00:01 - 00:03
Hello. My name is Talia Egan and I was this
00:03 - 00:07
summer's environmental education in turn here at Sir, I was
00:08 - 00:11
kept busy leading and facilitating virtual and in person programs
00:11 - 00:13
for school groups and incoming volunteers.
00:15 - 00:17
I was able to be involved in some of the
00:17 - 00:20
field and lab research happening in and around Cirque for
00:20 - 00:23
my project though I moved back to the virtual space
00:23 - 00:26
to work with Smithsonian learning lab and figuring out how
00:26 - 00:29
we can best work within their framework to promote all
00:29 - 00:33
of the work happening here Here at the Education Department.
00:33 - 00:37
We usually bring in 5000 people per year for interactive
00:38 - 00:40
field trips where we teach the public all about the
00:40 - 00:43
environment and the research that goes on on our campus.
00:44 - 00:45
That is not happening now.
00:47 - 00:51
The COVID-19 pandemic halted programming for awhile and now has
00:51 - 00:54
seriously limited any in person programming that we have.
00:55 - 00:58
Even with virtual programming, we are getting a fraction of
00:58 - 00:59
that 5000 number.
01:01 - 01:03
Learning lab can help us bridge that gap moving forward.
01:04 - 01:07
So what is learning lab and how can it do
01:07 - 01:11
that? Learning Lab is a digital curation website created by
01:11 - 01:11
the Smithsonian.
01:12 - 01:16
So users can share, edit and use online Smithsonian content.
01:17 - 01:19
All sorts of content can be shared on learning lab
01:20 - 01:25
like pictures of artifacts, full lesson plans, guided activities and
01:25 - 01:30
video series, cirque education and outreach have been interested in
01:30 - 01:33
adopting learning lab to continue reaching the public to enhance
01:34 - 01:37
in person programs and to start creating a digital history
01:37 - 01:39
of the work happening here at Sir.
01:41 - 01:43
Now Learning Lab sounds great but there are some challenges
01:44 - 01:47
we have to work through because the website is still
01:47 - 01:49
in its early days and they are still making modifications.
01:51 - 01:54
Currently it's format works a little bit better for Smithsonian
01:54 - 01:58
groups that have physical objects and artifacts and it works
01:58 - 02:00
better for that than it does for groups like us
02:00 - 02:05
with lots of data and educational materials, It is not
02:05 - 02:06
very user friendly right now.
02:07 - 02:09
It's not super intuitive and it can be a little
02:09 - 02:12
difficult to navigate when you're on for the first time,
02:14 - 02:16
but it is the tool that we have to use
02:16 - 02:18
and as long as we can account for those challenges,
02:19 - 02:21
it is a tool that might really benefit our outreach
02:21 - 02:26
efforts, especially now to figure out how we can best
02:26 - 02:27
use. Learning lab.
02:27 - 02:31
I researched design and organizational best practices for our online
02:31 - 02:35
content. I then created a write up for the education
02:35 - 02:39
department that explains how to navigate learning lab organizational strategies
02:40 - 02:42
to create and edit content on our learning lab page
02:43 - 02:46
and recommendations for content creation so that the next person
02:47 - 02:49
who works on learning lab for sir can be set
02:50 - 02:52
up for success and can start creating content and populating
02:53 - 02:53
our page.
