  1. Hello, everybody, thank you for being here.
  2. I hope everybody's having a great day.
  3. I would like to start this out by expressing a
  4. bit of gratitude.
  5. Thank you for allowing me to not only conduct and
  6. present the research that I have, but also like to
  7. say thank you and allowing me to be a part
  8. of our expansion into Yemen.
  9. This thing's research was over the societal differences between the
  10. United States and Yemen.
  11. I know it may seem a bit trivial, but I
  12. can assure you that failure to adhere to societal norms
  13. will be, ah, huge barrier to success.
  14. I did grow up in a military family.
  15. I've seen firsthand how things are done differently around the
  16. world. For instance, I lived in Japan, and one of
  17. the bigger differences between here and there is when you
  18. go to somebody's house.
  19. If you're invited, you're expected to take your shoes off
  20. before coming inside.
  21. Now, failure to do this is seen as very rude.
  22. Um, some would say as rude as slap in the
  23. host directly in the face.
  24. I can assure you, once you've done that, there is
  25. no joke.
  26. You can tell there's no dish you can cook.
  27. That's good enough to overcome the rude and obscene acts
  28. you've committed.
  29. Chances are you're going to be remembered for being rude,
  30. and you might not even be invited back.
  31. But I would like to keep us from slapping our
  32. host in the face.
  33. So there are a few things that I would like
  34. to address.
  35. Yemen is a small country of about 30 million people.
  36. However, more than 99% of the people are of Muslim
  37. faith. I know we do have people that follow Islam.
  38. Here in America, however, it's a bit different.
  39. Yemen, because almost everybody follows these more strict set of
  40. rules and societal norms are a bit more dictated by
  41. this, um, T notes on this are how you greet
  42. people. Now I know that here in America, we kind
  43. of do things similar.
  44. If you greet somebody, you know a good handshake.
  45. Nice eye contact is customary.
  46. However, gender is a bit different.
  47. Their women are are viewed a little bit different than
  48. we view women here in America a little behind the
  49. times. But we do have to remember we are the
  50. guests now to keep it a bit short and sweet.
  51. I'll keep the perspective as a man, interacting just just
  52. to keep things from going over too far.
  53. If you're gonna meet another guy a nice, gentle handshake.
  54. Um, try not to fall for the squeezing very hard,
  55. like a lot of people do here in America.
  56. I know that some people do view the strength of
  57. a handshake as a test of somebody's manhood.
  58. A little different.
  59. Yemen. You know, a nice, gentle handshake works great, engaging
  60. great eye contact, and you know the customary greetings air.
  61. Okay. Hello.
  62. How are you?
  63. How was your day?
  64. Please, You're great.
  65. However, if you're meeting a woman, handshakes, hugs, they're not
  66. the same.
  67. You're not to shake hands with a woman.
  68. If you do accidentally try and shake hands with a
  69. woman, chances are she's either going to say no.
  70. Or she may have been placed her hand over a
  71. chest like this as a way of saying no, thank
  72. you. This is not to be seen as a rude,
  73. um, disagreement with trying to meet you.
  74. It's more of the fact that in in Yemen, the
  75. culture of women is that shaking hands with the man
  76. is very obscene and it's actually prohibited.
  77. So just keep that in mind, you know, nice handshake
  78. for meeting a guy.
  79. If you meet a woman, you know, say hello.
  80. She may even be a bit standoffish, But just understand
  81. that women do play a different role in society in
  82. Yemen. Um, now here in America, we do enjoy our
  83. weekends. Everybody looks for the weekend in my opinion, Saturday,
  84. Sunday comes around, and that is, that is what we
  85. live for in Yemen.
  86. The weekend is scheduled bit differently.
  87. Traditionally, the Islamic weekend is a Thursday Friday weekend.
  88. Yemen did follow this up until about 2012, and they
  89. ended up shifting to a Friday Saturday weekend.
  90. This was in response to following most of their trading
  91. partners around them.
  92. Uh, there was a set of problems with the Thursday
  93. Friday, Um, when you're trading with company with companies that
  94. have weekends much like us, you know, if you're off
  95. on Thursday and Friday, they're off on Saturday and Sunday.
  96. You're missing out on four days communication.
  97. So as a way to mitigate this, they shifted it
  98. to a Friday Saturday weekend to kind of meet in
  99. the middle Now this was met with a lot of
  100. opposition. You know, there's a lot of people who do
  101. not agree with this, um they see it as rude
  102. or or against their beliefs to share a day of
  103. rest with the people that are Jewish.
  104. Um, one of the things that I would suggest is
  105. transitioning to a four day work week, um, Sunday to
  106. Wednesday for four days a week, 10 hour days.
  107. This is a kind of fit directly in between the,
  108. you know, the traditional Islamic holiday and the people who
  109. want to follow the weekends of Saturday and Sunday in
  110. Yemen following along with the Islamic schedule, There is an
  111. important month to keep in mind.
  112. Uh, Islamic people do celebrate or observe the holy month
  113. of Ramadan.
  114. This is a month long observation toe where people are
  115. fasting during the daylight.
  116. You know they're encouraged.
  117. Thio do more reading of their faith, more practicing their
  118. faith as well as engaging.
  119. You know, more community efforts.
  120. With this does come a bit of barriers now it
  121. doesn't follow the same month every year, For instance, this
  122. year was April 22nd toe.
  123. May 22nd um it is 30 29 to 30 days
  124. long, but however, every year it's just by 10 days
  125. because it does follow lunar calendar.
  126. So for 2021 it will begin on April 12 2022.
  127. It will begin on April 2nd, and so on and
  128. so forth.
  129. Um, during this month, um, something to note is the
  130. levels of production are gonna be going way down.
  131. Uh, everybody knows that if you haven't eaten in a
  132. while, chances are you're not motivated to do much.
  133. You may even be crabby.
  134. Eso This is definitely something we need to address.
  135. Uh, most companies do push any important meetings or deadlines
  136. off for the month following or the month before because
  137. it's been observed study that production has been decreased during
  138. this month from his little a CE, 35% to 50%.
  139. So we definitely will want to schedule any important dates,
  140. you know, away from this month.
  141. You know, even during the month kind of limit the
  142. responsibility, our goals.
  143. Because most people are gonna work less hours.
  144. They're gonna be a bit more tired, less motivated.
  145. It's just gonna be something that will not be good
  146. for us to keep up with if the rest of
  147. the country is is not following, you know?
  148. And as I said, you know, we'd like Thio adhere
  149. to their societal norms.
  150. This this is a big one for them.
  151. Oh, you know, if we ignore this or any of
  152. the other societal norms, chances are we're not gonna have
  153. people that want to do business with us there.
  154. They're not gonna want Thio, um, interact with us because
  155. we're gonna be seeing this route People on.
  156. I don't know why you guys, but I try and
  157. stay away as much as I can.
  158. So, in closing, I would like to just reiterate the
  159. points, uh, with interacting with people.
  160. Just keep in mind if you meet a guy, it's
  161. okay to engaged in the way you would hear America
  162. way. Definitely need to look into adjusting our schedule Thio
  163. for 10, maybe work week, Saturday or Wednesday.
  164. We could do Saturday and Thursday would like, but I
  165. just received a little bit more problems going back route
  166. than just go ahead bet and sticking with Saturday toe
  167. Wednesday. Schedule A ZX well as adjusting our dates to
  168. the line with, uh, it's something we could predict and
  169. it's definitely something that way.
  170. Should definitely adjust way would like to keep from slapping
  171. our in the face.
  172. So I hope that we could keep us in mind
  173. as we continue forward.
  174. Other than that, most of the society most of the
  175. same and we should have no problem our transition.
  176. I'm very excited and I hope everyone else is as
  177. well, thank you.
