00:01 - 00:02
Hi, I'm Chloe low.
00:02 - 00:05
I'm a strategy director and former head of Digital an
00:05 - 00:06
agency here in Sheffield.
00:07 - 00:10
I'm also the founder of parent list app.
00:11 - 00:14
So the parent of staff is designed with the single
00:15 - 00:18
aim to help manage the mental load of parenting as
00:18 - 00:21
a busy mom of a five year old and a
00:21 - 00:22
one year old.
00:22 - 00:25
I certainly live and breathe that daily struggle that comes
00:25 - 00:27
with the invisible load of parenting.
00:28 - 00:31
I set out a couple of years ago to validate
00:31 - 00:35
the idea with some research which unsurprisingly, I guess came
00:36 - 00:40
back with an overwhelming yes, I need some help and
00:40 - 00:41
I would love some help.
00:41 - 00:44
I think the difference in generations and the fact that
00:44 - 00:49
we are raising a new generation with different values really
00:50 - 00:52
has an impact on who we reach out to for
00:53 - 00:57
support. And actually research indicates that nowadays were more likely
00:57 - 01:00
to reach out to our digital community than we are
01:01 - 01:05
our own parents, one in 10 women or more than
01:05 - 01:09
one in 10 women developing mental illness during their pregnancy
01:10 - 01:10
or beyond.
01:11 - 01:14
And it affects dads to, you know, dads are susceptible
01:14 - 01:18
to mental illness in those early months after having a
01:18 - 01:22
baby. And the mental, you know, that kind of unseen,
01:23 - 01:27
invisible mental load that we all have to cope with
01:27 - 01:30
has a huge impact on our quality of life and
01:31 - 01:32
on our Children's quality of life too.
01:33 - 01:35
And fundamentally our enjoyment.
01:36 - 01:39
You know, we want to enjoy those inner liaise with
01:40 - 01:42
our Children because they do go really, really quickly.
01:44 - 01:48
I can certainly relate to this, but 75 of millennial
01:48 - 01:52
parents say that they continued to pursue their personal passions.
01:52 - 01:54
And one of the things that was really important to
01:54 - 01:57
me when I had Children was that I didn't lose
01:57 - 02:00
myself, my myself, my sense of identity.
02:00 - 02:06
I love my job, I love to travel and to
02:06 - 02:08
see friends and I didn't want to give that up.
02:09 - 02:14
I wanted I wanted my Children to enhance that and
02:15 - 02:16
you know, to do that.
02:16 - 02:18
We all need more time.
02:19 - 02:23
We need more head space and you know, kind of
02:23 - 02:26
coming out of the pandemic, we want to feel well.
02:27 - 02:30
So they're they're the currencies that we're working with with
02:30 - 02:30
the app.
02:31 - 02:37
We want to through providing really helpful bite sized content
02:38 - 02:42
on food, ideas what to pack when you're traveling, what
02:42 - 02:44
to pack and you swimming back for swimming lessons.
02:45 - 02:48
You know, that kind of constant barrage of things that
02:48 - 02:51
we need to remember and the checklist that are in
02:51 - 02:53
our mind, you know, that that ability to be able
02:54 - 02:58
to download them to create morehead State to save time
02:59 - 03:01
or to improve the quality of time that we are
03:01 - 03:04
spending with our Children, with our families, with our friends
03:04 - 03:05
or on ourselves.
03:07 - 03:11
So I can relate to a lot of this because
03:11 - 03:15
I've actually suffered with depression and anxiety since I was
03:15 - 03:20
17. So for over 20 years I have tried therapy.
03:22 - 03:23
I have tried medication.
03:24 - 03:28
I've found something that works for me now which is
03:28 - 03:31
great and mental health and mental health issues have certainly
03:31 - 03:34
become a part of who I am today, but it
03:34 - 03:38
did mean that I was susceptible to prenatal and post
03:38 - 03:39
natal depression.
03:40 - 03:44
So I have been there and it's, it can be
03:45 - 03:50
absolutely brutal and I think underpinning The app and um
03:51 - 03:54
you know, establishing this company is that purpose to really
03:54 - 03:58
help parents and during those, those months and beyond it
03:58 - 04:00
goes beyond post-Natal depression.
04:00 - 04:03
My daughter is 18 months old now and I am
04:04 - 04:08
on medication and completely comfortable with that, but it never,
04:08 - 04:09
it never escapes you.
04:10 - 04:13
And you know, this tool is really designed just to
04:13 - 04:16
be that helping hand and not exclusively for people that
04:16 - 04:17
have mental health issues.
04:18 - 04:21
Um, but hope, you know, hopefully they will find that
04:21 - 04:27
such an important tool kit in their self care coming
04:27 - 04:28
out of Covid.
04:29 - 04:33
It's been documented um you know quite widely that we
04:33 - 04:35
are in the grip of a mental health crisis.
04:36 - 04:39
I had a review of medical review with my doctor
04:39 - 04:41
recently, he asked how how are you?
04:42 - 04:42
Are you busy?
04:43 - 04:45
I was like, yes, I'm I'm double busy.
04:45 - 04:47
I've got my full time job.
04:47 - 04:48
I've also got the business that I'm developing.
04:49 - 04:52
And he asked me about that and when I told
04:53 - 04:55
him the concept, he turned around and said, right, I
04:55 - 04:57
want you to come and present it to our network
04:57 - 05:02
of surgeries because we are looking at resources to help
05:03 - 05:08
people with their mental health, but particularly segments that are
05:08 - 05:12
susceptible to additional pressures of which parents are.
05:12 - 05:17
You know, we are subject to increased pressure, not only
05:17 - 05:19
with the mental health of our own Children coming out
05:19 - 05:23
of a pandemic, having to home school, which from a
05:23 - 05:28
personal experience was incredibly hard and had a really big
05:29 - 05:30
impact on my mental health.
05:30 - 05:32
Actually, when my daughter went back to school, that was
05:32 - 05:35
a particularly low point for me.
05:35 - 05:39
Um and there will be parents experiencing this in lots
05:40 - 05:40
of different ways.
05:41 - 05:44
I don't truly believe that there is no kind of
05:44 - 05:46
one size fits all when it comes to parenting.
05:47 - 05:50
So there's a couple of examples on screen.
05:51 - 05:55
The app is currently in development, but this is what
05:56 - 05:58
shall be going live hopefully towards the end of this
05:58 - 06:01
year. Now there's lots of content across those different categories.
06:02 - 06:05
Um For the content has been designed for those that
06:05 - 06:09
are sleep deprived, that are just not feeling very creative,
06:10 - 06:12
you know, not feeling particularly motivated either.
06:13 - 06:16
So the checklist format for content, whether it be um
06:17 - 06:20
you know, questions to ask a child minder, if you're
06:20 - 06:23
trying to find a new child minder or activities that
06:24 - 06:26
you can do on a rainy day, The fact that
06:26 - 06:29
the content is in check, this format is really easy
06:29 - 06:31
to understand and easy to absorb.
06:32 - 06:35
But that mental accomplishment of ticking things off as you
06:35 - 06:36
go can be.
06:36 - 06:38
It can have such a huge impact on how you
06:39 - 06:41
feel about yourself and what you've achieved that day.
06:42 - 06:46
There's also some video content on the app and it's
06:46 - 06:51
all designed around mental health and there's 12 different categories
06:52 - 06:54
of content, Hopefully that will grow.
06:55 - 06:59
And there will be a mix of premium functionality and
06:59 - 07:00
the premium content as well.
07:00 - 07:05
So in the app we've recorded some breathing exercises, so,
07:05 - 07:09
you know, using your breath to feel energized or to
07:09 - 07:11
feel com or to feel more balanced if you're in
07:11 - 07:12
a stressful situation.
07:13 - 07:16
Also some movement exercises as well, you know, movement and
07:16 - 07:19
the impact it has on your physical and your mental
07:19 - 07:25
health. So having access to very short exercise videos or
07:25 - 07:29
movement videos, you know, they're not too intensive, but we've
07:29 - 07:31
got 5, 10 and 15 minute movement sessions.
07:31 - 07:34
We've also got 5, 10 and 15 minute meditation sessions
07:35 - 07:38
as well for anybody that just once that little escape
07:39 - 07:43
or kind of opportunity to um to get some balance
07:43 - 07:44
and to feel a bit more recharged.
07:46 - 07:51
Hopefully fingers crossed, we're launching in um kind of quarter
07:51 - 07:53
three, quarter four with this year.
07:54 - 07:57
Um It's um is a former head of digital and
07:57 - 07:59
all too familiar with the delays that come with tech
07:59 - 08:02
platforms, but I'm really excited to launch it.
08:02 - 08:04
We are better testing very soon.
08:05 - 08:09
Um, and the feedback that we've had from kind of
08:09 - 08:13
partners, expert contributors, um, you know, piers that we've tested
08:14 - 08:18
the initial concepts on has been overwhelmingly positive and, and
08:18 - 08:22
just kind of drives or continues to drive me on
08:22 - 08:26
this mission to help manage that mental load with with
08:26 - 08:26
other parents.
08:27 - 08:31
So thank you so much for listening to my story.
08:32 - 08:37
Any parents that are watching, keep your eyes peeled.
08:37 - 08:39
You can sign up to be a beta tester on
08:39 - 08:44
our website, but I am so excited to be able
08:44 - 08:48
to afford the time um, and have the support around
08:48 - 08:51
me to be able to pursue this project and just,
08:52 - 08:52
yeah, can't wait.
08:53 - 08:54
Thanks for listening.
