00:01 - 00:07
So for my Hamlet topic I chose Overcoming grief on this theme is seen
00:07 - 00:11
a lot throughout this play and it's also
00:11 - 00:12
um
00:12 - 00:16
Regarding lots of people. So I used to songs,
00:16 - 00:18
two movies and a TV show.
00:19 - 00:21
First song is pulled me under.
00:21 - 00:26
Um This one isn't actually inspired by Shakespeare's Hamlet and
00:26 - 00:29
it kind of just explores Hamlet conflicting between the revenge.
00:29 - 00:32
He sings on his uncle for killing his father,
00:32 - 00:36
but also the overwhelming grief he has which is causing him to contemplate suicide.
00:38 - 00:40
So the Hamlet connection in this.
00:40 - 00:42
So I have a quote from Hamlet,
00:42 - 00:47
it says to take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing end them.
00:47 - 00:52
Which is basically discussing how he is wondering
00:52 - 00:54
whether it's worth to continue to put up with
00:54 - 00:58
what life is throwing at him or if he's better off spending things once and for all.
00:59 - 01:03
And then the quote from the song I decided to pop in
01:03 - 01:07
because they are directly related as the song is based off Hamlet.
01:08 - 01:11
So I said if not today nor yet tomorrow then some other day.
01:11 - 01:15
So this is referring to when Hamlet is contemplating life,
01:15 - 01:19
but as well as when he's being poisoned because he knows he
01:19 - 01:22
could die at any time but justifies his fight as he did
01:23 - 01:24
it all for the love of his father.
01:26 - 01:29
I related this back to overcoming grief so brief can
01:29 - 01:32
be felt in five stages two of which are anger depression
01:33 - 01:37
in which Hamlet can be openly seen expressing although he contemplates his life,
01:37 - 01:41
that stage passes and when the anger sets in he does relate
01:41 - 01:44
it back to all the time in the name of his father.
01:44 - 01:48
So he's doing everything for his dad. Although he is feeling
01:48 - 01:52
the grief and he is depressed and he's angry about what happened,
01:53 - 01:55
he's living his life for his father.
01:56 - 02:00
The next topic I chose is another song I'll Be Missing You.
02:01 - 02:04
Um This song is actually in Remembrance to a
02:04 - 02:07
murder of one of the artists close friends.
02:07 - 02:08
So
02:08 - 02:14
this song is created as a piece. It's almost like closure for Pdt as he feels.
02:14 - 02:16
This is a way to talk to his late friend
02:16 - 02:18
and express his emotions and grief for his death.
02:18 - 02:20
But throughout song.
02:20 - 02:24
So um he actually thinks he feels as though he's
02:24 - 02:27
talking to his friend when he can express these emotions.
02:28 - 02:30
So how how this relates to Hamlet.
02:30 - 02:35
Hamlet expresses his emotion to his late father by speaking to the ghost of him.
02:35 - 02:40
And although many people may be gone, you can always express feelings in many ways.
02:40 - 02:44
And coping with these kinds of skills is important to help get out of the past.
02:45 - 02:49
So a quote from Hamlet Revenge is foul and most unnatural murder.
02:50 - 02:54
So this is kind of how both perspectives are grieving a murder.
02:54 - 02:56
But there is a relation between the grief
02:56 - 02:59
they are experiencing as the situation is similar.
03:00 - 03:04
So using your voice to express grief is very important to prevent
03:04 - 03:08
the depression phase as if you bottle all these feelings up,
03:08 - 03:10
you're going to fall into that depression phase.
03:11 - 03:15
So the next topic is a movie P. S. I love you.
03:15 - 03:20
The movie is based around a widow who finds 10 letters. Her late husband left for her.
03:20 - 03:25
And so the letters are to support holly not only to overcome
03:25 - 03:29
her grief but also to rediscover herself and to continue life alone.
03:29 - 03:35
So she finds the first letter when she is on her 30th birthday and it's basically
03:35 - 03:38
just a way of her husband to let her know it's okay to move on.
03:39 - 03:43
So this relates because when Ophelia kills herself him seems
03:43 - 03:47
to be unaware until he's actually watching her be put into
03:47 - 03:51
the ground and he confesses his love for her stating he
03:51 - 03:54
would do more than for her than her own brother.
03:54 - 03:58
So the quote I grabbed was I loved ophelia 40,000 brothers
03:58 - 04:02
could not with all their quantity of love make up.
04:02 - 04:02
My sum
04:03 - 04:05
that would though
04:05 - 04:07
what would thou do for her.
04:07 - 04:10
And so this is from Act five scene 1.
04:11 - 04:14
Um So basically he's mourning the death of someone.
04:14 - 04:17
And when you're mourning the death of someone you loved who
04:17 - 04:20
is not family but seen as more of a partner,
04:20 - 04:24
it can be extremely difficult for someone to move on and find closure.
04:24 - 04:30
So although love does not dissipate and you're always going to love them for
04:30 - 04:33
the rest of your life, Love must continue.
04:33 - 04:35
And so can life. So it's kind of
04:35 - 04:37
inspired by
04:37 - 04:43
those you lost but you have to live life for yourself. And in both of these
04:43 - 04:47
um Hamlet and P. S. I love you I find that
04:48 - 04:50
they're living life for themselves
04:50 - 04:52
but they are inspired by the people they lost.
04:54 - 04:56
The next is we bought a zoo.
04:56 - 05:01
So this movie is basically after the father he loses his wife,
05:01 - 05:05
he decides to move his family to a property continues.
05:05 - 05:05
Ooh
05:06 - 05:08
um Both Children are overcoming grief although
05:08 - 05:10
his daughter is quite excited about moving.
05:10 - 05:14
His son is really angry with his father and he's kind
05:14 - 05:17
of closed off and uses his art more to speak.
05:18 - 05:19
Um So
05:20 - 05:23
they used the restoration of the zoo
05:24 - 05:27
to kind of restore their family unit because once you lose someone in
05:27 - 05:31
your family it can be really hard to have that family unit.
05:32 - 05:37
So Hamlet loses his father and his mom is not keen on grieving
05:37 - 05:40
which is causing silent anger between them.
05:40 - 05:42
Just like Dylan and his father in the movie.
05:43 - 05:45
So a quote I pulled was a bloody deed,
05:45 - 05:51
almost as bad good mother as killing a king and marry with his brother.
05:51 - 05:54
This is from Act three Scene 4.
05:55 - 05:57
So anger is a process of grief.
05:57 - 06:00
But to overcome this you must communicate your anger.
06:00 - 06:07
So Dylan and the the young boy in the movie is able to confide in his father
06:07 - 06:11
and this builds a stronger bond through this grief
06:11 - 06:13
journey together because they're not in it alone.
06:13 - 06:18
And I think Hamlet kind of just confides in his friend Horatio
06:18 - 06:22
as he is there in times when Hamlet is facing grief, head on to support him,
06:22 - 06:25
Like when he was trying to reach out to his father,
06:26 - 06:30
the last I Chose is a tv show called Afterlife.
06:31 - 06:34
Um the show is based off perspective of a husband grieving
06:34 - 06:37
the loss of his wife who had no Children together,
06:37 - 06:39
but they did have a dog.
06:39 - 06:41
Um although we see the main character Tony
06:41 - 06:45
struggled immensely with depression and suicidal thoughts.
06:45 - 06:49
He also has a lot of anger and is not afraid to talk back to anyone else
06:49 - 06:52
as he believes he would kill himself soon enough.
06:52 - 06:57
So he really took on the depression phase and the anchor of gray ving.
06:58 - 07:01
So the relations, so when Hamlet lost his father,
07:01 - 07:04
he was contemplating killing himself as he thought there was
07:04 - 07:06
no more life could throw at him that he could handle
07:07 - 07:11
in the same way Tony feels as though the only reason
07:11 - 07:14
he is even alive is to take care of his dog,
07:14 - 07:18
he thinks he is only there to feed the dog against such,
07:18 - 07:22
But soon he comes to realize after losing his father
07:22 - 07:24
that there's more you can overcome
07:24 - 07:26
as you continue through life
07:26 - 07:29
and hard times create stepping stones to gain new
07:29 - 07:33
strength and he was able to grieve his father's death
07:33 - 07:38
properly privately and also openly in the same sense when
07:38 - 07:40
he wasn't able to do that for his wife,
07:41 - 07:43
um Hanley also learns he can overcome his grief
07:43 - 07:45
and although he is not the best of this,
07:45 - 07:49
he does show signs of improvement as when affiliate dies.
07:49 - 07:52
Although he is quite quite upset,
07:52 - 07:58
I found that he was able to overcome this more than um, he was with his father's death
07:59 - 08:00
and I quote, I pulled,
08:00 - 08:04
I wish my dirty flesh would melt away into a vapor
08:04 - 08:07
or that God had not made a law against suicide.
08:07 - 08:08
Oh God God,
08:09 - 08:12
how tired stale and pointing it this life is to me
08:12 - 08:15
And that's from Act one, scene 2.
08:16 - 08:16
So overall,
08:16 - 08:21
I believe the theme of overcoming grief is largely intertwined into
08:21 - 08:25
today's media as well as old literature and I think it's
08:25 - 08:28
very important to show the representation of the different stages of
08:28 - 08:32
grief as we can see in these forms of media.
08:34 - 08:36
Although Hamlet is just one piece of literature,
08:36 - 08:40
I find that it is really good at pulling out different
08:40 - 08:45
themes and overcoming grief was super highlighted for me while watching
08:45 - 08:49
this and I believe it's extremely important to talk through grief
08:49 - 08:52
and to know what stage of grief you are in.
08:52 - 08:54
So you can pull yourself out of it.
08:55 - 08:56
Thank you for listening
