  1. Hello and welcome T. D. 300.
  2. 1st week it's kind of a short week being that first
  3. week of school september 7th through the 11th which is fun.
  4. So a few just housekeeping things.
  5. I want to welcome you to this asynchronous course.
  6. Asynchronous meaning that it is completely online.
  7. Every week you will have a video from me that kind of gives the gist of what's going on.
  8. Um I want you to know that I'm here for you to reach out to me at any point in time.
  9. You're welcome to join me for office hours.
  10. Um My office hours are going to be sorry I don't have that
  11. in front of me and I changed them slightly from last year.
  12. My office hours are monday 12 so noon to 1 30
  13. then again on Wednesday from 11 to 1 30.
  14. And then by appointment if you need me I do offer a zoom office hour on Wednesday night
  15. from 7 to 8 p.m. But I am very willing to meet with you other times too.
  16. So if that time doesn't work any of those times don't work make sure
  17. you just send me an email they would 21 at Uw super dot E.
  18. D. U.
  19. And we'll just schedule time.
  20. Give me a few options say hey I would love to meet with
  21. you can you meet on Tuesday at six p.m. Or whatever it is.
  22. Um If it doesn't work for me I will tell you
  23. that and I will give you a couple other options.
  24. So that's why it's best if you start with a couple right away
  25. already, there's always going to be a discussion,
  26. there's always going to be an assignment of some sort.
  27. Okay.
  28. Um My goal is to give you feedback. Sometimes that takes a day after the due date.
  29. Sometimes it takes two or three depending on the length of the assignment,
  30. bigger the assignment the longer it is.
  31. But I do give a thorough um reflection on on improvements and things that
  32. you did well and and I want it to be useful to you.
  33. We're really focused on student growth. Now.
  34. Oftentimes I use an apple pencil and an ipad
  35. when I grade papers not the discussions but papers
  36. for some reason you can't read my handwriting because
  37. it does get kind of skewed in that program.
  38. Please reach out to me immediately and say hey that
  39. comment on page three I can't quite make out.
  40. Um I will I will then clarify that for you.
  41. Alrighty so again short week um I'll kind of go
  42. through the basics here and give you a better welcome
  43. of the textbook that you need is this one. Educational Philosophy in teaching.
  44. We will be reading the rule of thumb a chapter a week.
  45. Okay so for week one we are reading chapter one and it's really all about
  46. educational psychology,
  47. Understanding learning and teaching and and it gets
  48. us going into that teacher interview project.
  49. That tip project but just describing what expert teaching is,
  50. what is an expert teacher and you had some and
  51. I'm sure you had some that were not expert teachers.
  52. Okay.
  53. And and those, those moments in our life,
  54. they really do define us and you will find as a teacher that
  55. most particularly those moments that affected you negatively,
  56. you are more conscious of in your teaching and you will avoid that at all costs.
  57. So really because those moments and our experiences define us,
  58. we become better teachers for it.
  59. Typically um, some things to keep in mind,
  60. this is an ever changing educational world.
  61. Okay.
  62. Um 21st century skills that we need to think about as we go into
  63. expert teaching and to try to keep up with the times is is yes,
  64. we teach content.
  65. That's our job. If you're a math teacher, you're teaching math.
  66. But more importantly, we need to teach those 21st century skills,
  67. skills and collaboration on creative creativity, critical thinking,
  68. teaching Children how to communicate okay,
  69. especially in this technological world.
  70. Um
  71. we're going to acknowledge that our classrooms have changed for me,
  72. even when you were in school,
  73. they've changed from the last two years since
  74. I have been out of an elementary classroom,
  75. they've changed dramatically and it's our job to stay up with all of that.
  76. Um, and to continue doing the best we can for our students,
  77. you really becoming a teacher, you have signed up to be a lifelong learner, okay.
  78. Um
  79. and with that you're always going to be learning theories and different things.
  80. This book is chocked full of theories and you're
  81. gonna feel like I can't remember all these,
  82. I have no idea, I'll never keep these all straight.
  83. No you won't and it's fine and theories are just that their theories as a teacher,
  84. I know that I teach in my my way, it's my philosophy,
  85. it's it's what I'm comfortable with but its pieces and parts of different theory.
  86. Okay. I don't have to say I'm only going to teach in the P. J.
  87. Theory or I'm only going to teach in the behaviorist theory.
  88. No no no no you're going to teach in parts that work for you and that's fine. Okay
  89. so keep that in mind as we go forward.
  90. Another thing that happens in this course is your first lesson plan.
  91. There's a lesson plan module already embedded in this course.
  92. That is the template we use in this program.
  93. Um So you'll have your first experience with it and
  94. I will be there to help you along the way and
  95. I want you to note that lesson planning in this
  96. way and it will get easier the further you progress.
  97. But we have to start somewhere and we start with a very in depth plan
  98. but know
  99. that we're focusing on growth
  100. and know that lesson planning
  101. is a marathon and it is not a sprint. Okay so it's exciting.
  102. We're gonna learn a lot all the way up till that point and then
  103. we'll start writing our first lesson plan towards the end of this course,
  104. this week,
  105. this week alone, you have a discussion,
  106. we have a discussion board in this course. Okay.
  107. Typically the format goes where there's a prompt, you answer it,
  108. try to get it in by like thursday or friday the latest
  109. and then go back in and reply to at least two piers,
  110. two or three of your peers and then go back
  111. and check it one more time before sunday at nine p.m.
  112. And respond to anyone that responded to you this week
  113. is a little bit different because you are posting,
  114. you are embedding a video, post your video by friday.
  115. Okay.
  116. And the reason you want to post that three minute, give or take video,
  117. make sure you look at the rubric by friday is because that gives
  118. your peers some time to look at a couple of videos Okay?
  119. And provide you with some insight.
  120. Um and you're providing not only me but your peers some insight about who you are.
  121. Okay.
  122. It really helps guide this course as we go for all of us and I really,
  123. I take time to watch each and every one of those and
  124. I give you feedback and I'm going to ask you questions,
  125. But it gives me a way to build that community and know what you need in this
  126. course and you need from me and how I can tailor it to fit those needs.
  127. Okay, so again,
  128. try to post your video embed your video by Friday
  129. reply to a few peers by Sunday at nine.
  130. Okay. This course runs that way.
  131. Okay. I want everything in
  132. Sunday at nine p.m. Okay?
  133. Let's see. So pay attention to all the two dates
  134. as you as you go along. They're all in canvas.
  135. Next one assignment.
  136. This is a checkpoint. We'll call it. Okay? You have to do it. Okay?
  137. It has to be done by sunday night the 11th and I'm just making sure canvases up to date.
  138. So I'll do that as I go sunday night
  139. september 11th at nine p.m. It's truly a checkpoint.
  140. Your first big project is a teacher interview project. We're gonna call it the tip.
  141. Okay.
  142. And every week for five weeks before that is do what you have is little checkpoints.
  143. So I know you're working on it and it
  144. gives you an opportunity to ask questions if needed.
  145. Of me.
  146. Your first job this week is to think
  147. about something you're someone you're going to interview?
  148. Ok. A teacher.
  149. Okay.
  150. What's the content? What's the grade level?
  151. Are they an elementary teacher in fifth grade?
  152. Are they a math teacher in ninth grade? What do they do? Tell me that?
  153. Where where are they located? What school and how long have they been teaching?
  154. Okay.
  155. And then what uncertainties do you have at this time and
  156. don't think about uncertainties as being just that teacher interview project.
  157. Think about in general is the course. No question is out of off limits here.
  158. What is that muddy ist point perhaps that that
  159. thing that's on your mind that you need clarification on throw
  160. it in there and I'll get those questions answered already.
  161. That's your job. Um It's a pretty light week in regards to that.
  162. Um Beyond that. Normally what will happen.
  163. And don't forget to read chapter one and that's part of it too.
  164. And remember it's all about expert teaching and it
  165. really does set us up for this course and
  166. then by the time we get to chapter two we're going to get into the meat of it.
  167. Or we're going to talk about cognitive development,
  168. language development and theories behind it.
  169. So make sure you get this.
  170. It's gonna kind of talk about quantitative versus qualitative.
  171. Um some research, things like that assessment.
  172. So it kind of keeps things sort of straight in our in our minds.
  173. So next week the video in the video is
  174. usually typically will be about 15 minutes or less.
  175. But we always start with a little announcement.
  176. I will start with a recap of the previous week and then I will do a little small short
  177. lecture to piggyback on the book and then describe
  178. your assignments and things that you need to do.
  179. So hopefully that works for you. Um
  180. And we'll go from there.
  181. Alright again remember I'm here for you, email me that works best and um
  182. yeah, if you need anything, you know how to find me,
  183. I wish you nothing but the best and I look so forward to
  184. meeting each and every one of you have a great first week goodbye.
