00:00 - 00:04
my culminating lab, I wanted to look at overall addressing hazards,
00:04 - 00:06
which was the main theme that I got from
00:06 - 00:09
this class in the purpose of environmental health sciences.
00:09 - 00:12
Um such a limit our exposure and risk from hazards.
00:12 - 00:14
There are many different points of interventions
00:14 - 00:17
um and types of interventions as well as other
00:17 - 00:21
external factors that determine which interventions we should choose.
00:21 - 00:24
So looking at the points of interventions early on in the course,
00:24 - 00:29
we looked at really these five points in the original environmental health
00:30 - 00:33
model, we have the source hazards or exposure,
00:33 - 00:36
media the recipient exposure route and then ultimately
00:36 - 00:38
the health effect that we're trying to avoid.
00:39 - 00:41
The most interesting thing I found was when
00:41 - 00:43
we were discussing the one health approach,
00:43 - 00:45
we learned that recipients can include humans,
00:45 - 00:47
animals and plants and they're all
00:47 - 00:51
differently affected based on various characteristics.
00:51 - 00:52
Yeah.
00:52 - 00:54
In addition there are different types of interventions
00:54 - 00:58
that we learned about definitely new technologies and
00:58 - 01:00
engineering or a big focus of this class
01:00 - 01:03
and really what's needed in order to implement
01:03 - 01:05
um a lot of um
01:05 - 01:06
new practices,
01:06 - 01:10
also additional resources could just include staff that we need um
01:10 - 01:16
to have those regular ongoing investment in basic public health services,
01:16 - 01:19
um then definitely treatments to address, you know,
01:19 - 01:22
the health effects if if we do get to a disease state.
01:22 - 01:26
And then what I found really interesting was the policy change concepts,
01:26 - 01:27
seeing how successful some of these
01:28 - 01:30
have been in the past and really how that can be have
01:30 - 01:35
a large impact on a large scale if implemented and enforced correctly.
01:36 - 01:38
And then lastly, um
01:39 - 01:40
based on kind of what we choose in the
01:40 - 01:42
point of intervention or the type of intervention.
01:42 - 01:45
There's also these other factors that we have to consider, um,
01:45 - 01:48
with a system thinking approach to think, big picture
01:48 - 01:53
and what we decide ultimately depends on what's available, the cost,
01:53 - 01:56
how much it will really impact and what the equity will look like.
01:56 - 01:59
And then, of course, the political will required.
