  1. Hello, fourth graders.
  2. Well, this marks the last lesson that will be together
  3. for this unit.
  4. We have read Finished reading the entire book number, the
  5. stars. And when you get to the end of a
  6. novel, it's such a special time.
  7. It's a time when we look back at the rest
  8. of the book and try to piece together things that
  9. we hadn't really known about at the start of the
  10. book. But now we can see bigger meaning in once
  11. we finished the book.
  12. Can you take a minute right now?
  13. And just to think about maybe some things that surprised
  14. you, Um, in number the stars.
  15. I know that what still stands out to me are
  16. those handkerchiefs, right?
  17. I still find that amazing that scientists were able to
  18. come up with something like that to help this resistance
  19. movement. And then all those people that bonded together to
  20. help save the Jewish citizens of Denmark.
  21. Um, you know, I was thinking at the beginning that
  22. the story is about a brave family, you know, one
  23. brave family.
  24. But now I'm thinking this is all of Denmark.
  25. How brave was this entire country.
  26. But most of this country, right?
  27. Resistance leaders.
  28. Um, you know, like Peter organizing all of these escape
  29. route all the fishermen being brave enough to risk their
  30. lives to get these people across the waterways, Um, in
  31. hidden compartments under their boats.
  32. Scientists developing those handkerchiefs toe outsmart the German shepherds, right?
  33. And just ordinary families like Anne Marie's who were helping
  34. to guide the Jewish people to those fishing boats in
  35. the middle of the night so that they could get
  36. to safety.
  37. Um, that is just incredible.
  38. And it has stuck with me for years since the
  39. first time that I read this book.
  40. So when I look back to the beginning of this
  41. book, I believe that I felt I thought it was
  42. the Germans that had all the power here.
  43. Um, you know, they're the ones that were making everyone
  44. afraid who took people away who came in the middle
  45. of the night?
  46. Um, you know, in question people, I'm wondering how many
  47. of you felt that way to the beginning of the
  48. book that the Germans held all of the power here,
  49. so I used to think that it was the Germans
  50. who had all the powder, but right now, at the
  51. end of this book, I'm not so sure that that's
  52. the case.
  53. There might be other kinds of power.
  54. And that's what I want to investigate with you today.
  55. In today's lesson, I'm thinking that all the people of
  56. Denmark had more power than those German Nazis did.
  57. They had the power of friendship.
  58. Okay, Okay, so I couldn't resist Ha ha putting this
  59. picture in because all of this talk about power and
  60. resistance just brought out the idea of Star Wars.
  61. So if you're familiar with Star Wars at all, I
  62. think you'll be with me that you'll be able to,
  63. uh, make some parallels off what we're talking about this
  64. power struggle with Star Wars.
  65. So what I want to teach you today is that
  66. we can take a look at our books through the
  67. lens of power.
  68. And when we do that, it leads to all sorts
  69. of new thinking, even deeper level of thinking.
  70. And when we're looking at power, we want to take
  71. a look at who has the power.
  72. What form does that power take?
  73. You know, how do you see the power in the
  74. book in the story And how does that power change
  75. or shift?
  76. And when we spend time with those questions and try
  77. to come up with answers to them, that's when we
  78. see Mawr understanding in our book.
  79. That's when we even can apply that information to the
  80. ideas that we already have about the bigger themes in
  81. the book.
  82. Okay, so let's try this right.
  83. Let's give this a go.
  84. And when we're taking a look at power, there are
  85. some predictable questions that you want to ask yourself at
  86. the start of your investigation.
  87. One is who makes the rules and who is in
  88. charge. Okay, so I wanted to read to you a
  89. little bit from number the stars.
  90. I'm going to read a couple of just tiny excerpts
  91. for you today, and I want you to think about
  92. those two questions.
  93. Um, So Okay, so the first one is the story
  94. that starts with a scene where Ellen and Anne Marie
  95. are dashing down the streets.
  96. Right In the very beginning of the book on they
  97. bump into those soldiers on the corner, right?
  98. Oh, and one of the soldier gives them some orders.
  99. So here it is.
  100. Go home.
  101. all of you go study your school books and don't
  102. run. You look like hoodlums when you run.
  103. Okay, so let's see, Where did you get the dark
  104. haired one?
  105. He twisted the lock of Ellen's hair from a different
  106. father from a milk man.
  107. Okay, so what I want you to do right here
  108. is to just pause.
  109. Um, if you're with a partner turning, talk with a
  110. partner or jot down in your notebooks if you're by
  111. yourself, what do you noticing in these?
  112. Just two very small excerpts about power.
  113. Who makes the rules?
  114. Who is in charge?
  115. Go ahead and press pause to do that work and
  116. play when you're ready to continue.
  117. Okay, Now that you've had some time to think about
  118. that, I'm betting that you would agree that at this
  119. moment it seems like the Nazis have all of the
  120. power, right?
  121. Based on those two excerpts, um, after a reader thinks
  122. about who has the power, who makes the rules, who's
  123. in charge?
  124. The next step would be to think about who is
  125. or what is the resistance.
  126. Because whenever there is power, there is also going to
  127. be resistance because people don't just give up.
  128. It's not in our nature.
  129. I should say Give in or give up right?
  130. Either one.
  131. Definitely not in our nature.
  132. So we want to take a moment now to think
  133. about the resistance.
  134. Who is going against this power?
  135. Think about that and number the stars Who's going against
  136. the Nazis against the rules?
  137. I think it's pretty clear to us now because we
  138. finished the book that it is the Danish people.
  139. They even call themselves the Resistance, right?
  140. But the Danish people think about those scientists and fishermen
  141. and just everyday families who believe that it's important to
  142. save the Jewish Danes right?
  143. That's a special kind of power.
  144. That's the power to resist hatred and resist violence.
  145. Okay, Mhm.
  146. Now, when we go ahead and we look at our
  147. stories with this new power, sorry, this new lens of
  148. power and also resistance.
  149. When we do this, we're going to realize that there
  150. are all kinds of different types of power, not just
  151. one count, not just one kind.
  152. And the other part of that is what is the
  153. power of those who resist, right?
  154. That's a different kind of power.
  155. Now, here is an anchor chart that might be helpful.
  156. As you go ahead and talk about this with your
  157. group. Not only do you wanna ask who makes the
  158. rules and who is in charge, who has the power
  159. and what's the sign of that power?
  160. But also, what is the resistance and what is their
  161. power? Okay, I know that you are continuing to ask
  162. yourselves in your groups.
  163. What is this story really about?
  164. And I want you to work today on drafting and
  165. revising those ideas about a theme that sort of acts
  166. like a big tent for your whole book.
  167. That the sort the story sits under.
  168. Okay, think now about ways that people use their power
  169. in relationships to those big ideas.
  170. So add this statement of power onto your theme as
  171. another layer.
  172. Okay, so dig a little deeper.
  173. Spend some time with your groups today.
  174. Uh, continuing.
  175. You're reading, but thinking about this lens of power and
  176. talking about that with your group.
  177. Okay, I think you're ready.
  178. Off you go.
