  1. Hello. My name is Maggie Surveyors, and I'm a member of Ideas Action Network.
  2. I retired in 2019 and really enjoyed the first few months of my retirement.
  3. No responsibilities, No getting up early. No getting dressed. It was fabulous.
  4. But soon I came to find out that really that is not enough for me.
  5. Um, purpose comes with giving back to society,
  6. learning new ways and at the same time sharing
  7. with what I have learned throughout my life.
  8. And with it came the realisation that I really didn't
  9. know how to do this third trimester of my life.
  10. So I joined Idols Action Network to learn what to do and
  11. and how how to create this important part of my life.
  12. And, boy, have I learned a lot. So today I am an aid us in training.
  13. And the part that I enjoy and focus on right now is regenerative living.
  14. To me,
  15. that means how do I live in harmony with the earth right now
  16. and at the same time regenerate what we are doing our traditions to,
  17. um stabilise and make possible a life for future generations a happy,
  18. happy and productive life.
  19. So that's what I'm learning right now.
  20. And I have created a wonderful tradition to me. It is wonderful.
  21. That is my, uh, Saturday morning farmer's market.
  22. And I would like to take you on a
  23. stroll through our farmers market on Saturday morning.
  24. So this is what it looks like and a friend of mine and I go early in the morning.
  25. Uh, we have about a mile and a half walk to get to the market.
  26. And first we visit these, um,
  27. the bakery stand. Wonderful stuff. I can I can smell it.
  28. It just and all the breads are gluten free and
  29. a marvellous and and really creative variety of breads.
  30. And next we visit the cheese shop.
  31. And and those those both of those stands are really, uh my trigger points.
  32. I really have to be mindful. That's why we go there early.
  33. So they still have some willpower to be mindful of what and how much I buy there.
  34. Next we go ahead and visit Mark. He is the vegetable.
  35. The local biggest vegetable grower.
  36. Mark recently retired from the electricity company.
  37. He doesn't care for humans all that much,
  38. but he loves being out in the field and and working and with his vegetables.
  39. And it's just beautiful, beautiful things.
  40. And he always has something new and creative.
  41. Next we visit Amy. Amy, um, has a special thing going with her chickens.
  42. They are They are a unit.
  43. Uh, the chickens produce beautiful legs, and we certainly do enjoy those.
  44. Um, Jackie is is our fish lady.
  45. Her husband is a fisherman, and she brings to the market all the most recent catches,
  46. and she doesn't always have a lot of things.
  47. And it all depends on on what they could catch, uh, within the last few days.
  48. And, uh, but it is fresh. It is beautiful. The red snapper out of this world
  49. and then on the upper right hand side. You see, James James is our mushroom guy.
  50. Um, a friend of his, um, and and and his and, uh,
  51. James family have a mushroom farm up in Virginia,
  52. and so he flies in all kinds of varieties of mushrooms
  53. on on Fridays to bring it to the market on Saturdays.
  54. And really interesting is that he shares the health benefits
  55. of the different mushrooms and and how to best prepare them
  56. Same thing is true for Brenda, Brenda and her sister of retired physical therapist.
  57. And they just they are into the lettuces,
  58. so they have all varieties of letters and herbs,
  59. and it just again we we get the storey, we we know them, they know us.
  60. And we get the storey of what really were the challenges this week.
  61. Was it too much water? Too little water.
  62. And but, you know, and then really appreciate what they brought to the market.
  63. And we know how hard they worked. And we really, uh, it tastes differently that way.
  64. Now, second, Brenda has, uh, the spices.
  65. She has all the basic spices,
  66. but then her specialty is creating those spices to create different flavours.
  67. So when you just put this on on your fish
  68. and and just just the spice creates a different experience,
  69. different smell and and certainly different different tastes.
  70. Beauty about Brenda spices is that all of them are solid free.
  71. Our specialty stands are the kimchi, the smoked salmon, and then interesting,
  72. of course, is the, uh honey, those This is local honey.
  73. And again, you know,
  74. the storey and the different sizes and the
  75. different packages and the work and the creativity.
  76. Uh, it just makes it. It just makes it different
  77. now. The favourite guy, this is Bob.
  78. He's the favourite guy of all the four legged friends.
  79. And we have plenty of those at the market on Saturday morning.
  80. The one the little cat that you see in the left hand on the left hand corner.
  81. There is certainly the only cat that I've seen there, but plenty of dogs.
  82. They all come to see him. His mom is the baker.
  83. She makes the doggy biscuits with all natural ingredients,
  84. and it just dogs absolutely love them.
  85. And then it just comes to the enjoyment and the community building.
  86. Because where where can you go on a Saturday morning at eight o'clock, enjoy jazz,
  87. do a little dancing, have your coffee, have a little, uh,
  88. danish from the from the bake shop and just sit back and relax and enjoy.
  89. So to me, farmers markets are essential.
  90. They are an essential part for my idea of regenerative living.
  91. So it can easily be the first step. It was for me.
  92. And, um, it is also not not just simply about how how I eat. Now.
  93. I think about food, what I know about food.
  94. But it also is being part of the community and enjoying community.
  95. Thank you very much.
