00:00 - 00:05
Hello. The book that I decided to read was the Women of Silk. Like else Uchiyama.
00:05 - 00:11
Um It's a story about a young girl's life growing up in the silk factory.
00:11 - 00:14
Her name is P and um it's about her life growing over the silk factory
00:15 - 00:20
In rural China in during 1926, which is right before World War II.
00:20 - 00:22
The story starts off as her as a young girl
00:22 - 00:25
with her family and her father figures out she's not going
00:25 - 00:30
to be able to marry so she is sent to the silk factory at just the age of 10 I believe.
00:30 - 00:31
Um
00:33 - 00:37
The story is kind of slow throughout her first few years of being at the factory,
00:37 - 00:40
but basically they work from dawn to dusk in the
00:40 - 00:44
factory to earn money for their families back at home.
00:44 - 00:46
And she lives in a girl's house with a bunch
00:46 - 00:47
of other women who also worked at the factory.
00:47 - 00:50
She makes friends. One of her best friend's name is Lynn.
00:51 - 00:54
Um And later on in the middle of the story,
00:54 - 00:59
they perform a boycott or a protest and they strike and none of the
00:59 - 01:05
women work there protesting the minimum wage and the hours that they work,
01:05 - 01:07
they do end up succeeding and um
01:08 - 01:11
they end up receiving a higher minimum wage and less hours of work.
01:11 - 01:13
However, one of her friends
01:13 - 01:18
um is, it ends up being shot and killed during one of the protests.
01:18 - 01:23
Um Later on her and Lynn, her best friend lin basically
01:24 - 01:29
took in and adopted p as like her younger sister and
01:29 - 01:31
he really looks up to Landon is very dependent on her,
01:31 - 01:35
so when Lynn decides that she's gonna perform the haircut ceremony which
01:35 - 01:38
is where you devote your entire life to the silk factory.
01:38 - 01:42
You transitioned from the girl's house to the sister's house and
01:43 - 01:45
you're in the sisterhood of the factory, you can't go get married,
01:45 - 01:46
you can't have kids.
01:46 - 01:50
Your life is devoted to the fact to the silk work and soapy decides to
01:50 - 01:54
go with Lynn because she feels she can't live without lin so they go together
01:54 - 01:55
um
01:56 - 02:01
And then their life transitions to the sisterhood in the in the sister's house.
02:02 - 02:03
Um
02:04 - 02:08
She, the main character suffers many losses, such as her best friend,
02:08 - 02:10
john's herself, the caretaker of the girl's house,
02:10 - 02:12
ends up passing away throughout the story,
02:12 - 02:15
her mother ends up passing away towards the end of the book.
02:15 - 02:20
Um At the end the japanese are closing in on their town where
02:20 - 02:23
they work at and so they need to escape to Hong kong.
02:23 - 02:29
Um Lynn ends up passing away at the very end of the story in a in a
02:29 - 02:35
in a fire that destroys the whole silk factory and she dies in the fire.
02:35 - 02:36
Um He's devastated,
02:36 - 02:40
but the story ends up ends with her moving to Hong kong without lin.
02:41 - 02:45
Um It's a very beautifully written story about
02:45 - 02:49
the very difficult life of her growing up without her parents
02:50 - 02:54
um Just herself and it's filled with this,
02:54 - 02:58
it's a pretty sad book but there's also beauty in it.
02:58 - 02:59
I enjoyed the book.
02:59 - 03:00
Um
03:01 - 03:02
I probably read it a four out of four out
03:02 - 03:05
of five if you don't enjoy slow moving books though.
03:05 - 03:07
I probably wouldn't recommend this for you as
03:07 - 03:10
it doesn't follow a specific story plot.
03:10 - 03:11
It just
03:11 - 03:15
beautifully describes her life throughout the slope work.
03:15 - 03:17
I enjoyed it.
03:17 - 03:20
Um, but yeah, I would probably run a 4-5.
03:21 - 03:21
So yeah.
