00:02 - 00:07
Hi there, it's me, Bettina at Will and welcome to
00:07 - 00:08
the module and Children.
00:09 - 00:13
As writers, I was really compelled to create this module
00:14 - 00:16
and to share it with you because there's a reason
00:17 - 00:19
why I think we need to learn how to write.
00:20 - 00:24
And essentially it comes and was down to our need
00:24 - 00:26
to communicate whether it is.
00:26 - 00:30
We're writing a business plan, a short story, a novel,
00:31 - 00:33
a blog, an email, a letter.
00:34 - 00:38
We all need to know certain elements and we all
00:38 - 00:41
need to know how and why we need to communicate
00:42 - 00:46
these ideas and what better way when to start in
00:46 - 00:49
the early years when we can still find so much
00:49 - 00:53
joy. It's a joyful thing to be able to to
00:54 - 00:55
know how it is.
00:55 - 01:00
You can express yourself through descriptions and through words that
01:00 - 01:05
are just rich with color and rich with the words
01:06 - 01:07
that happened to the different senses.
01:08 - 01:11
And it takes a lot of time and a lot
01:11 - 01:15
of practice and a lot of process to be able
01:15 - 01:15
to write.
01:16 - 01:20
So just like art, where we focus on the process
01:21 - 01:24
of doing it compared to what the outcome or the
01:24 - 01:25
product would be.
01:26 - 01:28
Writing can also be the same way.
01:29 - 01:32
So welcome again to the module as Children as writers.
01:33 - 01:36
In this video, I will walk you through the different
01:37 - 01:42
elements of what we can use as our guides and
01:43 - 01:47
our our promise to writing with Children are too giving
01:47 - 01:50
Children the opportunity to be able to write.
01:51 - 01:56
And then I will conclude this with several examples from
01:56 - 01:58
what we have been writing over the years.
01:59 - 02:09
So welcome again to Children ask writers, Okay, here we
02:10 - 02:16
go. I wholeheartedly believe that Children are really authors of
02:16 - 02:17
their own story.
02:18 - 02:22
And so this module celebrates Children's voice through the art
02:22 - 02:24
of written word and visual cues.
02:28 - 02:31
There's a reason why we need to spend some time
02:32 - 02:32
on this.
02:33 - 02:36
Oftentimes we go to school and we learn to write
02:37 - 02:41
and we follow, we follow our teachers or we follow
02:41 - 02:44
worksheets and this is how we learn to write.
02:45 - 02:49
And it takes away our own pursuit and our own
02:49 - 02:54
creativity on finding that journey and finding what it is
02:54 - 02:57
that we love to write about when in essence writing
02:58 - 03:02
is all about communication and and if we can communicate
03:03 - 03:08
ourselves clearly then we can be able to write this
03:08 - 03:11
clearly. And this is a skill and this skill is
03:12 - 03:12
a process.
03:13 - 03:17
And this process can start from the joyful acts of
03:18 - 03:22
writing for the sake of writing and being able as
03:22 - 03:23
a space to be able to be creative.
03:24 - 03:29
So it allows Children to express themselves, to explore the
03:29 - 03:34
social and emotional aspects as they recreate their characters, they
03:35 - 03:38
write about their characters, they unfold their characters.
03:39 - 03:41
And then it allows Children to see the purpose of
03:42 - 03:44
writing and reading in their own lives.
03:45 - 03:48
It integrates so many different learning areas.
03:49 - 03:50
So this is a great way.
03:51 - 03:56
We can integrate the sciences, the maths, music and so
03:56 - 04:00
many other learning domains into the written word.
04:01 - 04:05
And we can intentionally aimed as to highlight that way
04:06 - 04:11
Children voice their learning processes because at the end of
04:12 - 04:15
the day the most important people here are the learners.
04:16 - 04:19
What they get out of this and what they make
04:19 - 04:22
out of it is what is so important.
04:23 - 04:25
And if we're going to spend some time with them
04:25 - 04:28
we might as well make things with them or allow
04:28 - 04:31
them to make things or to write things where they
04:31 - 04:32
will get something out of.
04:38 - 04:38
So C.
04:38 - 04:43
S. Lewis, famous author is famous for saying you can
04:43 - 04:44
make anything by writing.
04:48 - 04:51
Now let's walk through a few elements of writing with
04:51 - 04:54
Children. So the first thing we want to know is
04:54 - 04:58
that we want to be considerate of the skills of
04:58 - 05:03
the Children their interests and the level of enthusiasm when
05:03 - 05:04
it comes to writing.
05:04 - 05:09
Do they like writing sentences or do they shy away
05:10 - 05:11
from any writing exercises?
05:12 - 05:15
So we need to be considerate of where the learners
05:16 - 05:16
are at.
05:17 - 05:21
We want to reaffirm Children and their sense of expression,
05:22 - 05:25
so how they express themselves when they write today.
05:25 - 05:30
Like writing stories today, like using their imaginations, we want
05:30 - 05:32
to be able to capture this through words and even
05:33 - 05:36
if it will meet us doing all the writing to
05:36 - 05:38
begin with, that's totally okay.
05:39 - 05:41
We also want to prompt Children with visual reminders.
05:43 - 05:48
So writing can also be a really great way to
05:48 - 05:53
visually remind Children of what's happening next or what they
05:53 - 05:56
should be doing or what is expected of them.
05:56 - 05:59
And it also promotes Children's agency.
06:00 - 06:07
So this clearly shows how Children really are also intellectual
06:07 - 06:13
beings and they when they are developmentally ready and when
06:13 - 06:17
they already can embark on a really fun writing journey.
06:17 - 06:20
And it doesn't have to be stressful, it doesn't have
06:21 - 06:21
to be forced.
06:22 - 06:24
It doesn't have to be a teacher led.
06:24 - 06:27
It can be it can come from them in the
06:27 - 06:31
most and the easiest ways problem able.
06:32 - 06:35
So I will be sharing the samples with you later
06:36 - 06:41
and then we also have to highlight how it's about
06:41 - 06:41
the process.
06:42 - 06:46
Sometimes we'll come out with really good products such as
06:46 - 06:48
a whole book the Children might be able to write,
06:48 - 06:51
but sometimes it might just be a draft or a
06:51 - 06:56
brainstorm. But it's really a process and there's so many
06:56 - 07:00
processes when it comes to writing and that's something we
07:00 - 07:03
need to get through a swell when it's not just
07:03 - 07:06
art, That's a process, but it's also writing.
07:13 - 07:17
So um eat gallantry says the most difficult thing about
07:17 - 07:23
writing is writing the first line, but there's so many
07:23 - 07:28
books, so little time says frank zappa and don't read
07:29 - 07:31
books. Make presses assess me.
07:34 - 07:37
So where do we start first?
07:38 - 07:41
We need to find the purpose of what the book
07:42 - 07:43
or what it is.
07:43 - 07:44
You want Children to write?
07:44 - 07:47
Do you want Children to be able to know their
07:47 - 07:51
alphabets? Do you want do you want your child to
07:51 - 07:54
understand their emotions or do you want to see how
07:55 - 07:59
how deep your child's understanding of emotions are?
08:00 - 08:06
It really depends on what it is your Children or
08:06 - 08:10
your child is most interested in where you are at,
08:11 - 08:15
at this moment in life, what you're learning and what
08:16 - 08:18
and what is what are the skills?
08:19 - 08:21
Sometimes it might just be mark making.
08:21 - 08:24
Sometimes it might just be being part of the process
08:25 - 08:27
and not really doing anything which is being part of
08:27 - 08:32
it. Sometimes it might be doing most of the work.
08:32 - 08:35
So we really want to make sure that we know
08:36 - 08:37
the purpose behind it.
08:38 - 08:40
And then we organize and we curate the materials.
08:41 - 08:45
So are you you saying things that you're up cycling?
08:45 - 08:49
Like making an alphabet book from up cycled single use
08:50 - 08:54
packaging? Or are you making an emotions book?
08:54 - 08:57
Or are you making an art book or a family
08:57 - 09:01
book? You want to organize and have the materials ready?
09:02 - 09:05
And then you do this at the same time as
09:05 - 09:09
brainstorming, if it is a short story you're making, you
09:09 - 09:12
can make a story pyramid, you write down your ideas
09:13 - 09:16
and then you can start by drawing, cutting out pictures
09:17 - 09:20
and then you re create, you put the pages together
09:21 - 09:23
and easily you can find it.
09:25 - 09:33
Mhm. So binding things together, putting them together, creating this
09:33 - 09:37
book. Like feel it's one of the most fun and
09:38 - 09:42
fun and great experiences that we have as Children to
09:42 - 09:43
create their own books.
09:44 - 09:47
And at the same time that it gives us the
09:47 - 09:52
sense of agency that we we know we can and
09:53 - 09:55
there are some really great ways of finding.
09:56 - 10:00
You can simply just buying by stapling or punching holes
10:01 - 10:03
and allowing the Children to thread it through.
10:04 - 10:07
Or you can put a fastener, there's so many great
10:07 - 10:08
ways to find.
10:09 - 10:11
And once it's bound together and you spend a lot
10:12 - 10:15
of time in doing it, You read it together and
10:15 - 10:19
then you can revisit, reading it again and again throughout
10:20 - 10:20
the years.
10:20 - 10:23
So, these are things you don't just make out of,
10:24 - 10:28
you know, for one purpose only for grade perhaps or
10:28 - 10:32
whatnot. But these are things you can revisit and the
10:32 - 10:35
great thing about revisiting it as we get a new
10:36 - 10:38
set of eyes when we see it again and again
10:39 - 10:41
and this continues the writing process.
10:43 - 10:47
So, a great thing to know about writing processes, that
10:47 - 10:49
everything is also part of it.
10:49 - 10:54
And revisiting scene where we, what we lacked and what
10:54 - 10:58
we can do gives us a mental framework of what
10:59 - 11:00
we can do the next time.
11:01 - 11:04
So, in the next part of this video, I will
11:04 - 11:08
show you the different things that we have written over
11:08 - 11:11
the years and explain the elements in place.
11:11 - 11:14
I'll see you all very soon.
