00:02 - 00:04
Hi ladies and gentlemen, it's Missile Vanni.
00:05 - 00:09
I am your students, english language arts teacher and thank
00:09 - 00:11
you for coming to virtual open house tonight.
00:12 - 00:16
Um, I'm really proud and grateful this year for all
00:16 - 00:20
that we've been able to accomplish, given the, um, just
00:21 - 00:24
bizarre and extraordinary circumstances we found ourselves in this year.
00:25 - 00:28
Um, we've gotten so much done, so We've done three
00:29 - 00:29
units total.
00:30 - 00:33
Our first one is called in pursuit and it looked
00:34 - 00:38
at, um, goals and accomplishments and what drives people to
00:38 - 00:39
achieve them.
00:39 - 00:42
Um, I started the year getting to know the kids
00:42 - 00:44
with and I am from poem.
00:44 - 00:46
Um, and these were really great.
00:46 - 00:50
I really recommend that you, um, kind of ask your
00:50 - 00:52
kid if they can find the one that they wrote
00:52 - 00:54
and have them read it to you or something like
00:54 - 00:58
that. Um, We also looked in this unit at parts
00:59 - 00:59
of plot.
00:59 - 01:02
So talking about plot diagram was always a good thing
01:02 - 01:04
to review um, for looking at fiction.
01:05 - 01:07
Um, we went through a whole lot of texts in
01:07 - 01:11
this unit, some where excerpts some were full stories, it
01:12 - 01:15
just depends on um what the text was.
01:16 - 01:19
And then we finished out the unit by having students
01:20 - 01:24
interview someone who accomplished a goal or um some sort
01:25 - 01:26
of mission that they were trying to achieve.
01:26 - 01:32
And um then right creative nonfiction narrative about that person.
01:33 - 01:38
Um In our second unit we looked at poetry and
01:39 - 01:42
poetry is one of my favorite things and it's not
01:42 - 01:43
always the students favorites.
01:43 - 01:45
Um But we try to make it all right for
01:45 - 01:49
them. We looked at several poems, we did a group
01:49 - 01:50
of poems by Jack Polunsky.
01:51 - 01:55
Um And then they had to write an analysis essay
01:55 - 01:56
about that.
01:56 - 01:58
Um Pawlowski has some funny poetry.
01:59 - 02:02
If you um have never read his poetry, it's pretty
02:02 - 02:02
it's pretty entertaining.
02:03 - 02:05
Um So the kids seem to like it.
02:05 - 02:08
Okay. And then the last thing we did was to
02:08 - 02:10
kind of really go into looking at figurative language.
02:11 - 02:16
We um had students create a poetry music website where
02:16 - 02:21
they analyze the similarities between um the figurative language used
02:21 - 02:25
in poems and also how it's used in lyrics of
02:25 - 02:26
popular songs.
02:27 - 02:28
So that was kind of fun.
02:29 - 02:33
And our current unit, the third unit that we're currently
02:33 - 02:35
working on, you can actually see this board right behind
02:36 - 02:36
me here.
02:36 - 02:40
Um is we are reading dystopian literature.
02:41 - 02:43
So we're doing this in kind of like a book
02:43 - 02:49
club format where Students are Reading one of 4 different
02:49 - 02:52
books. So we're talking about, okay what's the difference between
02:53 - 02:56
something that's a utopia or dystopia then how do these
02:57 - 03:01
um worlds in the books that they're reading qualify as
03:01 - 03:01
those things?
03:02 - 03:06
Um Here's their little cute faces with their books.
03:07 - 03:09
I was did this as an assignment, a book selfies
03:09 - 03:11
so that they could prove that they had picked up
03:11 - 03:12
the book for me.
03:12 - 03:18
Um Then um we're going to finish this unit up
03:19 - 03:19
sometime this week.
03:20 - 03:24
Um It if you want to know where your student
03:24 - 03:27
is that they should have this bookmark with them that
03:28 - 03:30
shows the reading schedule but they'll be finishing up the
03:31 - 03:33
all of the books this week but they'll still keep
03:33 - 03:36
them for the next couple of weeks and um start
03:37 - 03:39
and then we'll do a project to end out the
03:39 - 03:42
year and then it'll be done.
03:43 - 03:44
I can't believe the year is almost over.
03:45 - 03:49
Um So just in closing I just I wanted to
03:50 - 03:53
say how much I appreciate everyone in our school community
03:54 - 03:54
this year.
03:55 - 03:58
Like it it's been a rough year and it's it's
03:58 - 04:00
where you can really see how helpful and supportive people
04:01 - 04:01
can be.
04:01 - 04:03
So just I wanted to say thank you to Mr
04:04 - 04:08
Kristofferson and the other administrators as well as um the
04:08 - 04:12
office staff is so helpful and wonderful at helping getting
04:12 - 04:13
things done.
04:13 - 04:17
And then I couldn't have survived without my student teacher
04:17 - 04:17
this year.
04:18 - 04:19
Mr Martin has been super wonderful.
04:20 - 04:22
He's led, the class is a whole bunch of times.
04:22 - 04:26
He's um and his teaching credential already got a job
04:26 - 04:27
lined up for next year.
04:28 - 04:33
Um Delana Miller was my long term substitute while I
04:33 - 04:35
was out on leave for a couple of months in
04:35 - 04:35
the winter.
04:35 - 04:38
And so I really appreciate her as well.
04:38 - 04:41
And then last but not least um if you're watching
04:42 - 04:45
this right now like it it means that you really
04:45 - 04:48
care about your kids education and you're you're showing them
04:49 - 04:52
that you value it and I appreciate you parents just
04:53 - 04:56
making sure that you're getting those kids up every day,
04:56 - 04:57
getting them logged into zoom.
04:58 - 05:00
We've all had to learn things this year that we
05:00 - 05:03
didn't know before, so thank you so much for everything
05:04 - 05:04
that you do.
05:05 - 05:09
Um and I just really appreciate you and hope that
05:09 - 05:13
next year is amazing in a boring way and just
05:13 - 05:16
like the most normal boring school year ever, that's kind
05:17 - 05:21
of what I'm hoping for next year, but hope that
05:21 - 05:25
helps show what we've done and this year and um
05:25 - 05:27
have a great night, have a fun night watching about
05:28 - 05:29
what all the other classes are doing as well.
05:30 - 05:30
Hi.
