00:02 - 00:05
my lesson today is going to be on ergonomics
00:05 - 00:07
um a little bit about my classroom,
00:07 - 00:12
I am a cosmetology instructor and a secondary education setting
00:12 - 00:14
as a cosmetology instructor.
00:14 - 00:17
It is a post secondary curriculum that my students use.
00:17 - 00:20
So it makes a little bit more difficult to understand.
00:20 - 00:23
Sometimes I have my students do a lot of
00:23 - 00:26
guided reading throughout theory lessons just to make sure that
00:26 - 00:28
we're all on the same page and that they're
00:28 - 00:31
getting everything that they need to out of the curriculum
00:31 - 00:32
for this lesson.
00:32 - 00:36
I've chosen the topic of ergonomics which is extremely important for my students to
00:36 - 00:43
learn as they will be practicing daily habits and duties in a salon setting.
00:43 - 00:45
That can be very difficult on your body.
00:46 - 00:47
It's important for the students to have a
00:47 - 00:49
little bit of background before this lesson.
00:49 - 00:54
They need to make sure that they understand the daily demands of being a
00:54 - 00:59
salon professional and they need to make sure that they know exactly how to
00:59 - 01:02
take care of their bodies to make sure that they're practicing
01:02 - 01:06
proper ergonomics so that they don't have long term side effects of
01:07 - 01:08
um
01:08 - 01:11
pain or suffering from being on your feet for long hours.
01:12 - 01:18
The student ages that this lesson is going to work with is 15-16 year olds.
01:18 - 01:20
They're at 1/10 grade academic level and
01:20 - 01:24
their current cosmetology cosmetology level is one,
01:24 - 01:28
their first year students, they've got a preview of the curriculum,
01:28 - 01:30
they're just starting into the program.
01:30 - 01:32
We're learning a little bit about health
01:32 - 01:35
body and mind to start out professional development
01:35 - 01:39
and to make sure that they're aware of all of the demands of the industry.
01:39 - 01:43
The students that I'm going to focus on as english language learners
01:43 - 01:46
R. M. B. Which is a 10th grade student.
01:46 - 01:50
She's from Germany she's developing um phases
01:50 - 01:53
of learning throughout the English language.
01:53 - 01:56
She still tends to feel uncomfortable when she's
01:56 - 01:58
working in group settings and with other students.
01:58 - 02:00
But I have incorporated a group
02:01 - 02:04
a little bit of group work with this lesson to make sure that we pull
02:04 - 02:09
her out of her comfort zone just a little bit while she is learning a
02:09 - 02:12
little bit easier section of the curriculum
02:12 - 02:14
so that she can get more comfortable working
02:14 - 02:19
with others as as a salon professional is a very demanding part of our job.
02:20 - 02:25
My second learner that I'm going to work with today is E. S.
02:25 - 02:30
She's also 1/10 grade student and also from Germany however she does present with A.
02:30 - 02:35
D. H. D. This makes it difficult for her to stay on task at times.
02:35 - 02:39
And she often works better if she's paired with a stronger partner.
02:40 - 02:45
She's also a german language learning student and she
02:45 - 02:48
prefers a partner that is more familiar with her
02:48 - 02:52
language and she's not very strong with her english yet
02:54 - 02:55
while these students
02:56 - 02:59
while these students work on
03:00 - 03:03
their lesson today I will make sure that I am
03:03 - 03:06
checking on them and guiding them throughout the guided
03:06 - 03:09
reading as I will without each other students.
03:10 - 03:15
As we continue in my explanation we are going to talk about my strategy rationale,
03:15 - 03:17
I've created two different work sheeps
03:18 - 03:22
worksheets to help my students as they continue the guided reading
03:23 - 03:24
portion of the lesson.
03:25 - 03:27
The first thing that they're going to do is they're going to
03:27 - 03:32
preview a key term concept check and complete that throughout the reading.
03:33 - 03:34
I will show you
03:35 - 03:36
on the next slide
03:37 - 03:39
examples of this and go into a little bit
03:39 - 03:42
more depth about how they're going to use them.
03:42 - 03:44
The second worksheet is a K. W. L.
03:44 - 03:47
Worksheet which allows the students to already
03:47 - 03:48
put what they know about ergonomics,
03:48 - 03:50
what they want to know about ergonomics.
03:50 - 03:52
And then at the end of the lesson they're
03:52 - 03:54
going to tell me what they learned about ergonomics.
03:55 - 03:57
I think that it's important to have guided reading
03:57 - 04:01
strategies used in many of my theory lessons to make
04:01 - 04:03
sure that all of the students are getting as
04:03 - 04:06
much as they possibly can out of my theory lessons
04:06 - 04:10
in order to check on them as they work through this and assess them properly.
04:10 - 04:13
I do make sure that we are all working through
04:13 - 04:16
it at the same time giving those who may need a
04:16 - 04:19
little bit of extra time that time while others kind
04:19 - 04:22
of preview through what the next step is going to be
04:26 - 04:29
on the next slide. I'm going to show you some examples.
04:29 - 04:32
My first example is going to be the ergonomics
04:32 - 04:36
key terms concept checks and definitions on this page.
04:36 - 04:38
it has two columns,
04:38 - 04:43
the left hand side of the page has blank spots as well as the right hand side.
04:43 - 04:45
What the students are going to do before the lesson
04:45 - 04:47
is take a look at the left hand side,
04:48 - 04:51
they're going to read the word and they're going to properly mark
04:52 - 04:56
according to their knowledge on this word, to record prior knowledge.
04:56 - 04:58
So for the first one, ergonomics,
04:58 - 05:02
the students will either put a zero if they've never ever heard the word before and
05:02 - 05:06
then they'll put a plus sign if they've heard it but can't explain it to anybody.
05:06 - 05:08
And then they'll put a check mark if they've
05:08 - 05:10
heard the word and can explain it to somebody.
05:11 - 05:13
The students after they read all of these
05:13 - 05:15
words will go down through and mark them appropriately
05:16 - 05:17
throughout the lesson.
05:17 - 05:20
They're going to then record the definition for each word as
05:20 - 05:24
we stop for the guided reading and make sure that they
05:25 - 05:26
have the proper
05:27 - 05:28
definition.
05:28 - 05:30
So we'll start with the reading, I'll read some,
05:30 - 05:33
some of the students would read some if I were in a classroom
05:34 - 05:40
if they wanted to and then as you see a bold term or an italicized term,
05:40 - 05:40
we're gonna stop,
05:40 - 05:42
we're going to discuss a little bit farther and make
05:42 - 05:46
sure that everybody's recording this in their definition of notes
05:47 - 05:50
and then after the lesson is done and the guiding reading
05:50 - 05:54
is the guided reading portion of the lesson is done,
05:54 - 05:56
they're going to go back onto this first sheet and they're going
05:56 - 05:59
to look at it and then they're going to mark them again
05:59 - 06:03
once again same directions zero if you've never heard the word before,
06:03 - 06:07
which at this point nobody should have a zero on the right hand column.
06:07 - 06:10
Um a plus sign if you've heard the word before,
06:10 - 06:12
but can't explain it to anybody and then a check mark,
06:12 - 06:15
if you've heard the word before and can explain it to somebody.
06:16 - 06:19
So the goal for this is to have check marks all on the right hand side column,
06:19 - 06:22
but as we know, not everybody learns the same.
06:22 - 06:26
So I want to make sure that as the students fill this out,
06:26 - 06:29
I'm walking around assessing them and seeing what needs to
06:29 - 06:34
be maybe discussed more in depth for this section.
06:34 - 06:37
The other worksheet that I have is the K. W. L.
06:37 - 06:39
The first column they're gonna go in and they're going
06:39 - 06:41
to write down what they already know about ergonomics.
06:41 - 06:45
Some students may have talked about this in physical science or in
06:45 - 06:48
another class and they may know a lot about ergonomics already.
06:49 - 06:51
Um Other students may not know anything.
06:51 - 06:54
So this gives us an opportunity to record prior knowledge.
06:55 - 06:57
Then we're going to write down what we want to know about ergonomics.
06:57 - 07:00
So we've already looked at the concept check and we
07:00 - 07:02
already know some of these words and you know,
07:02 - 07:04
maybe we're familiar with carpal tunnel syndrome.
07:05 - 07:08
And so the students go in and they're going to
07:08 - 07:13
um write down what they may want to get out of this lesson and then at the
07:13 - 07:15
end of the guided reading after they've maybe
07:15 - 07:18
seen some of their questions and you know,
07:18 - 07:20
connected more of the dots with the words
07:20 - 07:25
that are on the concept check and what they wrote in the one section of the K. W. L.
07:25 - 07:30
Worksheet, then they're going to go and write in what they've learned in the lesson.
07:30 - 07:33
So this gives us time to kind of write down, okay,
07:33 - 07:36
I learned a B and C about ergonomics and then what we
07:36 - 07:39
can do is we can all discuss maybe one thing on our
07:39 - 07:45
learn columns so that the students can have a little bit of a review and discuss
07:45 - 07:47
maybe one of them learned
07:47 - 07:49
something that another one didn't
07:52 - 07:55
and then we're going to talk about lesson objectives.
07:55 - 07:59
So my objective for this lesson is that with the help, the help of the instructors,
07:59 - 08:02
the students going to list multiple ways that a
08:02 - 08:06
stylist may or may not be practicing ergonomics in
08:06 - 08:08
a salon professional setting.
08:08 - 08:13
They're going to do this as an exit slip with 100% completion with a partner.
08:13 - 08:15
The partner works very important to me as it's going
08:15 - 08:18
to touch on my language objective of as well of
08:18 - 08:22
having the English language learners paired off with somebody so
08:22 - 08:26
that we know that they are comfortable in their answers,
08:26 - 08:31
maybe I'm an english language learner that doesn't write great in english.
08:31 - 08:35
So they're going to have their partner help them with their writing or if
08:35 - 08:40
they need help speaking in english they're able to have me assist them and
08:40 - 08:46
their partner that's german learning to make sure that we're all on the same
08:46 - 08:49
page and that they're getting everything that they need to out of this lesson.
08:51 - 08:57
And then I have my reference page. So my references are a couple of things. I have a
08:58 - 09:00
um what is guided reading
09:01 - 09:05
website that I found very interesting because it talks about how guided reading can
09:05 - 09:08
be powerful in the instructional setting for
09:08 - 09:11
many different ages and many different curriculums.
09:11 - 09:15
And then I also referenced the max teaching book that I
09:15 - 09:19
have learned to use the concept check from in the K.
09:19 - 09:20
W. L. Sheet.
09:21 - 09:25
These are two strategies that I use a lot in my program for guided reading.
09:25 - 09:29
And they also allow me to follow the max teaching guidelines to
09:29 - 09:34
make sure that my students are previewing and getting before the lesson knowledge
09:34 - 09:39
and then they're doing what's in the middle of the lesson, what are we learning,
09:39 - 09:40
what are we working on?
09:40 - 09:43
So during the lesson and then we're going to
09:43 - 09:45
talk about what we learned after the lesson.
09:45 - 09:50
So I think it's very important to incorporate the max teaching strategies into
09:50 - 09:51
my lesson as well
