00:01 - 00:03
Hello. My name is Maria Prieto, and I am a
00:03 - 00:04
freshman at Virginia State University.
00:06 - 00:09
I am currently majoring it in political science, and I
00:09 - 00:10
hope to declare a minor in economics.
00:13 - 00:15
And I live in Alexandra, Virginia.
00:15 - 00:18
I've been living here for about three years, but I
00:18 - 00:18
am from Venezuela.
00:20 - 00:23
So one of the first lessons I remember, um from
00:24 - 00:27
the freshman studies class was learning about traditions at Virginia
00:28 - 00:31
State. And it was really interesting to find out that
00:31 - 00:35
we can't step on the Trojans head, because supposedly we
00:35 - 00:36
might not graduate on time.
00:37 - 00:40
But it's also helpful to know that we can walk
00:40 - 00:42
through that fountain right there in order to kind of
00:43 - 00:44
like a reverse the curse.
00:45 - 00:47
Um, I thought that was really interesting, and I I
00:47 - 00:49
was super excited to learn about these things on campus.
00:51 - 00:53
And I wish I could have a picture of myself
00:54 - 00:56
on campus, but I do not.
00:56 - 00:58
I hope that we will all go to camps in
00:58 - 00:58
spring, though.
01:01 - 01:05
So another thing about the classes that, um, Dr Roberts
01:05 - 01:07
and Dr Hobson made us talk a lot about ourselves
01:08 - 01:10
and like this activities that we had to turn in
01:11 - 01:13
and I found that really helpful because I feel like
01:13 - 01:15
not always.
01:15 - 01:17
We are put in a position that we just have
01:17 - 01:19
to speak about ourselves and what we like, what we
01:20 - 01:23
want. Um, and it's also something hard to figure out,
01:23 - 01:25
and I feel like I'm still figuring myself out.
01:25 - 01:27
But thanks to this class, I was able to at
01:27 - 01:31
least get some of my focus is and the activities
01:32 - 01:34
that help me to do this was, for example, the
01:35 - 01:38
an emotive video that I had to basically explain who
01:38 - 01:41
I am, where things I like to do, where things
01:41 - 01:42
I value the most.
01:42 - 01:46
And within those I talked about my family, um, in
01:46 - 01:48
my three siblings that are right here.
01:49 - 01:51
This is a screenshot of the video, and I found
01:51 - 01:54
it really helpful because I don't necessarily know how toe
01:54 - 01:56
introduce myself sometimes.
01:56 - 01:58
So I think that was that was really good to
01:58 - 02:00
figure out where things I like the most where I
02:00 - 02:02
think that probably the most, um, and that I want
02:02 - 02:03
people to know about me.
02:05 - 02:09
Another thing that I activity that we did recently was
02:10 - 02:14
a vision board, and I found that really inspiring just
02:14 - 02:18
because it realize that all these things I can accomplish
02:18 - 02:21
them. And even though they might seem far away or
02:21 - 02:23
they might seem like it takes, ah, lot of effort,
02:24 - 02:24
it does.
02:25 - 02:25
But it will pay off.
02:26 - 02:26
The effort will pay off.
02:27 - 02:28
So I found that very inspiring.
02:28 - 02:30
And now when I feel a little down or I
02:30 - 02:31
feel like I have too many things to do and
02:32 - 02:34
I'm overwhelmed, I go look at it and I like
02:34 - 02:35
This is what I want And this is what I'm
02:36 - 02:36
working for.
02:36 - 02:38
So I really appreciated that activity that we had to
02:38 - 02:43
dio. Another thing that I found helpful was learned about
02:43 - 02:45
note taking strategies and in the screen.
02:45 - 02:47
I put some notes that I take.
02:48 - 02:51
I take digital notes now, Um, and it just helps
02:51 - 02:54
me to lay out the themes in the topics, and
02:54 - 02:56
I usually use the mapping method.
02:56 - 02:59
We also learned about it in class, Um, but I
02:59 - 03:02
found that extremely useful, and now I feel like I'm
03:02 - 03:04
more organized when it comes to my notes, and that's
03:04 - 03:07
super important in order to like study for tests and
03:08 - 03:09
all these activities that we have to do in classes.
03:10 - 03:13
Another super important thing was time management, and I don't
03:14 - 03:16
think I realized how much I would need to learn
03:17 - 03:18
about this or how much I would need to learn
03:18 - 03:19
to organize myself.
03:20 - 03:23
I started working remotely when this mercy it when this
03:23 - 03:28
master started and I I found myself having little to
03:28 - 03:29
no time to do things.
03:29 - 03:31
So I had to really make a schedule every day,
03:32 - 03:35
and I decided to get an agenda.
03:35 - 03:37
And I write everything I have to get done in
03:37 - 03:39
a day and I kind of write a schedule for
03:39 - 03:39
the day.
03:40 - 03:41
And even though sometimes it might be a little hard
03:42 - 03:45
to complete, it will work the best in order to
03:45 - 03:46
do all the things I have to do.
03:47 - 03:49
And another thing was that our power document.
03:49 - 03:51
It really made me realize how much time like one
03:52 - 03:53
might spend on things that we don't need to spend
03:54 - 03:55
so much time like social media.
03:55 - 03:57
Our phones like watching TV and all this stuff.
03:58 - 04:00
Teamwork was super important in the class.
04:01 - 04:05
Um, it really I don't think I had as much
04:05 - 04:07
of, ah teamwork experience in high school.
04:07 - 04:10
I've always been very like a new individual person However,
04:10 - 04:13
I really enjoyed this opportunity to talk with my classmates,
04:14 - 04:16
especially since we're not in a face to face learning
04:16 - 04:18
environment. I found it extremely helpful.
04:19 - 04:20
I met a lot of nice people.
04:20 - 04:22
Now we have groups talk to each other about assignments,
04:23 - 04:25
and I found that like we created a community.
04:27 - 04:31
Another thing is that I've met a lot of students
04:31 - 04:33
in the honors program that aren't necessarily in my class.
04:34 - 04:36
But I also found that extremely helpful since I could
04:36 - 04:38
get an insight of what you know on campus will
04:38 - 04:39
be like what being in the program.
04:39 - 04:43
Really? It's like So, yeah, did this QE assessment?
04:44 - 04:46
I found out things about myself that I didn't necessarily
04:47 - 04:52
know. My dominant scores was about 30% and I found
04:52 - 04:52
out to be extremely high.
04:53 - 04:55
I've always thought of more like laid back type of
04:55 - 04:59
person, but I guess I'm not on Dwell.
04:59 - 05:03
What I want to my conclusion to be is that
05:04 - 05:07
this class really helped me figure out things in my
05:07 - 05:09
freshman year, and I feel like I now have a
05:09 - 05:11
lot of tools that I will be using not only
05:11 - 05:13
my freshman year, but throughout my college experience.
05:14 - 05:16
And I learned about B s you culture that I
05:16 - 05:18
didn't necessarily know before.
05:18 - 05:20
And I have so much bride for my school and
05:21 - 05:24
just tools to be successful and how to get involved
05:25 - 05:28
and just be there and and be successful in school.
05:30 - 05:30
Thank you.
