00:01 - 00:04
Hello and welcome to my video about my thesis
00:04 - 00:08
titled an alkaline diet and the potential of plant medicine
00:08 - 00:11
in the treatment of diabetes mellitus.
00:12 - 00:15
I'm your host Ron bloom and I will be taking you through my work
00:15 - 00:19
and I like the societal and scientific
00:19 - 00:23
importance as well as mentioned ethical considerations.
00:23 - 00:27
But let's begin first with some background information,
00:28 - 00:33
diabetes mellitus or diabetes refers to a group of metabolic diseases
00:33 - 00:37
that are caused by a deficiency in insulin production,
00:37 - 00:39
insulin resistance or both.
00:39 - 00:43
And it is characterized by high blood glucose levels.
00:44 - 00:48
There are two main types of diabetes type one and type two
00:48 - 00:50
with type two being the most common,
00:51 - 00:55
Which is seen in 90 to 95% of all diabetic patients.
00:58 - 01:01
Looking at statistics of diabetes as a whole worldwide.
01:02 - 01:02
Mhm.
01:03 - 01:03
Mhm.
01:04 - 01:06
We can see that in 2010,
01:06 - 01:09
just under 300 million people.
01:09 - 01:15
We're living with diabetes and this number had almost doubled in 2021
01:15 - 01:18
Being just under 550 million.
01:19 - 01:21
This number is projected to continue to rise.
01:22 - 01:23
two,
01:23 - 01:25
million by 2030.
01:26 - 01:31
These data highlight the the importance and the need for health interventions
01:31 - 01:32
in order to counter
01:33 - 01:35
the current trajectory of this disease.
01:37 - 01:41
So, I mentioned insulin and glucose. But let's further look into what they are.
01:43 - 01:48
So insulin is a hormone that is produced by the pancreas,
01:48 - 01:52
it is produced by the beta cells of the pancreas to be exact.
01:53 - 01:55
However, in diabetes,
01:55 - 01:58
the pancreatic beta cells are partially or fully
01:58 - 02:02
destroyed in which insulin production is affected.
02:05 - 02:08
This diminished insulin action
02:08 - 02:12
means that blood means that the blood glucose levels remain high
02:13 - 02:15
because insulin is unable
02:15 - 02:21
to help the absorption of glucose from the blood into the liver fat and muscle cells.
02:22 - 02:26
So the action of insulin is basically to promote the absorption
02:26 - 02:30
of glucose out of the bloodstream and into target cells.
02:31 - 02:35
In diabetes, blood glucose levels are high,
02:35 - 02:38
which is known as hyperglycemia.
02:41 - 02:45
In both types. Due to the resistance or deficiency of insulin,
02:45 - 02:49
glucose accumulates in the blood which leads to hyperglycemia
02:50 - 02:55
and this long term hyperglycemia, if it is left untreated or poorly managed,
02:55 - 03:01
can lead to the failure of various organs, including the nerves, kidneys and heart.
03:05 - 03:09
So how does diet and plant medicine come into this?
03:10 - 03:13
Well, looking at the diet of
03:13 - 03:14
pre agricultural
03:15 - 03:17
people and the people today,
03:18 - 03:19
our diet is
03:19 - 03:23
deficient in magnesium, potassium and fiber,
03:24 - 03:28
but it is very high in simple carbohydrates, saturated fats and salts.
03:29 - 03:31
An alkaline diet simply means
03:31 - 03:34
a diet that is high in fruits and vegetables
03:35 - 03:38
and consumes little to no meat and dairy products.
03:39 - 03:39
Yeah,
03:40 - 03:46
this change in diet can be linked to the increasing rise in diabetic cases as
03:47 - 03:51
the cure for diabetes may well be found in consuming certain foods.
03:54 - 03:58
Oxidative stress is important to mention because this is when,
03:59 - 03:59
okay,
04:00 - 04:02
there are more harmful
04:03 - 04:08
then beneficial compounds in the body and this imbalance causes cellular damage.
04:08 - 04:09
However,
04:09 - 04:12
plants have many healing properties because
04:12 - 04:14
they are packed with antioxidants and nutrients
04:15 - 04:17
to counter this oxidative stress.
04:17 - 04:21
Antioxidants are molecules that counter oxidative stress.
04:21 - 04:25
By neutralizing the harmful molecules and these can be found
04:26 - 04:30
naturally occurring in the body or can be consumed through foods.
04:34 - 04:36
Now, what did my study actually do?
04:36 - 04:42
So I performed a meta analysis in which 11 studies were analyzed
04:42 - 04:48
looking at the effects of various herbal treatments on diabetic induced rats.
04:48 - 04:52
So all 11 studies were rat experiments in which
04:53 - 04:57
the researchers induced diabetes by injecting them with antibiotics
04:58 - 05:03
and destroying the functioning of the pancreas so that the insulin
05:04 - 05:07
levels or insulin production was altered
05:08 - 05:09
in order to mimic diabetes
05:10 - 05:13
of course, as with any study that involves animal models,
05:14 - 05:15
it is important to
05:15 - 05:18
mention the ethical considerations
05:19 - 05:20
but are linked with this.
05:21 - 05:25
So each of the studies that were included in the meta analysis had to first be
05:25 - 05:29
approved or they were approved by the institutional
05:29 - 05:32
animal ethics Committee or a similar organization.
05:32 - 05:34
Before the research could be conducted,
05:35 - 05:38
it is stated that all animals were handled as per the
05:38 - 05:43
international principle of the use and handling of experimental animals.
05:44 - 05:46
In each of the studies,
05:46 - 05:51
rats were euthanized at the end in order to dissect the liver,
05:51 - 05:54
kidney and pancreas to measure certain parameters and
05:54 - 05:57
see how these herbal treatments were able to,
05:58 - 05:59
we're able to
06:00 - 06:02
um affect them.
06:07 - 06:08
So
06:08 - 06:10
the scientific importance of this work is
06:10 - 06:13
that through looking at the studies that were
06:13 - 06:16
already done on herbal treatments,
06:16 - 06:19
I was able to see which of these herbal treatments
06:19 - 06:23
was the most effective and exerting anti diabetic effects.
06:23 - 06:28
This is important because the search for novel natural remedies is needed.
06:28 - 06:31
Since current diabetic medication has many side effects,
06:33 - 06:37
the societal importance is linked to this because
06:37 - 06:41
the main diabetic drug or medicine being insulin
06:42 - 06:47
is very expensive. And a simple google search shows that prices are even rising,
06:48 - 06:52
so from an economic standpoint, it is useful if there are
06:53 - 06:57
a cure is found in nature so that the economic burden is reduced.
06:58 - 06:59
Thanks.
06:59 - 07:04
Each of the herbs mentioned in the meta analysis were shown to have
07:04 - 07:08
anti diabetic effects by reducing or
07:08 - 07:11
adjusting parameters to their normal standard.
