03:45 - 06:32
shit. Uh, okay, Lord, please help me get this done.
07:13 - 07:16
The Tol class has been a journey filled with exploration
07:17 - 07:17
and learning.
07:18 - 07:21
In fact, this attorney, that will be ongoing as I
07:21 - 07:25
work to continue increasing my knowledge and awareness of online
07:25 - 07:25
learning capabilities.
07:27 - 07:28
I hope I never stop learning.
07:35 - 07:37
Let me begin by sharing my top three takeaways from
07:38 - 07:38
this experience.
07:41 - 07:44
First is really embracing.
07:47 - 07:50
First is really embracing the importance of developing a formal
07:51 - 07:53
communication plan for my online students.
07:54 - 07:55
It's not enough to just have a plan.
07:56 - 07:59
However, Were the plan to be effective, it must be
08:00 - 08:01
communicated and implemented.
08:02 - 08:06
Letting students know how I will be communicating with them
08:06 - 08:08
throughout the semester is especially important.
08:09 - 08:14
Likewise, setting my expectations for how they should communicate with
08:14 - 08:17
their peers and with me is equally important.
08:20 - 08:23
My second take away involves the many canvas tools at
08:23 - 08:25
our disposal for teaching online.
08:26 - 08:29
There are many great tools available in the campus learning
08:29 - 08:36
management system, including discussions, collaborations, conferences, chat and announcements just
08:36 - 08:40
to name a few courses can design can be designed.
08:42 - 08:45
Courses can be designed using a few or many of
08:45 - 08:49
the tools available in canvas as well as many tools
08:49 - 08:50
available outside of canvas.
08:51 - 08:54
But just because we can use as many tools as
08:54 - 08:56
we like doesn't mean we should.
08:58 - 09:00
I think we should be selectable you've been.
09:02 - 09:04
I think we should be selective and purposeful in deciding
09:05 - 09:07
which tools of modalities to use.
09:07 - 09:10
Since using too many may make our course seem chaotic
09:11 - 09:11
and disorganized.
09:12 - 09:16
Instead of creating a fun and engaging course, using too
09:16 - 09:21
many tools may overwhelm students and reduce their level of
09:21 - 09:22
engagement in the course.
09:23 - 09:26
My philosophy is the more fun and engaging I can
09:26 - 09:29
make my course, the more memorable the course becomes.
09:30 - 09:32
Which, by the way, is my primary objective.
09:34 - 09:37
The last take away I want to discuss is that
09:37 - 09:41
I now know it's possible to have my online students
09:41 - 09:42
participate in a team project.
09:44 - 09:45
I love team projects.
09:46 - 09:49
There is no guarantee that my health care administration students
09:49 - 09:53
will all work in a hospital, doctors, office, clinic, nursing
09:53 - 09:57
home or other centralized healthcare setting they made by themselves
09:58 - 10:01
working for a large insurance company or a decentralized organization
10:02 - 10:06
where the workforce is distributed among multiple towns, regions, states
10:07 - 10:07
or even countries.
10:09 - 10:12
There may be situations like the current pandemic, where even
10:12 - 10:17
local organizations are requiring requiring employees whose jobs enable them
10:17 - 10:18
to work from home.
10:19 - 10:19
Do so.
10:20 - 10:24
Under those circumstances, distributed workforce is need to be able
10:24 - 10:27
to work remotely together to get things done and meet
10:27 - 10:31
deadlines. My current day job is designing and developing training
10:32 - 10:34
for the consumer banking division of J.
10:34 - 10:35
P. Morgan Chase.
10:36 - 10:40
Colleagues on my team are located across the country, some
10:40 - 10:41
as far away as California.
10:42 - 10:46
It is interesting that academia is becoming more widely accepting
10:47 - 10:47
of distance learning.
10:51 - 10:53
Now I'd like to spend some time discussing some challenges
10:54 - 10:57
I see with online learning and some solutions I think
10:57 - 11:01
might help mitigate those challenges were not considered just considering
11:02 - 11:05
moving one week's worth, of course, content into an online
11:06 - 11:12
experience. But an entire semester a semester is a significant
11:12 - 11:14
amount of time to conduct learning online.
11:14 - 11:19
So I see keeping students interest levels high as a
11:19 - 11:20
significant challenge.
11:21 - 11:24
One way to address the challenges to maintain regular communication
11:25 - 11:29
with students, which is why having a well articulated communication
11:29 - 11:32
plan and faithfully executing that plan is essential.
11:33 - 11:36
Another way to keep students engaged is by demonstrating my
11:37 - 11:41
enthusiasm for them as individuals as well as for the
11:41 - 11:43
health care human resource is subject, I teach.
11:44 - 11:47
One compliment I consistently received for my students has been
11:48 - 11:50
that the stories I tell for my own healthcare experience
11:51 - 11:56
helps them understand HR concept much more than they otherwise
11:56 - 12:00
would. Lastly, I want to be selective about the canvas
12:00 - 12:04
tools I use, thereby reducing the chance of overwhelming my
12:04 - 12:07
students, especially those who have never before taken an online
12:08 - 12:11
class. I want to stretch my students, not break them.
12:12 - 12:13
More enjoyable.
12:13 - 12:17
I can make the experience, the more likely they will
12:17 - 12:19
retain what they've learned for a longer period of time.
12:22 - 12:25
The second challenge I'd like to discuss is managing the
12:25 - 12:27
team video projects I will be assigning.
12:28 - 12:31
A key component of this involves something that has been
12:31 - 12:34
pivotal throughout the tol course, namely communication.
12:36 - 12:39
Just as it's important that I maintain regular communication with
12:40 - 12:44
individual students, it's also essential that I maintain regular communication
12:44 - 12:46
with the teams about the team project.
12:48 - 12:50
This is more than the detailed discussion of the team
12:50 - 12:51
project of my course syllabus.
12:52 - 12:57
It also includes some short videos that discuss each of
12:57 - 12:59
the various project, deliver bles in detail.
13:00 - 13:03
This helps address the different learning styles of the class
13:03 - 13:05
as well as the individual teams.
13:06 - 13:09
Some folks learn best by reading others by watching or
13:09 - 13:10
listening to videos.
13:11 - 13:14
Speaking of videos, since the main delivery herbal of the
13:14 - 13:17
team project will be a video, I think it's important
13:18 - 13:21
that I demonstrate my own use of videos throughout this
13:21 - 13:25
semester. Modeling my own use of the technology I'm expecting
13:25 - 13:28
students to deliver will make it less daunting to them
13:28 - 13:32
and hopefully alleviate any hesitation they may have with video
13:33 - 13:43
technology. Last but not least, I have one question, one
13:43 - 13:50
question. For one or many of last but not least,
13:51 - 13:53
I have a question for one or more of my
13:53 - 13:59
colleagues, namely, what are one or two innovative ways to
13:59 - 14:02
use canvas tools that have not been addressed in this
14:02 - 14:08
class? I'm looking forward to hearing your ideas.
14:09 - 14:10
It's been a fun and enlightening class.
14:11 - 14:14
Thanks so much for watching my video take care and
14:15 - 14:15
stay safe
