  1. Yeah, Hi, my name is Christopher solo and today I
  2. will be discussing the reason why we should donate to
  3. the cause for the fight for $15 as minimum wage.
  4. Now I find this very important to me and I
  5. think this will be important to you whether or not
  6. you are currently working at a job that is minimum
  7. wage or whether you know somebody who will eventually work
  8. at a job, who has minimum wage.
  9. This one policy affects how much money we have for
  10. our kids, how much money we can spend on ourselves,
  11. that doesn't involve rent, that doesn't involve certain things that
  12. we need to pay for.
  13. You know, we have to enjoy life.
  14. So this is something that's extremely important to everyone.
  15. It should be important to everybody.
  16. So why is the minimum wage so important?
  17. I kind of just went over why it was so
  18. important. Um There is a lot of things that people
  19. tend to think of when they think of the minimum
  20. wage, they think of teenagers, they think of people who
  21. are just starting into the business and I think if
  22. anything we need to dispel or at least take a
  23. good hard look at who's actually working in minimum wage
  24. jobs. Yeah, So there was a study in the 90s,
  25. it was published by Madeline Zevon A.
  26. Dick and she found that teenagers who do ended up,
  27. they have actually worked, obviously they are part of the
  28. they are part of the minimum wage workforce that increasing
  29. the minimum wage actually did not hamper, um did not
  30. hamper the ability for businesses to pay their workers a
  31. living minimum wage, but when it did find that the
  32. actual amount of hours would decrease by a tiny bit
  33. for the employees.
  34. This is actually something that we all like to describe
  35. as the effect of, okay, if you raise the minimum
  36. wage, you will be in effect making me have the
  37. same amount of money because I won't work the same
  38. hours. It was not the great effect though, that it
  39. is distributed out to be, this is um, found that
  40. this is actually not true and we'll see in the
  41. next slide.
  42. So, another example, if we take a look outside of
  43. the United States, there was a study conducted by some
  44. Miranda Penta and she did a study in Romania and
  45. in Romania, if you, y'all didn't know, Romania is a
  46. low wage, low labor skill workforce.
  47. A lot of the reason why they're competitive in the
  48. marketplace in the world is because they have the ability
  49. to pay their workers a lower wage so that they
  50. can make have businesses come and use their labor to
  51. make more money off of them.
  52. So it was thought that because Romania would actually increase
  53. and they actually increase a lot of their minimum wage
  54. is increased it to an extraordinary amount.
  55. Considering how much we actually increase it over here versus
  56. other countries as well.
  57. It was thought that this would actually make the workforce
  58. shrink because they couldn't actually pay for the amount of
  59. workers. And it's actually not the case.
  60. She found that in in the she found that the
  61. way that the workers actually didn't.
  62. The way that the workers had the ability to work
  63. the amount of say amount of hours and the same
  64. amount of time and still earn a better wage was
  65. not really affected by the increase in the minimum wage.
  66. And so even though in the United States, some places
  67. I would say like Georgia And like Alabama there are
  68. places where their minimum wage increase to 15 would be
  69. juristic. In other places like Arizona it would only be
  70. $3 more because we have a minimum wage of $12.
  71. Yeah. Um M.
  72. I. T.
  73. Has a really great living wage calculator and actually calculates
  74. how much each state does have her further minimum wage
  75. per state.
  76. It also calculates the poverty wage in the state how
  77. much you would need to earn to consider yourself in
  78. poverty and how much money you would earn to be
  79. considering yourself having a living wage and how much the
  80. actual minimum wages.
  81. This is extremely eye opening at the end of the
  82. day their minimum wage.
  83. This basically paints a stark picture of the living wage
  84. versus what we actually all work for when we do
  85. work the minimum wage.
  86. And this is something close to me because I do
  87. work at a minimum wage job and this affects me
  88. and so many other people.
  89. Yeah, the ability for people to earn money and save
  90. is greatly hampered by this.
  91. The last time that the minimum wage was raised was
  92. in the early two thousands and right now sits at
  93. 7 25 an hour, which nowhere in the country can
  94. you actually get an apartment or a house and have
  95. that much money and you work 40 Hours a week?
  96. 7 25 doesn't earn you that much in the ability
  97. to actually um they have to actually be able to
  98. live and to thrive in America, which is the whole
  99. point of the promise of America.
  100. And I think in the picture Roddick Spirit, this is
  101. something that we should all think about And it's something
  102. that I definitely hope that you guys donate to the
  103. fight for 15 which is actively fighting and lobbying Congress
  104. to do this one thing.
  105. Thank you.
