  1. Okay, This is part two, and I'm just going to
  2. pick up right where I left off because I ran
  3. out of time there.
  4. I have a 15 minute limit on these, so I'm
  5. looking at this.
  6. So at this stage, and I was kind of rushing
  7. someone slow down here a little bit because we're running
  8. out of time, but I have plenty.
  9. Um, at this stage, we're gonna try and figure out
  10. for the subject.
  11. If we go back to Slims.
  12. Sorry. Pardon me.
  13. Specs in Slims The very first thing we're gonna try
  14. and do is figure out the subject of this problem
  15. if we don't know it.
  16. So for morning song love set you going like a
  17. fat old watch, you figure out OK, somebody is talking
  18. to someone else.
  19. Said you going?
  20. We might not understand what they mean by love Set
  21. going like a faculty watch, but we can figure out
  22. OK, somebody is saying you.
  23. So one person is addressing another person.
  24. The midwife slaps your foot soles.
  25. So we understand that now.
  26. Midwife, someone helps give birth.
  27. Stopped your foot soles.
  28. That's when somebody's born and you're bald.
  29. Cry took its place among the elements.
  30. So you're you imagine a baby after this?
  31. They stopped the foot cells to make them cry.
  32. To make them breathe takes its place among the elements.
  33. Okay, I think we get it.
  34. Uh, there's a baby that's been born.
  35. So it With that in mind, we can now go
  36. back to that first line and say love set you
  37. going like a fat gold watch.
  38. What does this mean?
  39. What set this baby going?
  40. If if you is like a fat gold watch and
  41. a watch Ticks Teoh Oh, that's what I watch Does
  42. right It goes What said it going?
  43. Love? So the baby what made this baby essentially is
  44. love. And you can say this is probably love between
  45. between two partners Or you could interpret it as love
  46. Like my love for you Say you're going like a
  47. gold watch So that's where we can get a sense
  48. of Okay, that's what this poem is about.
  49. Subject. It seems like at least at this point, it's
  50. about a baby.
  51. Let's get going.
  52. Our voices echo magnifying your arrival New statue in a
  53. drafting museum.
  54. Your nakedness shadows are safety.
  55. We stand round blankly as Rawls.
  56. So this is really interesting because it takes a shift
  57. here. When a baby is born, you imagine soft and
  58. cuddly, right?
  59. And yet we're being This is being described as drafting
  60. museum. Your nakedness shadows our safety.
  61. You're a new statue and we stand around blankly as
  62. balls. So you get the sense here than, uh, with
  63. with, ah drafting museum and blankly is walls that perhaps
  64. it's not as warm reception.
  65. Perhaps there's a bit of a disconnect there between the
  66. baby and the parents.
  67. I'm kind of helping you through this, right, But we're
  68. gonna walk through some stuff later.
  69. Um, I'm no more your mother than the cloud that
  70. distills a mirror to reflect its own slow of basement
  71. at the winds hand.
  72. So we have this mother who says I'm no more
  73. your mother than the cloud.
  74. So a cloud that distills a mirror to distill is
  75. like Teoh.
  76. It's almost too, um to filter something, uh, by a
  77. process of like dripping.
  78. So a cloud that distills would be like a cloud
  79. that's raining.
  80. The water's coming down and that mirror when rain falls
  81. to the ground of mix puddles, you have like a
  82. reflection so that a cloud that is distilling ah, puddle
  83. to reflect its own slow of face mint or its
  84. own slow like dissipation, its own slow disappearing.
  85. So it's saying the Clavet fills a mirror.
  86. I am like a cloud, that stills that has you
  87. are the raindrops you've fallen and it makes you It's
  88. almost like I'm falling apart to give life to you.
  89. And I can tell you, as a parent, it often
  90. feels that way where you feel like I'm just giving
  91. these kids my life force and it's exhausting me, right?
  92. We'll talk about this more in class I want.
  93. I want to make sure we understand it.
  94. But I'm just trying to get you through kind of
  95. the big stuff so that you could do some of
  96. the little closer reading on your own.
  97. So, um, we get this confirms the idea that maybe
  98. there is a disconnect there between the baby that's been
  99. born and of the parents, right?
  100. It's not quite the loving w situation that you would
  101. expect. Um, and this is I think there's a societal
  102. expectation that when a baby is born, you'll feel this
  103. powerful thing Um, but I don't think that that's always
  104. the case.
  105. We know it's not always, it's a lot of people
  106. talk about how that the relationship has to develop over
  107. the process of weeks, months and years, right?
  108. Uh oh, yeah.
  109. All night your moth breath flickers among the flat pink
  110. roses. Imagine a moth.
  111. Imagine a moss like fluttering of their wings.
  112. How small, How quiet it ISS.
  113. And the suggestion here is that all night your moth
  114. breath. Small, smallest friend.
  115. Babies are incredible.
  116. They are amazing.
  117. What I and as a parent to do this, you
  118. sit and you watch them just pretty.
  119. And it's the most quiet home, just a spectacular thing.
  120. And it's all night.
  121. Your moth breath flickers among the flat pink roses so
  122. you can imagine this baby in a crib, possibly and
  123. some sort of a cradle of my flat, pink, um,
  124. softness. And the breath is just so quiet.
  125. And the life that you see is just It's miraculous,
  126. right? And she manages to convey that incredibly, I wake
  127. to listen.
  128. Ah, Farsi moves in my ear.
  129. So should you get the sense something starts again to
  130. shift Here, Here we have.
  131. I'll talk about since some, uh, some literary devices later,
  132. but this would be called Volta, where there's a vault.
  133. It would be a major shift in the poem if
  134. I remember correctly, so I have.
  135. I need to review that, but, um and so here
  136. we get most start to get a little bit of
  137. a shift here.
  138. Where up until then there's been almost this cold disconnect,
  139. and now we have this person waking up toe.
  140. Listen, ah far see moves in the U might year,
  141. and you get a sense that something has changed.
  142. One cry and I stumble from bed, couch heavy and
  143. floral in my Victorian nightgown.
  144. And so we see.
  145. Indeed, there is a change.
  146. The baby cries once.
  147. There's just a little a change.
  148. On immediately this, the speaker stumbles out of bed.
  149. Couch heavy suggestion of like feeling heavy is a couches
  150. tired at night, but also the idea that a mother
  151. who's breastfeeding giving the child milk here it gives this
  152. illusion allusions.
  153. Another theory term decided to two cows took how heavy
  154. and floral in my in Victoria nightgown.
  155. So that idea floral again, is a more nurturing feeling
  156. your mouth opens clean as a cat's.
  157. So, um, cats are known for having clean mouse.
  158. We'll talk about that analogy later, but the idea is
  159. the mountain mouth opens on and you see this connection
  160. this bond being formed between what we now knows as
  161. a mother and her baby, the Windows Square whitens and
  162. swallows its dole stars.
  163. So imagine looking out a window and it's dark in
  164. there are stars in the sky and then all of
  165. a sudden it whitens we get that sense that okay,
  166. morning is coming.
  167. And here we get a reference to morning song, this
  168. song, the mother singing to their baby.
  169. And now you try your handful of notes.
  170. The clear vows rise like balloons.
  171. So if we look at this idea of clear vowels,
  172. uh gives us a pretty clear sound.
  173. But being compared to balloons, how light and happy those
  174. are and colorful and bright.
  175. And that's what the baby is connected to.
  176. Let's look at that contrast from the second stands up,
  177. his poems, divided in stances will talk about that in
  178. class. Maheras, we talk about structure and all that.
  179. But as you go back to that second paragraph where
  180. the home is compared to a drafting museum.
  181. And while the baby shadows their safety, they stand around
  182. blankly as walls.
  183. You imagine just these white walls blink Now we have
  184. delusions, clear values, this life, this light, this color has
  185. been brought to it, right?
  186. So I basically I kind of fed that to you,
  187. and I think is a first poem.
  188. It's it's good for me to do that.
  189. However, in the future I will not be telling you
  190. what a polo is about, and you will have to
  191. sit and go through this and he'll have to kind
  192. of figure out what's going on here.
  193. How does this work?
  194. And I'll have you working in groups to do that.
  195. But that was just a little walk through of what
  196. it might mean to say.
  197. OK, what is the subject?
  198. What is literally happening in this poem?
  199. And I will admit that if I'm going through respects
  200. and slams that C will go back to that.
  201. I didn't just do subject there.
  202. I got a little bit into emotion and into some
  203. of the craftsmanship because I couldn't help myself, but really,
  204. you want to focus on trying to make sure that
  205. you have the subject clear for yourself.
  206. Okay. Um, purpose, What is the purpose of this poem?
  207. What would you think?
  208. I'm, uh I'm going to leave this one to you.
  209. That's gonna be a question.
  210. I'll ask you in class on Thursday.
  211. What is the purpose of this poem on, then?
  212. What? Emotions come through to you.
  213. Okay, so I've given you kind of the subject of
  214. what I'm gonna ask you to prepare for Class is
  215. what is the purpose?
  216. What is the emotion and five things about craftsmanship.
  217. So I want you to find five.
  218. This first s here, remember?
  219. Is supposed to be supposed to be structure.
  220. That's my mistake.
  221. Seconds. El is language.
  222. Do you see any language in that?
  223. That's interesting.
  224. Imagery. That's interesting.
  225. This can be sound.
  226. Smell, sight, touch Any of the senses of this fun
  227. sight, Sound, smell, touch teeth.
  228. Um, what is the patient?
  229. Do you feel this poem slows up, speeds down, speeds
  230. up or slows down on How is that accomplished?
  231. Right. And then finally, the sounds.
  232. What are some of the sounds here in this form?
  233. So I'm you just need to find five total.
  234. They don't have to be one from each or anything.
  235. You don't have to find five sounds.
  236. Five language, five imagery.
  237. You just need to find five total.
  238. That might be too language.
  239. One in Madrid, one sound or something like that.
  240. That's and one movement.
  241. That's up to you.
  242. Okay. Oh, I did not.
  243. Well, we're gonna go.
  244. We're gonna have to click through all of these.
  245. That's okay.
  246. Give me a moment.
  247. I will populate this presentation eventually with some examples there.
  248. But for now, I want you to be finding those
  249. and then sounds good.
  250. Great, wonderful.
  251. Let's move on, then.
  252. Eso Let's talk about what you need to prep for
  253. class next time.
  254. Uh, this is the homework to be prepared by Thursday.
  255. So I want you to try out inspect.
  256. Since limbs, I've given you subject, but I'd like you
  257. to come up with what is the purpose?
  258. The emotion on the five points of craftsmanship.
  259. Okay, um and then be ready to share that.
  260. Be ready to share.
  261. I'm looking forward to it.
  262. It's gonna be a lot of fun.
  263. All right, Thanks.
  264. Everybody Have a great day
