  1. Okay, we're moving along with our story.
  2. Take a look.
  3. We're on Chapter four titled World Record for the worst
  4. day ever.
  5. Oh, let's see what happens.
  6. I know it seems like this was the best suspension
  7. day made in history.
  8. And to be honest, it waas at least at first.
  9. I got to punch that jerk Brandon in the face.
  10. I know I know.
  11. Not cool, but still leave school early and hang out
  12. on the track with my new coach because I was
  13. on a team now well, turned out to be a
  14. pretty cool dude.
  15. Being coach didn't go no further into my life or
  16. nothing like that, which was a good thing because I
  17. never really told nobody about my dad.
  18. Instead, Coach asked me what was my favorite?
  19. Well, my favorite basketball player, Waas LeBron, I said, like
  20. it should have been obvious.
  21. Wells. Who else?
  22. Coach said, surprised, uh, let me think.
  23. Michael Jordan, Jordan, Come on, man.
  24. Jordan's like somebody's granddaddy Jordan don't want to see LeBron
  25. On his worst day, LeBron could sick from a bad
  26. batch of cafeteria chicken drum ease and still give Jordan
  27. the business coach stood up.
  28. See That's the problem with you kids.
  29. You all don't know what a true champ is.
  30. Coach, I hate to break it to you, but LeBron
  31. is a jam.
  32. He got rankings.
  33. I said Hold up two fingers and wiggling them around.
  34. But Jordan has six now.
  35. Coach held up both his hands.
  36. All five fingers spread on his one Justice pointer finger
  37. up on his left.
  38. He wiggled them like I did.
  39. Six. Jordan's got six.
  40. Whoa, I probably should have known that, but I didn't.
  41. Dang, I knew we want a few.
  42. But X is that in the Guinness Book of World
  43. Record, the one coach s the Guinness World Record gotta
  44. be. I put it in my head to check the
  45. book when I got a chance.
  46. I don't know.
  47. Probably he was the greatest of all time.
  48. Coach shot an invisible jump shot, his tongue hanging out
  49. of his mouth.
  50. It looked ridiculous.
  51. Clearly he wasn't a ballplayer.
  52. Then I asked him about that guy.
  53. Read about who was supposed to be the fastest man
  54. alive, was saying Bolt coach knew all about him, too.
  55. He ran a 958 coach said, What's that mean?
  56. I asked, because the numbers 95 and eight mean nothing
  57. to me.
  58. They're not points or nothing like that.
  59. At least I didn't think they were.
  60. I actually wasn't even really sure if you could score
  61. points in track or not just leaving like the kind
  62. of sport you just win ribbons and medals or whatever
  63. That was his time for.
  64. The 100 meter coach pointed up the track toward the
  65. start line.
  66. He had everybody sprinting from the day before.
  67. From there, he moved his hand to the finish line
  68. to their nine seconds and 58 milliseconds.
  69. The boy is like lightning.
  70. I looked at the distance in my head, counted one
  71. Mississippi, two Mississippi, three Mississippi and pictured myself running nine
  72. seconds. Seemed like a pretty long time, but that even
  73. that is that even that fast, I said.
  74. Plus, it just seemed like 100 meters was all that
  75. wasn't all that long.
  76. I mean, I had just run it the day before
  77. in what had been had to be six or seven
  78. seconds couldn't have been more than eight.
  79. You don't think so, Coach asked, flashing a slide grand.
  80. You think you can beat that I looked at the
  81. distance again.
  82. One. Mississippi, two.
  83. Mississippi. I don't know.
  84. I shrugged.
  85. Probably this was when the best date ever went bad.
  86. Coach told me to try to run 100 meters in
  87. nine seconds and 58 milliseconds.
  88. Bolts time.
  89. He stood at the finish line with this whistle in
  90. his mouth.
  91. I rolled my pants up to my knees and mice
  92. shirt sleeves up to my shoulders, just like I had
  93. done the day before on the whistle, Coach said, holding
  94. up the stopwatch on your mark.
  95. Get set.
  96. But it I took off down the track, running as
  97. fast as I could.
  98. Legs pumping arms, probably heart pumping until I got to
  99. the finish line.
  100. Oh, coach, How old?
  101. Excitedly. I felt good, knew that I had proven my
  102. point. I bopped over to coach with my hand up,
  103. ready for the high five, but coach never lifted his
  104. hand. Not even close.
  105. He helped, not even freaking close.
  106. You ran a 12 5 and before I even responded,
  107. he barked back on line.
  108. I jog back the start coach blew the whistle.
  109. Iran. He blew the whistle.
  110. I ran again and again and again each time it
  111. came in a little slower than the last.
  112. My head started swimming, my chest burning and my legs
  113. got all gooey.
  114. Like all the running was turning my bones toe liquid
  115. or something.
  116. After the fifth try Coach L.
  117. Though 14 seconds, 14 seconds on the track, that might
  118. be, well, 14 minutes.
  119. Are you kidding me?
  120. Event over and planted my hands on my knees.
  121. My legs were shaking, but only on the inside, like
  122. my muscles were shivering.
  123. My heart was pounding as fast as my feet had
  124. pounded the track, maybe even faster.
  125. My stomach was flipping and I just knew by French
  126. fries were going to come up as mashed potatoes all
  127. over the place.
  128. Coach walked over a shadow, making the red track burgundy
  129. around me.
  130. He leaned in and said lightly, almost as if he
  131. were whispering to me back on the line.
  132. That's when I lost it.
  133. What, what, what again?
  134. I need break!
  135. I panted.
  136. I'm tired, tired, Coach squealed, and I could hear the
  137. smile in his voice.
  138. I glanced up in there.
  139. It waas big and chipped and wide, like whatever words
  140. were hiding behind those teeth he was struggling to keep
  141. in. So we let them out.
  142. You know who's really tired, son, your principal coach put
  143. his hand up homes facing me as if to stop
  144. me from even thinking about responding.
  145. Then he continued, No, no, you know, it was really
  146. tired. Your mother, she's so tired, so tired.
  147. And she's gonna be even more exhausted when she hears
  148. about your suspension.
  149. Come on, Coach Jay begged.
  150. That's messed up.
  151. Come on.
  152. Nothing, Coach said.
  153. Like every old black person says, when they don't have
  154. a good comeback, you grabbed my shoulder and stood me
  155. straight. Bending over cuts off your air, he said.
  156. We stand straight up all times.
  157. Understand? I nodded.
  158. No understanding what was happening.
  159. I was being punished.
  160. After all, this was coaches way of telling me that
  161. I better stop acting up in school.
  162. If this was what the consequences of getting sent to
  163. Mr Marshall's office, we're going to be every time.
  164. I'd rather have to call my mother now, Mr Butter
  165. than Bolt.
  166. Get back on the line.
  167. Coach made me do the sprint two or three more
  168. times before finally letting up, and the only reason I
  169. think he let me stop was because my sprint had
  170. broken down into a weird, sloppy try the tall, skinny
  171. kid Sonny had done at practice the previous day.
  172. My shirt was gone.
  173. I had peeled it off and thrown it on the
  174. field just in case the wet cotton was weighing me
  175. down or something.
  176. My legs had pretty much clocked out, but instead of
  177. let me just sit and rest, Coach told me toe
  178. walk it off, Walk it off.
  179. I asked, annoyed and confused and almost ready to cry.
  180. Yeah, just walk around the track.
  181. It will cool your body down slowly.
  182. But I didn't want my body to cool down slowly.
  183. I wanted to cool down immediately.
  184. So yeah, at this point, I had pretty much made
  185. up my mind.
  186. The track was the dumbest sport ever.
  187. I mean, you gotta move toe warm up.
  188. You gotta move to cool down.
  189. Don't make no sense.
  190. Cool down.
  191. Should be.
  192. I don't know some juice and ice or something like
  193. that. Not a walk.
  194. Once I finished the first lap, coach told me to
  195. take one more and about halfway around the second lap
  196. of me mumbling under my breath about how stupid all
  197. this waas I could see the other runners, my new
  198. teammates showing up, dropping their sports bags and water bottles
  199. and all of that on the track, some of their
  200. parents trailing behind.
  201. This is gonna be a coach was preaching to everyone
  202. as I finally made it back to the other side
  203. of the track for the second time.
  204. 10 girls and boys.
  205. Just so we're clear.
  206. This doesn't mean you still can't be cut.
  207. It means you ain't cut yet.
  208. No, I'd like to keep it this way, but that's
  209. totally up to you.
  210. Got it.
  211. Everybody nodded, including a woman with braids who looked too
  212. old to be on the team even though she was
  213. dressed in running clothes.
  214. I had first noticed her from the other side of
  215. the track and figure she was somebody's mother until she
  216. didn't sit down with the rest of the corny kids
  217. cheering squad coach Wim um, about how this was the
  218. third day of practice for the spring season and how
  219. he wanted to be sure we all knew each other,
  220. or at least to make sure all the vets knew
  221. the newbies.
  222. I was still standing back, sort of outside the circle
  223. as coach started rattling off everybody's name on the girls
  224. side For the vets we have Michelle Cherry, Brit Brat
  225. Williams, Melissa Jordan DD Gross Crystal speed.
  226. Any girl with the last name speed had to be
  227. fast. Kind of like any dude with the last name.
  228. Bolt Coach continued.
  229. Deja Bolek lin take Condra.
  230. Former Nikki McClair.
  231. He paused in motion toward the last girl in Our
  232. Newbie for the for the Girls is Cantina.
  233. But she told me a few minutes ago that she
  234. goes by Patty Jones.
  235. Everybody clap, Patty.
  236. I got high hopes for you, young lady.
  237. Let's make it happen.
  238. Then he started calling out the boys names.
  239. The vets Eric Dane, her current outlaw, Aaron Homes, Mikey
  240. Ferer, Freddy Hayes, Josh J.
  241. J. Jerome and Chris Myers.
  242. You boys better look out for our newbies.
  243. Lu Richardson, Sunny Lancaster in This was one coach turned
  244. to me and as of yesterday, this kid castle Cran
  245. ghost. I cut him off before he could even get
  246. to the Shaw wrote, Just call me Ghost Coach gave
  247. me a look.
  248. Actually, everybody gave me a look, probably because I didn't
  249. have no shirt on and my pants were rolled to
  250. my knees and my belt was yanked so tight that
  251. it made the done a bunch of around my waist
  252. like genie pants.
  253. But whatever I was going to tell them, that son
  254. coach said I was gonna tell them that, son Coach
  255. said. Then he turned back to the rest of the
  256. team. Lastly, this is your assistant coach, coach wit.
  257. Coach Wit was the woman with the braids.
  258. She had also had a chubby cheeks.
  259. And like I said, she looked too old to be
  260. on the team.
  261. But she definitely didn't look old enough to be nobody's
  262. coach. Then she pulled the whistle from her underneath her
  263. sweatshirt, so that pretty much meant that's who she waas.
  264. Give it up for your squad, coach told us, slapping
  265. his hands together.
  266. This is gonna be a great season.
  267. Everybody cheered and clapped for maybe 10 seconds before coach
  268. shut it down and told us it was time to
  269. get to work.
  270. Let's stop there, you guys.
  271. So he's that track practice.
  272. Is anyone thinking, my gosh, he hasn't jeans on and
  273. built doesn't sound like it's high tops are made for
  274. running. So I'm thinking to myself, This isn't good.
  275. What's gonna happen?
  276. I feel like there's that's some part of the story
  277. that's important So let's listen on as I go on
  278. to our next part.
