:12
The total amount of number of subjects recruited.
03:12 - 03:14
I was 11
03:18 - 03:22
Recruitment packets contained a letter from me to parents and guardians.
03:22 - 03:24
The consent forms in a self addressed stamped
03:24 - 03:26
envelope to ensure return of the forms.
03:26 - 03:31
15 packets were sent home and of those 15 I was able to recruit 11 students subjects,
03:31 - 03:36
three girls and eight boys and with a diverse range of abilities.
03:38 - 03:42
Staff subjects are all female except for one male administrator.
03:42 - 03:45
13 out of 15 staff that I invited to
03:45 - 03:48
invited to the study agreed to participate.
03:48 - 03:49
They're all female,
03:49 - 03:53
save for the one male administrator and they're all between the ages of 18 and 65.
03:54 - 03:56
They were recruited based on these factors.
03:56 - 03:59
They had to be currently employed by the Columbia County School District.
03:59 - 04:02
They had to have current placement at Fort White High School.
04:02 - 04:04
They had to be 18 years of age or older and
04:04 - 04:08
the role of the school involves teaching or supporting student subjects.
04:14 - 04:18
Students subjects were given consent forms or their
04:18 - 04:21
parents and guardians were giving consent forms.
04:22 - 04:24
The consent was obtained for participation in the
04:24 - 04:27
study and for photography opting out of the study
04:27 - 04:30
did not affect versus participation in the regular
04:30 - 04:32
weekly art sessions and opting out of tata.
04:33 - 04:35
It was not a disqualifying factor for participating
04:35 - 04:38
in the study assent was obtained from students determined
04:38 - 04:40
by their parents or guardians to be capable of
04:40 - 04:43
understanding the study and their role in it.
04:43 - 04:45
Staff subjects were given a recruitment letter
04:45 - 04:48
and a documentation of waiver of informed consent
04:48 - 04:51
recruitment letter was returned to me
04:51 - 04:54
indicating interest and their preferred survey format
04:54 - 05:00
because I did give them a choice to have a google form survey or
05:00 - 05:02
a printed copy.
05:03 - 05:07
Staff were also given a consent for photography with the ability to opt out
05:13 - 05:16
Alright. And then finally the study activities. Uh
05:17 - 05:22
First off are the surveys both students and staff subjects will be were given
05:23 - 05:26
uh pre surveys and they will be given post surveys.
05:26 - 05:31
All staff subjects who consent to participate will complete those surveys.
05:31 - 05:36
But for the students subjects um all student subjects who are able
05:36 - 05:39
to respond will be given the opportunity to complete a survey.
05:39 - 05:43
Uh The reason that I say that they will be given an opportunity to
05:43 - 05:45
complete the survey is because some students
05:45 - 05:49
subjects were not able to really understand
05:49 - 05:53
what was being asked of them and some were not able to respond.
05:53 - 05:55
And the version of the survey that they receive
05:56 - 05:59
will be based off of their communication needs.
05:59 - 06:01
I'll show you in a moment that there
06:01 - 06:03
are two different versions of the student survey.
06:04 - 06:09
Student responses were recorded or will be recorded by me.
06:09 - 06:13
Uh And there will be six weeks of student participation in visual
06:13 - 06:17
art activities that are designed to support their occupational therapy goals.
06:18 - 06:22
Initially the study was supposed to be eight weeks of data collection
06:22 - 06:24
but it did have to be shortened due to the I.
06:24 - 06:25
R. B. Process
06:26 - 06:28
and during those activities,
06:28 - 06:32
I will be recording observations during and after each
06:32 - 06:35
session a little bit more on those art activities.
06:35 - 06:38
Um Coming back again to that process based approach.
06:38 - 06:43
All the art activities were designed to support these goals of independence,
06:43 - 06:45
choice making and self determination.
06:45 - 06:50
Um Students are given a variety of materials tools and processes to
06:50 - 06:57
create art with I model different processes and different ways to make art
06:58 - 07:03
and I pretty much give them free reign on on what the subject matter is.
07:03 - 07:04
Of their their art
07:05 - 07:09
adaptations are made on an individual level with input from the OT to ensure safety.
07:10 - 07:13
They are encouraged to explore interests and experiment with ideas.
07:13 - 07:17
And teachers and paraprofessionals are asked to fade,
07:18 - 07:22
which means just take a step back and not do things for
07:22 - 07:27
students allowing students to genuinely engage in their own creative processes.
07:27 - 07:31
Here's some examples of some art activities that we've done so far
07:31 - 07:32
for the study.
07:32 - 07:36
Um This was I like to call it painting with tissue paper.
07:36 - 07:37
Um
07:37 - 07:43
And we also made puzzles. A lot of students have goals that involve uh
07:44 - 07:47
building puzzles within a certain amount of time,
07:47 - 07:49
with a certain amount of accuracy.
07:49 - 07:52
So I thought it would be fun for them to make their own puzzles.
07:53 - 07:55
And they did. They had a lot of fun.
07:55 - 08:00
You can see this student made, I think she made four separate puzzles.
08:00 - 08:02
She really had a lot of fun.
08:06 - 08:07
All right,
08:09 - 08:10
so
08:10 - 08:13
now I'm going to talk a little bit about my methodology.
08:13 - 08:18
Um So this is a mixed methods, data collection analysis.
08:19 - 08:22
I decided to do mixed methods because I wanted to gain
08:22 - 08:26
insight into multiple aspects of the project from different perspectives.
08:26 - 08:29
I also wanted to try to achieve triangulation.
08:29 - 08:33
Um and did so by having three distinct sources of data
08:33 - 08:37
that give me a more comprehensive results to my study.
08:38 - 08:39
Alright,
08:39 - 08:44
so I do have quantitative data that's being collected through my observation logs.
08:44 - 08:45
I have
08:46 - 08:51
sort of numerical codes that are assigned to describe specific behaviors that
08:51 - 08:56
or like indicators of progress towards ot goals that are recorded um
08:56 - 08:58
during and after each session.
08:58 - 09:02
And then I also have quality quantitative data coming from skilled
09:02 - 09:06
responses on both the student and staff pre imposed surveys.
09:06 - 09:12
Um So I want to show you kind of what that looks like. So here's the student survey.
09:12 - 09:17
Um you can see here that I have skilled responses to the questions that I asked.
09:17 - 09:19
The students are all based on
09:20 - 09:26
um areas of independence and self determination and choice making.
09:26 - 09:32
Um So this survey with the numbers, skilled responses was given to students who have
09:32 - 09:34
who are able to
09:34 - 09:40
communicate and respond to me. And then this one using a balance scale
09:40 - 09:45
is based off of feelings and it's given to students
09:45 - 09:50
who have more communication needs such as students with nonverbal um
09:50 - 09:51
autism.
09:52 - 09:56
I just wanted to sort of see how they would respond to that and
09:56 - 10:00
give them a way to express to me how these things make them feel
10:03 - 10:07
alright. The staff surveys had skilled responses as well.
10:08 - 10:11
Um These are all asking about
10:12 - 10:17
their perceptions of art and the role of art for Children with disabilities.
10:18 - 10:19
Um
10:19 - 10:24
I did generate all of the questions on these surveys myself, I did not use uh
10:25 - 10:26
and you sort of
10:27 - 10:28
pre made
10:29 - 10:33
pre made scale or inventory.
10:33 - 10:37
I did review several and none of them really met the
10:37 - 10:39
needs for the specific population that I was working with.
10:40 - 10:44
Um and all responses to the staff survey are completely anonymous.
10:47 - 10:50
Uh Staff subjects were actually given the opportunity
10:50 - 10:52
to complete their survey on google forms or to
10:52 - 10:56
get a printed version of it um to fill out that was completely up to them.
10:56 - 10:59
And the google forms was emailed to their staff email.
10:59 - 11:03
It's based on similar logs that are used by the occupational therapists.
11:03 - 11:07
And it actually collects both qualitative and quantitative data.
11:07 - 11:09
So these are the
11:10 - 11:14
numerical codes and so each area.
11:14 - 11:17
Each domain here sort of has its own
11:18 - 11:21
behaviors or indicators of progress that
11:21 - 11:23
I can expect to see
11:23 - 11:25
and then I circle
11:27 - 11:32
uh whatever applies for that session and I also described the activities that we
11:32 - 11:36
engaged in and I take notes on anything else that I might want to add
11:37 - 11:39
that I noticed from the session.
11:42 - 11:43
Alright,
11:43 - 11:47
so qualitative data is coming from the open response questions that are in the
11:47 - 11:53
students staff pre imposed surveys and from my notes from the observation logs and
11:53 - 11:58
uh notes and observations that are also from that I might derive from the oT data,
11:58 - 12:01
both current and past data.
12:01 - 12:04
Alright, so this is the student open response.
12:04 - 12:10
This was only given to students who are able to respond.
12:10 - 12:13
Students with communication needs did not get the
12:14 - 12:16
free response. They only had a skilled response.
12:18 - 12:22
And then staff free responses to these questions are basically aimed at collecting
12:22 - 12:26
their perspectives on the role and impact of art for Children with disabilities.
12:26 - 12:29
Um Actually asked them to specific questions and then I
12:29 - 12:31
asked them to go back to their skilled responses,
12:31 - 12:34
choose a statement that they disagreed with and one that they
12:34 - 12:37
agreed with and then explain their reasoning for both of them.
12:45 - 12:46
Mm hmm.
12:47 - 12:51
So from the qualitative data the way that I'm going to analyze it,
12:51 - 12:53
I will be coding the data for themes and
12:53 - 12:57
trying to measure progress from the qualitative data.
12:57 - 12:59
So all qualitative data from survey responses
12:59 - 13:02
will be coded and analyzed for themes.
13:02 - 13:03
Um
13:03 - 13:04
The
13:04 - 13:05
qualitative
13:06 - 13:07
data
13:09 - 13:12
analyzing software that I'm going to be using is
13:12 - 13:14
google forms which come
13:14 - 13:16
sort of generates its own
13:17 - 13:18
ah analytics.
13:18 - 13:22
And I'll also be using Excel to complete the coding.
13:22 - 13:28
And I'm considering using a program such as max Q. D. A. But I have to look into
13:28 - 13:33
whether or not I need to change my protocol in order
13:33 - 13:35
to use it and if I need to approach the I.
13:35 - 13:39
R. B. About it. I actually did not find out about max Q. D. A.
13:39 - 13:42
Um and other programs until recently
13:43 - 13:49
uh through the coding class that I am taking concurrently with my capstone.
13:49 - 13:53
Um I will be using grounded theory methods for inductive data analysis
13:54 - 13:59
and quantitative data from skilled responses will be analyzed for patterns
13:59 - 14:02
and any statistical data that I can derive from that.
14:02 - 14:05
Um data from observation logs will be analyzed
14:05 - 14:09
and compared to current occupational occupational therapy data.
14:09 - 14:13
Then that comparison is going to be compared
14:13 - 14:16
to past occupational therapy data that's going to serve
14:16 - 14:20
as control and that past occupational therapy uh information
14:20 - 14:23
is going to be for the same students that
14:24 - 14:25
I'm collecting current
14:25 - 14:27
data on for my for my survey,
14:28 - 14:29
which is why it acts as a control.
14:35 - 14:38
Alright, so my study aims are to support independence,
14:38 - 14:43
self determination and choice making through engagement with visual art
14:43 - 14:46
to formally investigate the goals and objectives shared
14:46 - 14:49
and supported by occupational therapy and arts and health
14:49 - 14:50
document and
