00:01 - 00:03
Hi guys, thank you for having me here.
00:03 - 00:09
Even if I'm not live, was asked to Conrad and Jack to provide some summary,
00:09 - 00:14
some feedback on how my remote working has been for the past seven months.
00:14 - 00:18
So thank you for the opportunity and Jack, it's appealing to see you going,
00:18 - 00:22
but I'm sure we'll we'll cross our paths again in the future.
00:22 - 00:24
So what I wanted to explain a bit what happened.
00:24 - 00:29
So I committed with the company and with the project for
00:29 - 00:34
being the Digital project manager for the Western Harbor Tunnel project that
00:34 - 00:38
started back in january but in november had to move away
00:38 - 00:42
from Australia to stay close to the families here in europe.
00:42 - 00:45
So um but anyways,
00:45 - 00:47
I had given my word that I was going to do
00:47 - 00:50
that project and you know how difficult was to find resources.
00:50 - 00:54
So I said, yeah, I'll do it just do it remotely and let's see how it goes.
00:54 - 01:00
So this pose many challenges, but it also demonstrated good, good outcomes,
01:00 - 01:01
good opportunities.
01:03 - 01:05
I've summarized here some pros and cons
01:05 - 01:06
that I'd like to take you through.
01:06 - 01:12
So the real pro of being able to work abroad in a different
01:12 - 01:18
time zone remotely was that I gained benefits from the time focus time.
01:18 - 01:19
So when
01:20 - 01:23
you guys in Australia are asleep for the guys in the US are still asleep,
01:23 - 01:25
they haven't came up Russia yet.
01:25 - 01:31
So I've managed to do very much work done in those 45
01:31 - 01:36
hours that we don't have overlaps because obviously my focus time is uh
01:37 - 01:40
because obviously my focus is on the task that
01:40 - 01:44
I have to do without any interruption or distraction,
01:44 - 01:46
but that was very positive.
01:48 - 01:49
The other thing is um
01:51 - 01:56
there's no bugging said before, so I can't come and bug you.
01:56 - 02:01
I removed the destruction for myself but also remove being on a different time zone,
02:01 - 02:04
remove the destruction of others coming where that happens a lot,
02:04 - 02:06
where where you are in,
02:06 - 02:10
in an office and people just come up to tell a joke to ask you go for a coffee,
02:10 - 02:11
which is still great.
02:11 - 02:16
But um yeah, you, you removed that option from your daily work
02:17 - 02:22
and the other good thing that I've noticed is that you have time to prepare for the,
02:22 - 02:26
what I call wow factor and apologize if I'm inventing some words,
02:26 - 02:30
english is not obviously my, my main language.
02:30 - 02:34
So the wow factor, what I call wow factor is the overnight works.
02:34 - 02:37
So when Australia go to sleep and they asked me to
02:37 - 02:39
take over on some
02:39 - 02:41
tasks,
02:41 - 02:43
the great thing is that the next morning,
02:43 - 02:45
all the work when you guys wake up or
02:45 - 02:48
when the project for for Western harbor tunnel example
02:48 - 02:53
was waking up, they had the task completed already and that happened
02:54 - 02:54
both ways.
02:54 - 02:56
So when I was at the end of my day
02:56 - 02:59
and asking someone to do something at the next morning,
02:59 - 03:01
when I was connecting ahead, all these tasks already down.
03:01 - 03:03
So we were kind of working on
03:03 - 03:07
two shifts in one day, that was was a great,
03:07 - 03:12
great actually outcome of this work in different time zones,
03:13 - 03:16
A few cons I think I was missing
03:16 - 03:20
on face to face, obviously it's always good to
03:20 - 03:22
face to face meet people and
03:23 - 03:25
chit chat and so on, so you reduce that
03:25 - 03:28
part when you are working remotely.
03:28 - 03:35
And the second thing is you miss on events and like um social gatherings,
03:35 - 03:39
project drinks or any sort of catch up
03:39 - 03:42
and but also you miss on merchandise and I don't know
03:42 - 03:46
why when your remote uh you're kind of forgotten people don't
03:46 - 03:48
know where you live and I was enjoying so much all
03:48 - 03:51
the tweets that I was having when I was in Brisbane.
03:51 - 03:53
Um I lived out there
03:53 - 03:57
and the third thing is you can't wax lacquer,
03:57 - 04:04
so I had many times in Western Harvard Tunnel project where I had to go and chase the,
04:05 - 04:09
the consultants so externals obviously there's no slackers in willow as we know,
04:10 - 04:15
but I had to chase the consultants and follow them up and if I was in the
04:15 - 04:19
office I would have gone there and sat on their desk and wait until they come back
04:19 - 04:21
or they gave me an answer and unfortunately
04:21 - 04:24
being online they were just going offline disappearing from
04:24 - 04:29
teams not replying to emails and it was really hard to get the output that I needed.
04:29 - 04:30
So yeah, that's
04:31 - 04:33
country of working remotely.
04:34 - 04:34
Um
04:35 - 04:38
another things I wanted to share is lesson learned, so
04:39 - 04:41
it's important when you uh
04:42 - 04:44
change your working style,
04:44 - 04:47
you start doing crazy hours because you want to
04:47 - 04:51
still be able to, as Alejandro will mention later,
04:51 - 04:54
you want to still be able to prove that you're doing something,
04:54 - 04:58
so you want to be able to be present all the time and that's very difficult.
04:58 - 04:59
It's almost impossible.
04:59 - 05:01
You can't cover three different time zones
05:01 - 05:04
on one working day within reasonable hours.
05:04 - 05:09
So you have to start being picky and see okay, I will attend this meeting,
05:09 - 05:11
I will watch the recording for the other meeting and
05:11 - 05:15
I will catch up with someone a synchronous works.
05:16 - 05:19
It's it's a choose, it's a choice that you have to make and you
05:20 - 05:23
you take it will take a while to get it.
05:23 - 05:24
But yeah,
05:24 - 05:28
that's that's something that you need to give up on some of your other meetings that
05:28 - 05:32
you like and you will just like this one and you'll watch the recording later on.
05:32 - 05:37
Um The third lesson learned is that it's always good to have um
05:38 - 05:39
real life presence,
05:39 - 05:43
so especially on a project where we have to be in
05:43 - 05:46
the client's office and they want to see bums on seats.
05:46 - 05:51
So we I was lucky that Alejandro did it initially and then even
05:51 - 05:52
um
05:52 - 05:56
we're covering for me, so going once a week to the project office,
05:56 - 05:59
even if they were working on different projects and other stuff,
05:59 - 06:02
but the client really wanted to see the presence there, so
06:03 - 06:07
Unfortunately we can't change this, but it's a, it's a lesson learned,
06:07 - 06:11
so we can't have 100% remote working,
06:11 - 06:13
especially when you're planning to work on projects.
06:14 - 06:18
And the last thing I wanted to share with you is what I've noticed.
06:18 - 06:22
So I've noticed that there was initially not much difference in terms of
06:23 - 06:25
working from home due to covid or working remotely,
06:25 - 06:29
because for the last two years when I was in Brisbane, I was still
06:30 - 06:33
managing to catch catching up with colleagues, only over teams.
06:33 - 06:38
So it didn't matter if they were in Brisbane in Sydney in in europe,
06:38 - 06:40
but my communication were still happening through teams.
06:40 - 06:43
So that has really not much changed,
06:43 - 06:47
but still at the same time you have to be careful of what I call the,
06:48 - 06:49
the fake grip.
06:49 - 06:51
I don't know if if it's a thing and just making it up,
06:51 - 06:54
but I had a feeling that because I was watching the recording,
06:55 - 06:59
I was catching up with all the things the next day I was present, I was there.
06:59 - 07:03
But that feeling was kind of fake because it wasn't two ways
07:03 - 07:06
feeling so from the other side from your side guys in Australia,
07:06 - 07:07
um,
07:07 - 07:08
I wasn't there.
07:08 - 07:09
So if you have any question,
07:09 - 07:14
you have to wait until I came back or I came online and you didn't see my face,
07:14 - 07:17
I didn't see my body, so it looked like that, I wasn't there.
07:17 - 07:22
So this is a one thing that we need to pay attention with, so just to
07:23 - 07:25
make sure that because you're catching up on everything doesn't mean
07:25 - 07:28
that everybody else is catching up on you as well.
07:29 - 07:31
And the last thing is that you make new best friends.
07:31 - 07:37
So time and date dot com became a very good friend and I actually saved
07:37 - 07:40
my different working schedule with different hours on
07:40 - 07:43
my deck stop as my desktop background.
07:43 - 07:46
So when I have to catch up with different times on different people,
07:46 - 07:48
different areas, I tried to
07:48 - 07:52
always check what time is it for them and scheduling meeting and so on.
07:52 - 07:55
That became very important to
07:56 - 08:02
So thank you for the opportunity. I think I hope you enjoy my
08:02 - 08:05
my summary, my perspective perception.
08:06 - 08:12
I hope you enjoyed my perception of remote working and I hand it over to alejandra.
08:12 - 08:13
Thank you all.
