00:01 - 00:03
Hi, my name is Mona Jacobs.
00:03 - 00:07
And today I will be discussing my future in computer science.
00:08 - 00:10
Now, what is computer science?
00:10 - 00:16
Computer science is the study of the principles and use of computers
00:17 - 00:19
under this comes pro many
00:19 - 00:21
programming languages,
00:21 - 00:22
algorithms
00:22 - 00:24
A I
00:24 - 00:25
and
00:25 - 00:29
many other technological technological aspects
00:30 - 00:32
that are used to create
00:32 - 00:35
different tools such as websites,
00:36 - 00:37
apps,
00:39 - 00:40
presentation,
00:41 - 00:43
uh websites and
00:43 - 00:44
so on.
00:44 - 00:49
Computer science is very vital, especially with today's ongoing use
00:49 - 00:50
of
00:51 - 00:55
uh technology as well as the many innovations that we have today.
00:57 - 00:59
Now, why did I choose
00:59 - 01:02
a major in computer science?
01:02 - 01:08
Well, in high school, I took my first ever computer science class
01:08 - 01:11
um which was under video game design
01:12 - 01:17
and in video game design. I learned my first programming language called C#
01:17 - 01:22
and with this language, I learned how to develop two D video games.
01:23 - 01:26
I learned my first algorithms.
01:27 - 01:29
I started learning problem solving
01:30 - 01:33
and realized how much I enjoyed actually doing that.
01:35 - 01:37
There's always a new challenge
01:37 - 01:42
every single day and it's very stressful at times,
01:42 - 01:45
but it is rewarding to figure it out.
01:46 - 01:49
And overall brought me to loving
01:50 - 01:51
computer science.
01:52 - 01:54
Now, my degree plan
01:55 - 01:59
um requires me to have 124 credit hours.
02:01 - 02:03
And with this amount of credit hours,
02:03 - 02:06
51 of those are for my major and
02:06 - 02:09
these are all computer science classes which range from
02:09 - 02:12
the programming language C++
02:12 - 02:15
um all the way to,
02:17 - 02:18
to me
02:19 - 02:23
getting into graphic design, web design
02:23 - 02:24
and
02:24 - 02:26
many other aspects of
02:26 - 02:27
programming.
02:30 - 02:36
Along with these 51 hours, I am required to have 29 hours of
02:36 - 02:38
math and sciences
02:39 - 02:44
and 42 credit hours of the basic classes required.
02:44 - 02:45
Um
02:45 - 02:49
As far as um the general studies of being
02:49 - 02:51
a college student at TSU
02:54 - 02:57
as far as scholarships and internships,
02:57 - 02:58
um
02:58 - 03:02
basically any technolo technology company
03:03 - 03:05
in based in stem
03:05 - 03:07
uh companies or
03:08 - 03:11
just programs dedicated
03:11 - 03:12
to
03:12 - 03:17
helping finance, those who are um in need of
03:17 - 03:21
more money to continue to pursue schooling,
03:21 - 03:24
provide scholarships for STEM students.
03:25 - 03:28
One of the main scholarships I will be high highlighting
03:28 - 03:34
is the generation Google scholarship and this scholarship provides $10,000 to
03:35 - 03:36
women of color
03:37 - 03:38
that are pursuing a career
03:38 - 03:41
in computer science or
03:41 - 03:42
engineering
03:42 - 03:45
or any other stem related
03:46 - 03:47
ve
03:49 - 03:52
as far as internships go, it goes the same way.
03:53 - 03:57
Many stem related companies provide internships for
03:57 - 03:59
STEM majors
04:00 - 04:03
and provide ample experience,
04:04 - 04:07
which is very exciting because
04:07 - 04:12
you get to work closely with those who are professionals in the field already
04:12 - 04:16
um to work on research assignments and
04:16 - 04:20
other things that will provide plenty
04:20 - 04:25
of exposure before getting a career in computer science.
04:27 - 04:31
Now, the origins of computer science date back to around 1941
04:31 - 04:32
and
04:32 - 04:35
the first binary computer was created by
04:36 - 04:37
Conrad
04:38 - 04:38
Zeus.
04:39 - 04:43
He also created the first programming language through calculus.
04:45 - 04:47
The first English based
04:48 - 04:51
programming language came out in 1951
04:51 - 04:54
and this was created by Grace Hopper.
04:55 - 04:56
Grace Hopper
04:57 - 05:02
also created more programming language along languages along the line.
05:03 - 05:05
And as more languages developed,
05:05 - 05:10
we have gotten Microsoft Google, Facebook
05:11 - 05:13
and many other innovations out of
05:15 - 05:17
out of program languages.
05:19 - 05:21
Sorry, I had
05:21 - 05:21
a
05:22 - 05:23
brain freezer for a second
05:25 - 05:27
for the future in programming.
05:28 - 05:29
I
05:30 - 05:31
see myself
05:32 - 05:34
using my creativity and
05:34 - 05:36
all the all the
05:37 - 05:39
skills I learned in school
05:39 - 05:42
to create and innovate
05:43 - 05:47
new technological advancements and improvements.
05:50 - 05:51
I also
05:52 - 05:56
more importantly, want to inspire other black girls out there
05:57 - 05:58
to pursue a degree
05:59 - 06:01
in technology and know that it is
06:02 - 06:03
possible to finish
06:04 - 06:09
a degree in programming despite how rigorous and challenging it is
06:09 - 06:11
and that it is rewarding
06:11 - 06:15
to find new discoveries and that
06:15 - 06:17
in a world that's always changing,
06:18 - 06:21
there's always room for improvements and
06:21 - 06:22
you never know
06:22 - 06:23
what you can create.
