00:01 - 00:03
Hello. My name is Trip smith and this is my
00:03 - 00:06
differentiated classroom For the 6th grade.
00:07 - 00:09
World cultures in geography class at the McCauley School.
00:11 - 00:12
His presentations for A.
00:12 - 00:12
D. U.
00:12 - 00:20
6 73 dr Jenkins, Arizona Arizona Global University classroom differentiation
00:21 - 00:25
in my classroom is that the Macaulay school At the
00:25 - 00:26
McCauley Middle School?
00:26 - 00:29
To be exact, this is grades six through 8 Leads
00:29 - 00:31
into a high school on the same campus.
00:32 - 00:35
Student body is upper to middle class, with 17% of
00:35 - 00:37
the student body being made up of students of colour.
00:38 - 00:39
Macaulay school is all boys.
00:40 - 00:44
I teach the entire 6th grade in five classes, about
00:44 - 00:45
18 students each.
00:46 - 00:50
Um In this particular picture that you see my classroom
00:51 - 00:59
is the second floor and the second window grouping from
01:00 - 01:04
the right as you face this, it is a beautiful
01:04 - 01:08
classroom. It overlooks the entire town of Chattanooga Lookout mountain
01:09 - 01:11
and Signal mountain from Missionary Ridge.
01:12 - 01:17
It is the perfect classroom for a geography class and
01:17 - 01:17
cultures class.
01:18 - 01:20
You can see a lot of our culture and geography
01:21 - 01:21
from the classroom.
01:23 - 01:25
Um The classroom environment are set up.
01:27 - 01:33
Um uh program I used did not allow me to
01:33 - 01:33
put desks in.
01:34 - 01:39
I normally have the students in desks groups in force.
01:40 - 01:43
My desk is in the back of the classroom, however,
01:44 - 01:45
I rarely sit at it.
01:46 - 01:52
We have a whiteboard, interactive whiteboard and um on the
01:53 - 01:55
wall and closest to the rug.
01:55 - 02:00
All of the windows face out west with those individual
02:00 - 02:05
disks. Um I can regroup them um and they're all
02:05 - 02:06
easily rearranged.
02:07 - 02:11
Uh The groupings also allow me for group activities, collaboration
02:12 - 02:14
activities that we do at the end of class.
02:15 - 02:19
Um The arrangement allows me to move around the classroom
02:20 - 02:23
freely and with sixth grade boys, it keeps them moving
02:24 - 02:27
around as they followed me around the classroom as I
02:27 - 02:29
engage in the classroom discussion.
02:30 - 02:33
Um The desks can also be moved apart um to
02:33 - 02:37
be created into learning individual learning spaces or peer to
02:37 - 02:40
peer. We could go through a lot of different scenarios
02:42 - 02:44
with how to group these desks and how to get
02:45 - 02:47
the boys to interact with our content.
02:48 - 02:49
All of these can be found.
02:50 - 02:53
These ways of differentiation can be found in the resilient
02:54 - 02:55
educator in 2021.
02:56 - 02:58
We also want to make sure that the boys are
02:58 - 03:04
constantly immersed um with lots of things, but photos, images
03:05 - 03:07
are constantly offered to the guys.
03:07 - 03:09
These are some of the images and they're in different
03:09 - 03:11
forms. Uh, several of these are puzzles.
03:11 - 03:13
I like to display these because I like to do
03:13 - 03:16
puzzles and I think that's a good way for the
03:16 - 03:19
boys to feel like even as an adult, there are
03:19 - 03:20
some things that you can do that you did when
03:20 - 03:21
you were a kid as well.
03:22 - 03:25
Um, and this buddha poster is what you see when
03:26 - 03:28
you come into the classroom and I really want that
03:28 - 03:33
to be that the center, our class engagement, we follow
03:33 - 03:34
the golden rule, happiness.
03:35 - 03:39
If we treat everybody will, everybody will be happy.
03:40 - 03:43
So we like to have that kind of environment and
03:43 - 03:46
it supports, uh, and we'll support that here in the
03:46 - 03:47
next slide.
03:48 - 03:54
Um, as you can see, the classroom is really set
03:55 - 04:01
up for a discussion based class where the students and
04:01 - 04:05
the instructor look to move through a variety of content
04:06 - 04:11
to gain better understanding of their textual readings and the
04:11 - 04:14
learning, our behavioral environment.
04:16 - 04:20
We start off everything with the golden rule, trying to
04:20 - 04:23
come to class happy, treat others as you would want
04:23 - 04:24
them to be treated.
04:25 - 04:28
Um, all of our content is delivered through what President
04:28 - 04:29
content presentation.
04:30 - 04:39
Um, I have Youtube videos, visuals, discussion questions, um, that
04:39 - 04:42
we worked through with each lesson.
04:43 - 04:46
Um, we asked the boys to always be polite, remember
04:46 - 04:47
to respect others.
04:48 - 04:50
One of the big things we like to do in
04:50 - 04:52
this class is when I do group, I like to
04:52 - 04:54
make sure that the groups are diverse.
04:55 - 05:00
Um, and another big thing in our classroom is asking
05:01 - 05:04
questions, um, and getting involved in the discussions as far
05:04 - 05:07
as I'm concerned, the only bad question is one that
05:07 - 05:10
is not asked, and I think that describes a lot
05:10 - 05:10
about our classroom.
05:11 - 05:11
It's 1/6 grade classroom.
05:12 - 05:16
The boys are inquisitive, we use that inquisitive nature to
05:16 - 05:20
drive the learning process and skill building process here in
05:20 - 05:21
this class.
05:21 - 05:25
We do a lot of inference, um, making uh, lots
05:25 - 05:31
of skill building for building arguments, drawing conclusions, things like
05:31 - 05:35
that are all part of the general makeup of this
05:36 - 05:41
class. Some general reference.
05:42 - 05:46
Um, some references here for um, my differentiated classroom.
05:51 - 05:52
Thank you for listening today.
