Audio TranscriptAuto-generated 00:01 - 00:01 hi and welcome. 00:02 - 00:04 Today we're going to cover three of my best virtual 00:05 - 00:06 interview tips. 00:07 - 00:09 These apply whenever you are interviewing over video. 00:10 - 00:13 So my name is Kristen Joklik, and I'm founder of 00:13 - 00:14 simple video dot training. 00:14 - 00:16 You can type that into any browser, and I'll take 00:16 - 00:18 you to my website, where you can see that I 00:19 - 00:19 do just that. 00:20 - 00:23 I give simple video trainings on how to look more 00:23 - 00:26 professional on camera wherever you are virtually. 00:27 - 00:31 So let's dive in thes top three tips have to 00:31 - 00:31 do with. 00:31 - 00:34 First of all, what's aware this is the number one 00:34 - 00:37 question I get about being on video for interviews. 00:38 - 00:39 Number two is your virtual presence. 00:40 - 00:41 How do you have that professional presence? 00:42 - 00:43 That executive presence? 00:43 - 00:47 Whenever you're interviewing virtually and three, we're gonna talk about 00:47 - 00:48 your home office. 00:48 - 00:52 There's actually one key thing that recruiters and HR personnel 00:52 - 00:55 are looking for in your home office whenever you are 00:56 - 01:00 interviewing virtually all right, so let's dive in first off, 01:01 - 01:01 what to wear. 01:02 - 01:05 People actually get kind of concerned about this. 01:05 - 01:06 When they get worried, they start doing research. 01:07 - 01:10 They see things like don't wear prince and you need 01:10 - 01:11 a full face of makeup. 01:12 - 01:14 Well, I tell you what, those tips don't apply whenever 01:15 - 01:17 we're at home on our laptops on zoom. 01:17 - 01:20 All right, Whenever you're just at your desk, you're close 01:21 - 01:25 enough to your laptop that whatever you normally wear and 01:25 - 01:28 however you normally style your makeup or your hair is 01:28 - 01:31 going to be completely fine for your virtual interview. 01:31 - 01:33 You don't need to do anything extra. 01:34 - 01:37 Just show up as you normally would at an important 01:37 - 01:38 day at work, right? 01:39 - 01:39 They say. 01:39 - 01:41 Dress for the job that you want. 01:41 - 01:43 You do want to show up to the interview with 01:43 - 01:44 that extra level of polished. 01:45 - 01:48 But don't feel like you have thio developing your makeup 01:48 - 01:50 routine. Or do you do your hair a new way 01:50 - 01:52 or by any special clothing for this? 01:53 - 01:56 Okay, whatever is in your wardrobe is going to work 01:56 - 01:58 with a couple caveats, and I'll get to those in 01:58 - 01:58 a second. 02:00 - 02:02 So first off, I want to address the no prince 02:02 - 02:04 role that you'll hear about for video. 02:05 - 02:10 This absolutely applies for certain video circumstances, but let me 02:10 - 02:10 show you. 02:10 - 02:14 I got some samples here, so here we have a 02:14 - 02:18 men's blazer with a print, and it is just a 02:18 - 02:19 really subtle. 02:20 - 02:22 I'm not even sure we call this like. 02:22 - 02:25 It's not a check, but, you know, even if it's 02:25 - 02:28 a little bit blurry on video, this would just blend 02:28 - 02:28 into one color. 02:29 - 02:30 But you can see like you could move this around 02:31 - 02:32 the patterns, not causing any distractions. 02:33 - 02:36 The patterns, not looking funny things is a completely wonderful 02:36 - 02:38 pattern. Toe wear on video. 02:38 - 02:40 If you have a jacket like this and wearing a 02:41 - 02:45 blazer is appropriate for your role in your interview, go 02:45 - 02:45 ahead and wear it. 02:48 - 02:48 Another example. 02:49 - 02:51 This is a bold, beautiful print right here. 02:51 - 02:54 There's nothing wrong with wearing this if it's already in 02:54 - 02:56 your wardrobe and something that people could expect you to 02:56 - 02:58 wear on a normal day at work. 02:58 - 02:59 Okay, the colors show up. 03:00 - 03:00 They're not distracting. 03:01 - 03:01 They're not looking bad. 03:02 - 03:03 There's nothing wrong with wearing this print. 03:04 - 03:06 The one thing I will caution against, though, is that 03:06 - 03:10 sometimes white can be very hard toe light on video. 03:10 - 03:13 So if you don't have really great lighting on your 03:13 - 03:15 video, I would avoid wearing white because otherwise and come 03:16 - 03:17 off a little dingy. 03:17 - 03:20 Instead, opt for any color, even a pastel one over 03:21 - 03:24 white However, if your wardrobe is on Lee White shirts, 03:25 - 03:25 go for it. 03:26 - 03:28 No one's gonna count any points against you for that. 03:31 - 03:32 Alright, One more pattern. 03:32 - 03:35 A really graphic, bright, bold print. 03:35 - 03:37 I want to do include this one because it does 03:37 - 03:38 have a lot of detail in the print, and people 03:39 - 03:41 will say that Don't use anything without a detail in 03:41 - 03:41 the print. 03:42 - 03:42 Don't use small prints. 03:43 - 03:45 It's completely fine and acceptable toe wear. 03:46 - 03:48 Print like this if that's what you would normally wear 03:48 - 03:48 toe work. 03:50 - 03:51 All right now, the big caveat. 03:52 - 03:53 Don't wear black. 03:54 - 03:57 The thing about black is that you know when I 03:57 - 03:59 have, this is far away from the camera as I 04:00 - 04:03 am. You actually lose all of the texture in black, 04:03 - 04:05 and that's because black doesn't reflect light. 04:05 - 04:08 It absorbs it all, so you lose any detail that's 04:09 - 04:09 in the short. 04:09 - 04:11 You just kind of look like a weird a Morphosis 04:12 - 04:14 blob when you wear black on screen. 04:15 - 04:17 And it's not just because I matched my background right 04:17 - 04:21 now, you know, unless your wardrobe is Onley black clothing, 04:22 - 04:26 I would I would avoid black in the interview or 04:26 - 04:29 go for something that's more textured or has a little 04:29 - 04:32 bit of shine to it to help differentiate your clothing 04:33 - 04:35 s so they can see a little bit more of 04:35 - 04:37 youths goes for men and women. 04:38 - 04:41 I do recommend avoiding black on camera, even though it's 04:41 - 04:41 great in person. 04:44 - 04:47 All right, so another little tip about what's aware on 04:47 - 04:50 video is where what makes you feel good? 04:51 - 04:53 Where would put you in the right mental space gives 04:53 - 04:56 you the right energy to show up for this interview, 04:56 - 04:57 so you're gonna crush it. 04:58 - 05:01 What that might mean is it might mean, you know, 05:01 - 05:05 the traditional zoom wardrobe of business on top pajamas on 05:05 - 05:06 bottom. Totally fine. 05:07 - 05:10 But for those interviews, some people are going to feel 05:11 - 05:14 a little more in the zone when they're wearing suit 05:14 - 05:16 pants on bottom or when they're really wearing their high 05:17 - 05:19 heels on their feet, even if they're not visible in 05:19 - 05:20 the camera. 05:20 - 05:22 Some people get that extra little bit of mojo from 05:22 - 05:25 wearing the full out foot head to toe while at 05:25 - 05:28 home. If that's you go for it could not encourage 05:28 - 05:28 that marks. 05:29 - 05:32 It's all about showing up your best on Zoom, not 05:32 - 05:35 just presentation wise, but with your energy and your personality 05:35 - 05:37 and your professionalism and your expertise. 05:38 - 05:41 All right, let's move on to item number two here, 05:42 - 05:43 which is your virtual presence. 05:45 - 05:49 This is how you look professional on video. 05:50 - 05:53 Now, the set up I have right here is a 05:53 - 05:55 little over the top for the standard interview. 05:56 - 05:58 But there are a few key things I'm doing that 05:58 - 05:59 you're going toe. 05:59 - 06:00 Want to steal? 06:01 - 06:04 Now, most people, whenever they get on Zoom, they're going 06:04 - 06:06 to sit there with a laptop underneath them. 06:07 - 06:08 And you're gonna be kind of looking up from from 06:09 - 06:12 down below, which is a very unnatural, you know, scenario 06:13 - 06:13 for people. 06:13 - 06:15 Normally for all sitting at a table, it's more of 06:15 - 06:15 like an idea. 06:16 - 06:16 I situation. 06:17 - 06:18 So you do want to get yourself in a place 06:19 - 06:23 where you're looking directly into your camera at I level. 06:24 - 06:27 Another thing to do for your virtual presence is to 06:27 - 06:30 make sure that you're calm and relaxed and you're able 06:30 - 06:31 to express your confidence. 06:32 - 06:36 Virtually now, most people are able to crush it with 06:36 - 06:37 their presence in person. 06:38 - 06:40 But on camera people could be a little bit lacking 06:40 - 06:42 because we're used to being in the room with people 06:43 - 06:45 and a lot of us feed off of that energy. 06:46 - 06:48 We get into a different headspace whenever we're in a 06:49 - 06:49 room with other people. 06:50 - 06:52 And when they're just on that little screen and we 06:52 - 06:55 have, like ourselves, showing up on zooming, we can't stop 06:56 - 06:56 staring at ourselves. 06:57 - 07:00 We could get distracted, and it's just harder to get 07:01 - 07:01 in that space. 07:02 - 07:04 So just really try to remember the last time you 07:05 - 07:07 were in a room with people that got you really 07:07 - 07:10 lit up and you had that presence that you're going 07:10 - 07:13 for, like spend a few minutes before your interview, like 07:13 - 07:17 just sitting there like mentally remembering that experience, remembering how 07:17 - 07:19 it felt in your body, remembering what your body did. 07:19 - 07:22 Maybe you stood up straight, or maybe your shoulders went 07:22 - 07:22 back and down. 07:23 - 07:24 Maybe you held your head a little bit higher. 07:25 - 07:25 How did you speak? 07:26 - 07:31 All right, get back into that zone of physical presence 07:31 - 07:35 before hopping on that all important video interview to get 07:35 - 07:36 you in a great headspace. 07:38 - 07:41 All right, moving on to tip number three, your home 07:41 - 07:45 office. Now, one thing that I've learned after talking to 07:45 - 07:48 a bunch of recruiters and HR personnel who do a 07:49 - 07:53 lot of hiring is that in today's world, with everything 07:53 - 07:58 gone virtual for all of 2020 they're realizing that by 07:58 - 08:03 having interviews virtually they're saving a lot of time and 08:03 - 08:07 money. So even if you plan on interviewing in the 08:07 - 08:11 future, it's likely going to be remote still okay for 08:11 - 08:13 any role because of the time and money savings. 08:15 - 08:18 So and well, actually, let me say, in addition to 08:18 - 08:22 that, um, we're likely going to be working remotely, more 08:22 - 08:23 often, more jobs. 08:23 - 08:26 They're going to stay remote, maybe forever. 08:27 - 08:31 So whenever you're interviewing recruiters and HR, people are also 08:32 - 08:34 secretly evaluating your home office set up. 08:35 - 08:38 Do you have a place in your home toe work 08:38 - 08:42 where you can stay focused where it's quiet often enough, 08:43 - 08:46 where you're able to be super effective while at home? 08:47 - 08:49 You know, if during your interview it looks like you're 08:50 - 08:52 sitting in your kitchen and they can hear kids running 08:52 - 08:55 around and they can hear someone else in the home 08:55 - 08:58 you know, yelling for something during that interview, they are 08:58 - 09:01 going to question how effective you're going to be working 09:01 - 09:03 from home if the position is going to be remote. 09:04 - 09:08 So the important thing here is to invest the time 09:09 - 09:10 now to figure out where you're going. 09:11 - 09:12 Toe work remotely full time. 09:12 - 09:15 If you haven't done this already, and even if you 09:15 - 09:17 have done it, go ahead and put in a little 09:17 - 09:17 bit of extra. 09:18 - 09:20 Put a little bit of polish on that home office 09:20 - 09:21 space. Make sure it's quiet. 09:22 - 09:22 Make sure it's secluded. 09:23 - 09:24 Make sure it's set up for efficacy. 09:26 - 09:27 And this isn't something that you have to put on 09:28 - 09:31 display in your in your interview, but some wall some 09:31 - 09:34 part of your home is going to be behind you, 09:35 - 09:37 so just make sure that it looks neat and tidy 09:37 - 09:38 and not distracting. 09:40 - 09:42 Now, if you don't wanna have your home on display 09:43 - 09:46 in a video interview or while you're working, you know 09:46 - 09:48 the interview is the time to establish that so you 09:48 - 09:50 can get screens like this one I have back here. 09:51 - 09:54 Um, I have all the links to about this screen 09:54 - 09:58 and how I use it and everything on the link 09:58 - 09:59 that's actually down below. 09:59 - 10:01 In the description of this video, you can go check 10:01 - 10:04 out that link, learn about this black background I have. 10:04 - 10:06 It's held up by a tripod and a special little 10:06 - 10:10 clip. Super easy to use super low profile and afford 10:11 - 10:14 you that level of privacy you may want during your 10:14 - 10:17 interviews and during your remote work life again. 10:18 - 10:20 This backgrounds like this are totally not necessary. 10:21 - 10:24 And just having your neat and tidy dedicated home office 10:25 - 10:28 space behind you during your interview is going to be, 10:28 - 10:33 ah, great way to give recruiters and HR high confidence 10:34 - 10:36 that you are set up for success working from home.
