00:01 - 00:02
Hello. Good people.
00:03 - 00:06
Now. I know you must be tired, you must be
00:06 - 00:09
tired because that midterm was a doozy.
00:10 - 00:14
And you guys have to finish those wonderful wonderful essay
00:14 - 00:15
number two revisions.
00:15 - 00:17
And I can't wait to start reading those today.
00:17 - 00:22
Now this week we're going to be working on comparative
00:24 - 00:26
analysis. This is gonna be our first class to actually
00:26 - 00:28
begin working on analysis.
00:29 - 00:32
And usually the first step that we take when we
00:32 - 00:35
try to do analysis is by focusing on comparison and
00:35 - 00:36
contrast writing.
00:36 - 00:39
Now I'm sure you all have done comparison and contrast
00:39 - 00:42
writing before in some capacity whether it be in grade
00:43 - 00:44
school or maybe in other classes.
00:45 - 00:48
But we're really gonna break down how comparison works really
00:48 - 00:51
from the standpoint of analysis and how we build good
00:51 - 00:53
comparison contrast writing in college.
00:54 - 00:58
All right now comparison and contrast isn't the only thing
00:58 - 00:59
that we're going to do.
01:00 - 01:00
All right.
01:00 - 01:02
We also have some other things on the agenda for
01:02 - 01:02
this week.
01:03 - 01:05
So coming out of the midterm, you need to know
01:06 - 01:09
that your midterm grades are going to be posted tomorrow
01:09 - 01:10
evening. Alright?
01:10 - 01:13
So tomorrow evening you guys are gonna have your midterm
01:14 - 01:16
grades and on Wednesday during my Wednesday lecture, I'm going
01:16 - 01:18
to talk a little bit about the midterm grades and
01:18 - 01:20
where we should go being in the mid point of
01:20 - 01:20
the semester.
01:20 - 01:25
Okay. So after your midterm grades, um we'll have that
01:26 - 01:28
conversation. The other thing I wanted to let you know
01:28 - 01:31
is that your essay number two grades will be posted
01:31 - 01:31
on friday?
01:32 - 01:34
Um It doesn't take me quite as long degrade the
01:34 - 01:37
essay number two because you know, I have a good
01:37 - 01:38
idea of where you were going and what you were
01:39 - 01:41
doing and from the conferences that I had with you
01:41 - 01:43
last week, we were able to talk a little bit
01:44 - 01:45
about what you needed to do.
01:45 - 01:47
So I can't wait to get those grades to you
01:47 - 01:50
look for those grades to be posted on friday.
01:51 - 01:53
So those are some clerical things that we want to
01:53 - 01:54
make sure we take up.
01:54 - 01:55
Well what are we gonna do in english?
01:55 - 01:57
Uh oh 99 for the reading.
01:57 - 02:00
Last week we started thinking about different types of articles
02:00 - 02:01
and I'm going to continue that conversation.
02:02 - 02:04
But one thing I love about comparison and contrast is
02:04 - 02:08
that we can use our comparison contrast techniques to help
02:08 - 02:13
us better understand and keyword synthesize what we read a
02:13 - 02:14
little bit more uh easily.
02:15 - 02:18
So in english or 99 what we're gonna do is
02:18 - 02:22
we're gonna use comparison and contrast Trask techniques to actually
02:22 - 02:25
begin to summarize the positions that different articles take.
02:26 - 02:28
You know, it's not about just reading the article and
02:29 - 02:30
then just telling me what the article says.
02:31 - 02:34
It's also thinking about how that article or how that
02:34 - 02:38
author is having a conversation with other articles and other
02:38 - 02:42
authors. So we need to begin putting together those conversations
02:43 - 02:43
in comparison.
02:43 - 02:45
And contrast helps us to do that.
02:46 - 02:51
Who's writing seems to lean towards similar positions, whose writing
02:52 - 02:54
seems to offer divergent opinions.
02:55 - 02:58
How do we talk about those in a very clear,
02:58 - 02:59
concise way?
02:59 - 03:00
How do we make it to flow?
03:01 - 03:03
That's the conversation that we want to have because whatever
03:03 - 03:05
we read, we want to do something with whatever we
03:06 - 03:06
read. Okay.
03:06 - 03:07
All right.
03:07 - 03:10
So you can see I'm in beautiful garden space is
03:10 - 03:13
not my usual porch, but I can't wait to get
03:13 - 03:18
my hands into the garden, literally and metaphorically, because you're
03:18 - 03:20
writing is also a garden that we need to cultivate,
03:21 - 03:22
pull out some weeds so that we can get the
03:23 - 03:23
good fruit to grow.
03:24 - 03:26
Alright, so looking forward to that process this week.
03:26 - 03:27
Hope to talk to you all soon.
03:28 - 03:29
Have a good one.
