00:00 - 00:02
Good morning, Chargers.
00:03 - 00:04
I hope everybody's doing well.
00:05 - 00:06
I hope you're feeling good.
00:06 - 00:11
I hope your maintaining your positive attitudes and we're ready
00:11 - 00:16
to be excited about finishing up the last activity and
00:16 - 00:17
reading assignment today.
00:18 - 00:24
Who today we are, um, gonna learn about some of
00:24 - 00:26
the effects of the civil war.
00:28 - 00:30
Uh, we're gonna learn a little bit about the men
00:30 - 00:34
on the battlefield and even those at home.
00:35 - 00:40
Men, women and Children all races and genders were affected
00:41 - 00:43
tremendously by this war.
00:44 - 00:45
It was a struggle for all people.
00:47 - 00:49
They were all Americans, and they were all in it
00:49 - 00:56
together, even though they had differences and different visions of
00:56 - 00:57
how they saw this country being run.
00:58 - 01:00
They were technically all Americans.
01:01 - 01:04
So they were all in this war amongst themselves.
01:06 - 01:09
Anyway, as a soldier, those guys, they dealt with their
01:09 - 01:13
own set of problems, which is combat being the obvious
01:13 - 01:16
one. Um, but you didn't see combat that often.
01:17 - 01:18
A lot of people think of the Civil War.
01:18 - 01:19
Is guns blazing?
01:20 - 01:24
Cannons firing were shouting, uh, combat all the time.
01:25 - 01:27
But that's not necessarily how it waas.
01:27 - 01:32
Combat was fairly rare for each individual soldier.
01:33 - 01:36
Um, but they did come with their own set of
01:36 - 01:39
problems. So it was not just a combat.
01:40 - 01:43
Other things such is marching from destination of destination in
01:43 - 01:45
same pair of boots in the same pair of clothes.
01:46 - 01:49
Carrying are your gear from place to place and setting
01:50 - 01:56
up camp, um, nightly daily, then having lack of goods
01:56 - 01:58
to be comfortable in the elements.
01:59 - 02:02
Um, soldiers also don't dealt with loneliness.
02:03 - 02:04
Um, you know, they miss their families.
02:05 - 02:09
They Mr Friends, they missed, uh, they missed home on
02:10 - 02:12
dhe. Then starvation was another one.
02:12 - 02:15
Soldiers were not very well provided for when it came
02:15 - 02:15
to food.
02:16 - 02:19
They carry around a bag of flour, bag of beans
02:19 - 02:22
or a little bag of coffee beans, things like that.
02:23 - 02:23
And that's about it.
02:24 - 02:29
They had some, uh, some food to eat to get
02:30 - 02:33
them through, but it was very scarce.
02:33 - 02:35
It was very little anyways on.
02:36 - 02:39
So the separation from their families was true, and the
02:40 - 02:42
struggles were real for each individual soldier.
02:43 - 02:46
But the families back home they had to bring on
02:46 - 02:47
they have their own struggles to they had to take
02:48 - 02:50
on their own new roles.
02:51 - 02:52
Ah, at the house.
02:53 - 02:55
So women became heads of household.
02:55 - 02:56
All the men were out fighting.
02:58 - 02:59
They had to maintain the farms.
02:59 - 03:00
They had to run the factories.
03:01 - 03:03
They also had to raise two kids and do their
03:03 - 03:04
daily jobs as well.
03:05 - 03:06
They had to make the money so that they could
03:06 - 03:08
put food on the table, and then they had to
03:08 - 03:09
cook that food as well.
03:09 - 03:18
So they were definitely no less, um, valued then the
03:19 - 03:22
soldiers, because they were running their own wars at home
03:23 - 03:27
trying to maintain, ah, household on at the same time,
03:27 - 03:30
they were missing their husbands, their brothers, their fathers, their
03:30 - 03:34
uncles and probably their sons our of age to be
03:34 - 03:35
fighting out there on the battlefield.
03:36 - 03:40
So everyone had a big struggle, and they were all
03:40 - 03:41
affected by this war.
03:42 - 03:42
Today's assignment.
03:43 - 03:46
I'm gonna ask you guys to read about some of
03:46 - 03:49
these effects of the horse, a short two pager, and
03:49 - 03:51
then I want you to try and write a little
03:51 - 03:56
letter, um, pretending to be either a soldier on the
03:56 - 04:01
battlefield or a mother from home or just a daughter
04:01 - 04:04
at home who's missing her father or a son at
04:04 - 04:07
home who is wanting to go to the war and
04:07 - 04:08
help, but they're too young to whatever.
04:09 - 04:10
Eso use your imagination.
04:11 - 04:11
Be creative here.
04:12 - 04:15
Um, I've provided you an example of a letter from
04:16 - 04:20
a union soldier that had crossed into enemy territory in
04:20 - 04:20
the south.
04:21 - 04:23
Read the example and then I want you to create
04:23 - 04:23
your own.
04:24 - 04:28
I hope everyone is excited to be finishing up with
04:28 - 04:29
their history work on Thursday.
04:30 - 04:33
I'm going to make the last or maybe the second
04:34 - 04:34
toe last video.
04:35 - 04:40
Um, and I'll be issuing the civil war required assessment.
04:41 - 04:43
I hope you guys have a great day today.
04:43 - 04:44
Take care.
