00:00 - 00:01
What is up?
00:01 - 00:03
Everybody, this is Mr Flight Hman.
00:03 - 00:05
Hope everyone still doing well, hanging in there.
00:06 - 00:08
Um, getting done what they need to get done.
00:08 - 00:12
Um, I am here with a mini lesson on the
00:13 - 00:16
process of naturalization in your government class you were learning
00:16 - 00:19
about. You're going to learn about the process of naturalization
00:20 - 00:23
becoming a citizen when you weren't naturally born here.
00:24 - 00:25
So we're gonna go through the steps.
00:25 - 00:28
We're gonna talk about what goes into that on Dhe.
00:28 - 00:30
Hopefully, it'll give you a heads up as far as,
00:31 - 00:33
um, what you're gonna be doing in class this week
00:34 - 00:34
in government.
00:34 - 00:36
All right, here we go.
00:36 - 00:41
So naturalization is defined as the legal process in which
00:41 - 00:42
a person can become a US citizen.
00:43 - 00:45
So if you're not born here, but you wanna be
00:45 - 00:46
a citizen, you have to go through a process.
00:47 - 00:49
And so naturalization is one of those processes.
00:49 - 00:50
There is the process.
00:51 - 00:52
Eso It could be a long process.
00:53 - 00:55
It could be a long wait for someone trying to
00:55 - 00:55
be a citizen.
00:56 - 00:58
So here are the six main steps that we look
00:59 - 01:01
at when we talk about becoming a citizen through naturalization
01:03 - 01:05
Step number one uh, the declaration of intent.
01:07 - 01:08
So if you're at least 18 years old and you
01:08 - 01:10
wanna be a citizen, um, you will declare your intent
01:11 - 01:12
to be a citizen.
01:12 - 01:14
Um, it's also called filing for a visa.
01:15 - 01:17
Um, so you may have heard it called that eso
01:18 - 01:19
is basically saying that you intend to go through the
01:19 - 01:23
process and you intend to follow through on your desire
01:23 - 01:23
to be a citizen.
01:25 - 01:29
So, for example, this is what part of the document
01:29 - 01:31
says it says I and then you put your name
01:32 - 01:35
do hereby declare my intention of becoming a citizen of
01:35 - 01:38
the United States within the time prescribed by law in
01:38 - 01:41
compliance with Public school Code of 1949 Section 12.
01:41 - 01:42
02 as amended.
01:43 - 01:44
It says some other things, too, but it's a pretty
01:44 - 01:45
simple form.
01:45 - 01:46
Um, that you fell out.
01:47 - 01:49
That's the very first step, uh, in this long process
01:50 - 01:51
of naturalization.
01:52 - 01:55
So Step number two, um, you're approved for your visa.
01:55 - 01:57
You wait while you wait.
01:57 - 01:59
You fulfill all these requirements.
02:01 - 02:06
Um, and they include being a legal permanent resident for
02:06 - 02:06
five years.
02:06 - 02:09
If you're single or three years, if you're married, eso
02:10 - 02:13
that the time constraint is different for single people and
02:13 - 02:13
married people.
02:14 - 02:18
Also, you must be considered to have good moral character.
02:19 - 02:20
Um, that means you haven't committed any major crimes.
02:21 - 02:22
You haven't done jail time.
02:22 - 02:27
Um, you don't You haven't refused child support payments for
02:27 - 02:28
your kids or anything like that.
02:28 - 02:31
They're gonna look into all of that before they let
02:31 - 02:31
you be a citizen.
02:32 - 02:35
Eso that is another one of the requirements.
02:36 - 02:39
Step number three is part of the paperwork.
02:39 - 02:41
There's a lot of paperwork involved in this process, but
02:41 - 02:42
this is part of it.
02:42 - 02:44
Um, this form is called the N 400 form.
02:45 - 02:45
You're gonna fill that out?
02:46 - 02:47
Um, answer all the questions.
02:47 - 02:49
You're probably if you're gonna be filling out this form.
02:50 - 02:52
Ah, lot of people use a lawyer to help them.
02:52 - 02:55
An immigration lawyer to help them fill this out to
02:55 - 02:56
make sure it's complete.
02:57 - 02:58
So that's step number three.
02:59 - 02:59
Step number four.
03:01 - 03:01
It's more paperwork.
03:02 - 03:05
Um, you would obtain to recent photographs of yourself on
03:06 - 03:07
dhe fill out any other necessary forms that you have
03:08 - 03:09
at this time in the process.
03:10 - 03:12
Um, so they only take photocopies.
03:13 - 03:16
They do not take original versions of the documents but
03:16 - 03:17
you will be gathering up more documents.
03:19 - 03:21
Step number five is the all important exam.
03:22 - 03:23
This is a civics exam.
03:24 - 03:26
So a lot of the things that they have in
03:26 - 03:29
the exam you learn in your civics class things like
03:29 - 03:33
how the governments that put together who is the secretary
03:33 - 03:33
of state.
03:34 - 03:35
How long could the president be president?
03:36 - 03:39
Things like that s o the exam is 100 questions,
03:39 - 03:40
and it's not multiple choice.
03:41 - 03:45
So it's, um it's gonna be a little trickier if
03:45 - 03:47
it's not multiple choice on the Prezi.
03:48 - 03:50
On the exam on the Prezi on school G, you
03:51 - 03:53
will see a video that shows some sample questions.
03:53 - 03:56
May be sure to watch that and look at some
03:57 - 03:58
of the sample questions that they could have on the
03:59 - 04:02
exam. Um, see how you would do if you were
04:02 - 04:02
taking the exam.
04:02 - 04:04
And there are multiple choice, but the ones on the
04:05 - 04:05
actual test art.
04:07 - 04:11
Yeah. All right.
04:11 - 04:11
Step number six.
04:12 - 04:13
After you pass the exam.
04:13 - 04:16
After you fulfilled all these requirements, um, is the acceptance
04:17 - 04:19
and the oath So you were accepted as ah ce
04:19 - 04:21
naturalized citizen of the United States.
04:21 - 04:22
And then you take an oath.
04:23 - 04:24
And a lot of times you do this in a
04:24 - 04:27
group of people, Um, you raise your right hand and
04:27 - 04:29
you say what they tell you to say The big
04:29 - 04:31
celebration, Um, people are happy.
04:31 - 04:35
People are crying, So it's it's Ah, it's, um, fun
04:35 - 04:36
to watch if you've never seen one before.
04:37 - 04:40
There's a video on the president on school aji.
04:40 - 04:40
So go ahead.
04:41 - 04:43
And if you want to see the video, go to
04:43 - 04:44
the present and watch the video.
04:46 - 04:51
So after that is done, you are a naturalized citizen
04:51 - 04:53
of the United States, so that is a breakdown of
04:53 - 04:54
the whole process.
04:55 - 04:56
Um, make sure you're going to school.
04:56 - 04:56
Do you?
04:57 - 05:00
Doing everything required for this class and your other classes?
05:01 - 05:03
Um, if you have any questions, let us know.
05:04 - 05:06
Email your teachers, reach out, make sure you're getting your
05:06 - 05:06
needs met.
05:07 - 05:11
Otherwise, hope everyone's still doing well and hopefully see you
05:11 - 05:12
all very soon.
