00:00 - 00:06
Okay, now let's get started in the living section 10
00:06 - 00:07
12 Clay Street.
00:08 - 00:14
Modest in structure, but filled with lots of people and
00:14 - 00:15
plenty of love.
00:18 - 00:20
This is the only photograph that I have of my
00:20 - 00:25
father. Oh, how I wish how I wish I knew
00:26 - 00:30
more about this man, Cookie.
00:31 - 00:34
She was always the most beautiful woman I had ever
00:34 - 00:40
seen. Alison and I had opportunities to bond through our
00:40 - 00:45
community. Through our church and through school.
00:47 - 00:49
I could not wait to graduate high school.
00:50 - 00:53
So imagine my surprise went through the middle of the
00:53 - 00:54
high school graduation ceremony.
00:55 - 00:57
I start getting emotional and tearing up.
00:58 - 01:00
I guess I knew that I was on the horizon
01:01 - 01:04
of something altogether different than what I always knew.
01:07 - 01:10
My year in Texas is something that I will never
01:11 - 01:17
forget. While I was struggling with my life experience in
01:17 - 01:22
Texas, Alison was thriving with her first year of college,
01:25 - 01:28
reflecting over my life experience on Lee.
01:28 - 01:33
Help me to understand myself better, so I challenge you
01:33 - 01:34
to do the same.
01:35 - 01:38
Take a look at these reflection questions and give it
01:38 - 01:40
some thought, and then write your own reflections.
01:41 - 01:47
You can't get it wrong My first college experience was
01:47 - 01:53
very pivotal and positioning me into an educational environment.
01:55 - 01:58
But I never would have had that experience without the
01:58 - 02:00
encouragement of my good friend Alison.
02:03 - 02:06
I had a whole lot of fun on my way
02:06 - 02:08
to learning to be a college student.
02:10 - 02:14
Reflection is simply a dialogue between you and you.
02:15 - 02:16
You cannot get this wrong.
02:17 - 02:19
Just start where you are and keep going.
02:22 - 02:25
When I decided to go back to college, I was
02:25 - 02:25
an adult.
02:27 - 02:29
I was married and I had already had my first
02:30 - 02:34
child. So although I wanted to go back, I talked
02:34 - 02:35
myself out of it.
02:35 - 02:39
Initially, I doubted my ability to press on and to
02:39 - 02:44
push through, not fully realizing that all of the life
02:44 - 02:49
experience that I had lived would Onley add value now
02:49 - 02:52
that I was going back to the classroom.
02:55 - 02:58
1998 was the year that I married and moved away
02:59 - 03:03
from Kentucky, so this was another big year of transition.
03:04 - 03:07
And so that top picture is of me and Mama
03:08 - 03:10
at my going away dinner.
03:11 - 03:17
Before I moved to Hawaii, 1999 through 2000, I was
03:17 - 03:21
in Hawaii, and that's a picture of me standing, um,
03:21 - 03:23
on the beach of Waikiki.
03:24 - 03:28
And then in 2000, it was time to relocate toe
03:28 - 03:29
Washington, D.
03:29 - 03:32
C. And that is me with my beloved dog, C
03:32 - 03:35
J and C J Stand for Cleopatra Jones.
03:37 - 03:39
And then in 2003, I will become a mother for
03:40 - 03:40
the first time.
03:41 - 03:43
And that's me with my infant daughter.
03:45 - 03:48
I ran my first half marathon in 2000 and 14,
03:49 - 03:52
and I took my camera with me cause I wanted
03:52 - 03:56
to take pictures on the experience because I thought that
03:56 - 03:57
that was gonna be it.
03:57 - 03:58
I was never going to do it again.
03:58 - 04:00
And so I wanted to capture it.
04:01 - 04:03
A ZX evidence that I completed a half marathon.
04:04 - 04:09
Well, this video is from 2016, because once I completed
04:10 - 04:13
the first half marathon, it felt so good and I
04:13 - 04:16
felt so accomplished that I signed up to do it
04:16 - 04:18
again and again and again.
04:19 - 04:25
And so this is part of that journey in the
04:25 - 04:29
2000 and 16 half marathon race.
04:30 - 04:35
It rained the entire time, but the race had to
04:35 - 04:36
go on.
04:36 - 04:40
And so, about Midway there was a local news crew
04:41 - 04:42
that was set up to talk to runners.
04:43 - 04:45
And so I took advantage of that.
04:46 - 04:50
And so this is me talking to one of the
04:51 - 04:59
newscasters. Meanwhile, in 2019, I decided, uh, that I would
04:59 - 05:00
end my running journeys.
05:01 - 05:05
A zit pertains to the half marathons because, quite honestly,
05:06 - 05:12
it started to cause mawr pain injury to my body.
05:12 - 05:18
And so this is the final marathon half marathon that
05:18 - 05:19
I completed in 2019.
05:21 - 05:24
But I'm still proud of myself because I completed seven.
05:25 - 05:27
And so I have seven half marathon medals.
05:30 - 05:33
One of my first jobs and higher education was at
05:33 - 05:33
Ottawa University.
05:34 - 05:38
Yes, the same university where I went as a student
05:39 - 05:41
and earn my bachelor's degree.
05:41 - 05:45
Well, I ended up getting hired at one of their
05:45 - 05:51
locations and doing that they were doing marketing campaign and
05:51 - 05:54
they asked me to be part of a commercial.
05:55 - 05:57
So this is a clip of that that was, uh,
05:58 - 06:03
aired on the local television 2000 and nine.
06:04 - 06:06
The fall of 2000 and nine is when I started
06:06 - 06:07
my doctoral program.
06:08 - 06:14
So in that first class, we, um, had to give
06:14 - 06:19
some background of, you know, our journey and what we
06:19 - 06:22
hope to do now that we're in a doctoral program
06:22 - 06:23
after we earn the doctorate.
06:25 - 06:27
And so I was in the middle of recording it,
06:27 - 06:29
and I was trying to get it done while I
06:30 - 06:31
had the kids occupied at the park.
06:32 - 06:35
And so this is part of what I was able
06:35 - 06:40
to record for that first assignment in my doctoral program.
06:42 - 06:46
And again, this is like the summary, like the cumulative
06:48 - 06:53
artifact of the entire journey from beginning thio me earning
06:53 - 06:56
my doctorate and everything in between.
06:57 - 07:01
And so I'm showcasing pictures of the family of my
07:01 - 07:05
upbringing. And then also, you just kind of see me
07:05 - 07:07
sitting in front of the computer, those air times that
07:07 - 07:13
I was studying and me just overcoming obstacles and achieving
07:14 - 07:17
goals. And so that's what this video is about.
07:19 - 07:21
Again, I do not own the rights to the music,
07:22 - 07:24
but I thought that it was very fitting and it
07:24 - 07:27
partnered really well with the story that I was telling
07:27 - 07:34
through my pictures and finally Thio So we can keep
07:34 - 07:38
in contact with each other and you can remain updated
07:39 - 07:41
on where I am and what I'm doing.
07:43 - 07:45
We can stay connected via social media.
07:45 - 07:49
And so here are my social media platforms Instagram, LinkedIn
07:50 - 07:50
and Twitter.
07:51 - 07:54
So I would love to see you reading and being
07:55 - 07:56
engaged in my story in my book.
07:57 - 08:01
So if you don't mind a ZX, you are journeying
08:02 - 08:05
through my story to snap a picture and make sure
08:05 - 08:07
that you tag May I appreciate it?
08:10 - 08:14
Thank you again for taking the time Thio Click into
08:14 - 08:17

08:17 - 08:18
