00:01 - 00:02
Hello, everyone.
00:02 - 00:04
My name is Catherine, and I'd like to present some
00:04 - 00:06
background information about myself.
00:07 - 00:08
I'm originally from Scarborough, Ontario.
00:09 - 00:11
I lived much of my life in Nova Scotia, and
00:11 - 00:14
I currently live in Edmonson with my husband and our
00:14 - 00:16
daughter. The thing I like most about living in Alberta
00:17 - 00:19
is being close to the mountains as my family or
00:19 - 00:20
huge camping enthusiasts.
00:21 - 00:23
We loved being outdoors, and these days it seems like
00:23 - 00:25
we spend most of our time at the playground.
00:32 - 00:34
My undergraduate degree is in English and psychology, and I'm
00:34 - 00:38
currently a student at the University of Alberta, studying for
00:38 - 00:40
my master's in library and information studies.
00:41 - 00:44
I have previously worked at the Devon Public Library, where
00:44 - 00:47
I planned and implemented summer programming for Children and teens.
00:48 - 00:52
I've also worked at the Alberta Legislature Library, assisting with
00:52 - 00:53
collection management projects.
00:54 - 00:56
Right now, I work for the University of Alberta libraries
00:57 - 01:00
at the Research and Collections Resource Facility, which is fun
01:00 - 01:02
because I get to be a librarian who also drives
01:03 - 01:05
a forklift in a giant warehouse of books.
01:09 - 01:11
As someone who grew up in the eighties, technology hasn't
01:12 - 01:14
always occupied the same role in my life as it
01:14 - 01:14
does now.
01:15 - 01:19
My first introduction to computer technology was playing video games
01:19 - 01:22
with my friends, First Atari and the Nintendo Games.
01:23 - 01:25
Video games at that time were very gendered and mostly
01:26 - 01:26
marketed to boys.
01:27 - 01:27
But I really enjoyed Hm.
01:28 - 01:30
We got our first family computer when I was eight
01:31 - 01:33
or nine, but since it was pretty Internet, I didn't
01:33 - 01:34
take too much of an interest in it.
01:35 - 01:37
Dial up Internet was around when I was in high
01:37 - 01:40
school, but it wasn't until Web 2.0, and social networking
01:40 - 01:43
became popular that I started to get excited about the
01:43 - 01:44
possibilities of this new technology.
01:50 - 01:52
I'm very passionate about Library in ship as libraries advocate
01:53 - 01:55
for many of the things I believe in, like access
01:56 - 02:01
to education, lifelong learning, social responsibility and sustainability, this is
02:01 - 02:03
a really exciting time to be entering the field of
02:03 - 02:06
library in ship as libraries have been transformed by new
02:06 - 02:10
technologies creating physical and online spaces designed for collaborative learning
02:10 - 02:11
and exploration.
02:12 - 02:15
The maker space movement in particular, is something that I
02:15 - 02:18
find really exciting and I love being involved with Web
02:19 - 02:21
2.0 has changed our society from a culture of content,
02:22 - 02:23
consumers to a culture of creators.
02:24 - 02:28
Computer technologies facilitate some of the values that brought me
02:28 - 02:29
to a library in ship in the first place.
02:30 - 02:33
And I'm excited to continue to learn these digital tools
02:33 - 02:35
both in my professional and my personal life.
