  1. understanding member roles is important when relating groups, we need
  2. to know what roles to look for, which ones are
  3. healthy and which ones are unhealthy.
  4. So there's three types of rules.
  5. There's task girls that are focused on the group's goals,
  6. and the group members take on these roles as I
  7. mean to bring about support for one another and to
  8. help achieve the task at hand.
  9. Then there's a relationship rules, and these focus on the
  10. interpersonal and relationship goals of the group.
  11. And so these people are gonna be seeking to grilled
  12. connection. And then there's individual rules, and these individual roles
  13. are not healthy to a group.
  14. Groups are groups, individuals are individuals.
  15. And when we step into an individual role, we're no
  16. longer focused on the group who are focused on ourselves.
  17. And so this is when someone's focused on their own
  18. needs, not the needs of the group.
  19. So let's start with the task rules, these rules that
  20. someone might take in a group to help accomplish the
  21. task rates with the initiator or the contributor.
  22. They're gonna initiate what's going on.
  23. They're gonna contribute toe what needs to get done.
  24. The information seekers gonna ask questions.
  25. They're going to seek more information.
  26. What would that look like?
  27. How would that feel?
  28. How will we accomplish that?
  29. The opinion seeker is going to try to understand what
  30. the opinion is of the group.
  31. What are you feeling?
  32. How is that sitting with you?
  33. How do you feel about this?
  34. Right. That person might be someone who's really good at
  35. knowing. Okay, so and so hasn't shared in a little
  36. bit. Hey, what are your thoughts?
  37. I haven't heard from you with a little bit right
  38. there. Opinion seeker information giver.
  39. Might be giving information about things that are important to
  40. know about things that have happened already in the group.
  41. Things that are going on right now.
  42. Well, we want to plan a pizza party for the
  43. for the school on Friday.
  44. Okay, Well, the school also has an event going on
  45. Saturday, so maybe we know I want to look at
  46. next week.
  47. So this way there's not two events in a row.
  48. Oh, that's great information.
  49. The opinion giver.
  50. The opinion.
  51. Give her while they might be giving their opinion.
  52. Hopefully, their opinion, The opinion they're giving is based on
  53. the group right It is if they give their own
  54. opinion than they're not group minded.
  55. But if they kind of give a group opinion, Okay,
  56. this is what I feel like.
  57. The group saying this is the opinion is now we
  58. want to move forward.
  59. Great deal.
  60. Lab burrito was gonna break things down.
  61. Look at in more detail.
  62. The coordinator is going to gather all the pieces.
  63. Gonna maybe figure out who's going to do what?
  64. The Orient, Er, who's going to start it off is
  65. gonna share.
  66. Okay, How are we going to move forward?
  67. What's this gonna look like, right?
  68. They're gonna orient people toe where we're going and how
  69. we're going to get there.
  70. The evaluator of the critic is someone is going to
  71. say, OK, so this is what we've come up with
  72. so far.
  73. Um, okay.
  74. And that looks like that's gonna work.
  75. What about this?
  76. This piece seems a little bit on steady.
  77. Still the energizer, they're gonna be someone that's going to
  78. keep going while you guys were great.
  79. You know what?
  80. Great idea.
  81. Oh, right.
  82. Yeah. What is that gonna look like?
  83. Hey, keep going.
  84. Guys were out.
  85. Great. The procedural technician they're going to really be procedural
  86. oriented. Okay, well, this is the first up, and that's
  87. the second step.
  88. And this is the third step.
  89. And then the recorder there most likely gonna be taking
  90. the meeting's minutes and recording.
  91. What's going on in these meetings and these air task
  92. rules and these rules that people will take on and
  93. various times in a group to a help of the
  94. group accomplished their group.
  95. Then there the relationship rules, right?
  96. There's the encourager.
  97. Someone is gonna be encouraging others harmonizer seeking harmony, trying
  98. to create safety within the group.
  99. The Compromiser.
  100. Who's gonna be really good at saying, OK, you have
  101. a really great A deer knew of a really great
  102. idea. Why don't we meet in the middle, right?
  103. And let's compromise.
  104. Let's bring these two ideas together and create something really
  105. great. The gatekeeper, the expediter, right?
  106. They're gonna be the one that are making sure that
  107. the rules are being followed, that things are being kept
  108. in place.
  109. They're going to be the ones that are gonna be
  110. organizing that information and ensuring that it's all ready to
  111. go the standard setter.
  112. They're gonna be setting the standards.
  113. They're gonna be the ones that people are gonna look
  114. to as the group moves forward.
  115. Okay, this is someone they're gonna look to on how
  116. to keep moving forward and how to lead and how
  117. to participate the group observer commentator.
  118. They're gonna be someone that's really great at looking and
  119. watching what's going on, right?
  120. This isn't a leader role.
  121. It's a member rule and they're gonna be watching and
  122. they're going to commentate and they're going observe things.
  123. And they're in from information could be very helpful.
  124. And then the follower right there going to be someone
  125. who they don't really need a huge position in the
  126. group. They're not really seeking to be the compromise or
  127. their harmonizer, but they'll follow.
  128. They'll go along with the group that go with the
  129. group. And again someone could be a follower today and
  130. in a couple of days become the encourager.
  131. These aren't static roles that they take, but these were
  132. the relationship rules that will come up, and then the
  133. individual rules.
  134. These are the rules that we need to be aware
  135. of and are cautious that we don't allow them to
  136. stay the aggressor.
  137. The blocker, The Dominator, the invader, the evader of the
  138. self Confessor, right?
  139. The help seeker, the recognition secret, the play boy or
  140. girl, the special interest pleader.
  141. But these are things that people are using about themselves.
  142. These are about me.
  143. And when we become so focused in a group, we
  144. lose sight of the group gold.
  145. And now it's all about us.
  146. And if we have a bunch of people in a
  147. room, is all about them and not about the group.
  148. Then while I might look like a group, it's not
  149. gonna function like one evader self confessor, right, that someone
  150. who's not answering questions or not participating and then self
  151. confessor, someone who justice saying things all the time.
  152. And sometimes we think, wouldn't that be good if someone's
  153. like confessing things all the time?
  154. But there's a hesitation there.
  155. If somebody just keeps confessing things all the time, they
  156. might perhaps want the group to just expedite and get
  157. to the end.
  158. If I just share everything right away, then I'll be
  159. done with it, or they might be saying it in
  160. a way to get it off their chest.
  161. But they're not really caring about how others receive it.
  162. But again, that's it's a role.
  163. This specific role is self focused.
  164. It's not group focused, and the Playboy Playgirl is someone
  165. who's just there to have a good time.
  166. They're just they're just here for the good time.
  167. I'm here for the free coffees.
  168. I'm here for whatever, but I'm not here to actually
  169. do anything right, because it's about them feeling good, having
  170. fun. They're not taking it seriously and so again, being
  171. aware of those things.
  172. And these were individual roles that are dysfunctional and aren't
  173. going to help the group move forward but are actually
  174. gonna hold the group's.
  175. Still, because of these individual roles aren't group focused, and
  176. sometimes the other group members might call it out.
  177. But as leaders, we need to be aware of them.
  178. We need a monitor those and then if they keep
  179. going on, they become resistant behaviors and resistant members.
  180. And in our next video, we look at how to
  181. respond to that resistance.
  182. And so those remember rules the task girls in the
  183. relationship rules or functional roles at Volker.
  184. Well, the individual rules are dysfunctional roles that when we
  185. begin to see them we need to take note of
  186. them and we need to respond to them somehow.
  187. And so check out the next video about resisting are
  188. resistant the haters and resistant behavior, behaviors and members or
  189. the common behaviors, and that will help you have some
  190. better understanding of how to respond to some of these
  191. dysfunctional rules that members take on.
  192. I hope that's been helpful, and I look forward to
  193. hearing from you in the discussion by
