  1. Hey, guys, how's it going?
  2. Eso today?
  3. The assessment that I'm going to be speaking about is
  4. the perceived racism scale.
  5. Um, I thought this was really interesting and super relevant,
  6. just based off what's going on in the world.
  7. And I also think it's very helpful.
  8. I'll get more into that for my conclusion.
  9. But let's just start with some quick fax.
  10. So the perceived racism scale, in other words, is the
  11. PRS. That's just for short.
  12. Yeah, Um, it was it was really difficult to find,
  13. like, any sort of information on this.
  14. Um, but the article that I found quoted this, um,
  15. this assessment along with, like, 10 other ones, and I
  16. was able to find nothing other than this like a
  17. few articles.
  18. But it kept saying that the author was Rashida Atkins.
  19. But, um, I wasn't sure if it was the if
  20. it was for the PRS or if it was just
  21. for that specific article.
  22. But either way leads back to Rashida Atkins publishers is
  23. a c i n a l h.
  24. Also psych info.
  25. Also MEDLINE and also pub med.
  26. Um, the cost was very difficult again finding this, um,
  27. this assessment was so so difficult to find any information
  28. or website that just had a clear cut costs.
  29. Um, all I could find on the Web was this
  30. email of this person who goes to Duke.
  31. So if you guys wanna email that email, go ahead
  32. and find out the cost.
  33. Um, administration time I took a wild guess.
  34. I took estimate, which I believe it would probably be
  35. around like an hour.
  36. Assuming 51 questions take, like, a minute to a minute
  37. and 15 seconds on the h reflecting eso I I
  38. assume an hour, um 51 item instrument.
  39. As I said earlier, um, target population is predominantly African
  40. American adults, but it can be adapted for other minority
  41. populations. So, um, yeah, very personal.
  42. For me objectives is to understand the perceived exposure to
  43. racism. And, um, the test format is on the next
  44. slide. But before I move on, um, I wanted to
  45. read a quote from Martin Luther King.
  46. It says qihoo passively accept evil is as much involved
  47. in it as he who helps perpetrated Martin Luther King.
  48. Something to think about.
  49. So the format a ZX we all know racism is
  50. the real virus it has been for a while, but
  51. the format of the test the first section has 43
  52. items and as the respondents to rate the frequency with
  53. which they have been exposed to racist events in four
  54. domains. Job, academic, public and racist statements.
  55. Eso it's between zero and 70 being not applicable.
  56. Seven. Being several times a day.
  57. Um, I thought it was really interesting that it included
  58. racist statements separately.
  59. I feel like that could be very interrelated with job,
  60. academic, public something that I thought they could have included
  61. was like, um, leisure time.
  62. But I guess that that could fall into Publicas.
  63. Well, it's a subdivision.
  64. The second section includes eight items which require respondents to
  65. indicate the emotional appraisal of each event.
  66. E g angry, frustrated, sad, powerless, etcetera.
  67. And the third section is requires respondents to indicate coping
  68. strategies that have been used for each event, e g.
  69. Speaking up, ignoring it, etcetera.
  70. So as you guys could assume this might this this
  71. test might be a bit of like off of, of
  72. how the person who's grading this assessments biases fall into
  73. it really depends on how well they are trained so
  74. yeah, eso when talking about some sample questions, Um, one
  75. of them was because I am black.
  76. I am assigned to jobs no one else wants again.
  77. This is all perceived to racism.
  78. That's what it's measuring on.
  79. The next one, I actually, I I actually adjusted it
  80. for something that's personal for me, but I have been
  81. made to feel uncomfortable in the classroom for being Muslim.
  82. If it was a Muslim, I could have been.
  83. I've been I have been made to feel uncomfortable in
  84. the classroom for being Hispanic or for white or black,
  85. you know, fill in the blank.
  86. So very adjustable.
  87. This'll assessment.
  88. I believe I have been refused housing because I am
  89. black. This is super current.
  90. Um, I was actually speaking with my sister about, like,
  91. the real estate market and how property value, um, gets
  92. decreased or black people are less likely to get a
  93. bank loan for a house for a mortgage than other
  94. races. And yeah, it's just B s.
  95. It's ridiculous.
  96. And yeah, when I go shopping, I'm often followed because
  97. of the color of my skin.
  98. Um, you know, how are you perceiving racism?
  99. Um, this is Malcolm X praying inside of a mosque
  100. because you guys know probably know Malcolm X was a
  101. Muslim. Um believe is a Black Panther.
  102. I could be wrong on that, so don't quote me.
  103. But quote from him is I am not a racist.
  104. I'm against every form of racism and segregation, every form
  105. of discrimination.
  106. I believe in human beings and that all human beings
  107. should be respected as such regard regardless of their color.
  108. Eso going on to the next section.
  109. Um, scoring.
  110. So how is it scored?
  111. Well, the scores of the P R s frequency of
  112. exposure scale can range from 0 to 301 higher.
  113. Scores indicate more frequent perceptions of exposure to racism and
  114. lower less frequent perceptions of exposure to racism.
  115. It's a very interesting on.
  116. I think, Ah, lot of this test can be filled
  117. in by, um, I think it would be helpful for
  118. this assessment.
  119. Specifically, if you have, like a pre, um, like maybe
  120. an intake just to get to know the person, because
  121. a person in Africa whose around black people all day
  122. long and that's all they know and they haven't been
  123. around any white people, and they are the dominant, the
  124. dominant culture.
  125. And, you know, skin color would be totally different from
  126. a black person in the suburbs off Long Island or
  127. something like that.
  128. So the reliability of this eso based on all my
  129. research and it was very, uh, very, um then because
  130. I wasn't able to find much.
  131. Unfortunately, on my specific research article, they said they found
  132. adequate coefficient.
  133. Alphas, um, that show that this assessment is reliable when,
  134. um, talking about validity?
  135. Yeah. I'm sorry.
  136. Was that validity?
  137. No. Yeah.
  138. Validity when talking about validity of third reporting provided confirmation
  139. off the accuracy of the factor analysis performed and thereby
  140. provides additional sound evidence of the validity of these instruments
  141. for use and African American adults and adolescents, respectively.
  142. So, as I said, it was hard to even find
  143. a website for this assessment.
  144. But, um, all in all the places that I did
  145. find, the few articles I did find were, um we're
  146. we're leaving to saying that it is pretty pretty on
  147. point. So, in conclusion, what do I think about this
  148. assessment? Um, I think this assessment is very good.
  149. I think it would be very helpful again.
  150. I wasn't able to get the whole assessment.
  151. I couldn't even find the price, unfortunately, but I think
  152. assessments like this are very good.
  153. And it made me start thinking about about administering these
  154. earlier. Um, what if we did these assessments in elementary
  155. school? How much more effective would it be?
  156. How much more people would we catch?
  157. How many?
  158. How many more Children would we would we would we
  159. catch them before they're adults?
  160. And, you know, actually, in positions of power where they
  161. were, they decline a mortgage loan or a bank loan
  162. for a black couple who we're just getting declined or
  163. or decreasing their property value just because of the color
  164. of their skin.
  165. Um, I believe I think I could be wrong, but
  166. I think this all starts early.
  167. And if we were to give these assessments early in
  168. elementary school, um, you know, it would be all the
  169. more effective, Um, some of these pictures that I found
  170. I just Google Jim Crow, Jim Crow, high resolution, and
  171. I found that this I mean, this is actually really
  172. things. I mean, how crazy is that?
  173. We want white tenants in our white community.
  174. Um, unfortunately, I mean, yeah, this is still this.
  175. This still goes on today, um, Imperial Imperial Laundry Company.
  176. We wash for white people only, you know, just makes
  177. me think about if I were in America and during
  178. the time of Jim Crow, you know, being treated like,
  179. like, less than a human being.
  180. Um, yeah.
  181. It's just I think this assessment is helpful for preventing
  182. history, repeating itself the earlier the better.
  183. I think so.
  184. All right, well, thank you so much.
