00:00 - 00:01
Hello, fourth graders.
00:02 - 00:04
This is such an exciting day because it's our first
00:05 - 00:09
lesson in our up the ladder fiction unit, the first
00:10 - 00:11
reading workshop unit of the year.
00:12 - 00:15
We're going to be focusing on choosing books that are
00:15 - 00:16
just right.
00:17 - 00:19
When I think of just right, I always think of
00:19 - 00:21
Goldilocks and the three there.
00:21 - 00:23
So that's why you see that picture right there?
00:24 - 00:24
All right.
00:24 - 00:27
Before we move on any further with this lesson, I
00:28 - 00:31
want to ask you a couple of things to rate.
00:31 - 00:33
We're going to use the scale 1 to 10 1
00:34 - 00:38
being not at all 10 being Ah, Holton.
00:39 - 00:41
Okay, so here the here's the first one I want
00:42 - 00:42
you to rate.
00:42 - 00:44
How much do you like having a friend?
00:45 - 00:49
Press pause, Go to your digital notebook and jack down
00:49 - 00:51
your rating on the Post It note that I left
00:52 - 00:53
you And then when you're ready, press play.
00:55 - 00:57
Okay. The next one is How much do you like
00:58 - 00:59
reading again?
00:59 - 01:00
Press pause.
01:01 - 01:04
Go to your digital notebook and rate reading 1 to
01:05 - 01:07
10 and then press play again when you're finished.
01:09 - 01:12
So I'm guessing since I can't see what you wrote
01:13 - 01:15
at the time that I'm Rick ordering recording this.
01:15 - 01:19
But I'm guessing that a lot of you wrote down
01:20 - 01:24
10 or near 10 at least for how much you
01:25 - 01:25
like having a friend.
01:27 - 01:30
But I'm also guessing there might be, Ah, handful of
01:30 - 01:35
you who rated reading at ah, or or five or
01:35 - 01:36
maybe even a six.
01:37 - 01:40
And I want to tell you that you know what
01:40 - 01:40
I understand.
01:41 - 01:41
I get it.
01:42 - 01:44
I can remember when I was in school.
01:45 - 01:49
Sometimes my teacher teachers made me read books that I
01:49 - 01:50
didn't have any choice about.
01:50 - 01:52
I had to read the one that gave me and
01:53 - 01:55
I just didn't like them.
01:55 - 01:56
I wasn't interested in them.
01:57 - 01:58
Or maybe it was too hard.
01:59 - 02:00
And you know what?
02:00 - 02:03
The other thing I didn't like about was these worksheets.
02:04 - 02:06
I have to read a passage or read a book
02:06 - 02:08
and then answer a whole bunch of questions about what
02:08 - 02:09
I was reading.
02:09 - 02:11
And it's sort of just, I don't know, took the
02:11 - 02:12
fun out of it all.
02:12 - 02:14
So I get it.
02:14 - 02:17
If reading wasn't a town of 10 for you, but
02:17 - 02:20
I have to tell you that my goal by the
02:20 - 02:23
end of the year, the end of the month, even
02:24 - 02:27
or this unit is to get you to rate reading
02:27 - 02:29
as a 10 out of 10.
02:30 - 02:33
I'm gonna move heaven and earth to make that happen
02:33 - 02:33
this year.
02:34 - 02:36
However, I can't do it alone.
02:36 - 02:37
You've got to help me.
02:38 - 02:41
And the first way you help me with that is
02:41 - 02:44
by choosing books that are just right for you.
02:45 - 02:48
So let's dive in and talk about how we go
02:48 - 02:49
about doing that.
02:52 - 02:54
So what I want to teach you today is probably
02:55 - 02:57
nothing that you didn't already know.
02:58 - 03:00
I want to tell you that there are some so
03:00 - 03:01
so books out there.
03:01 - 03:04
But then there are some really great books out there,
03:04 - 03:08
too. And if you want to rate reading as a
03:08 - 03:10
10 out of 10 you've got to go find those
03:11 - 03:13
books that are just perfect for you.
03:14 - 03:19
And you go about doing that, um, by thinking about
03:19 - 03:22
what types of books you love, what kind of characters
03:23 - 03:25
or plots draw you in and make you want to
03:25 - 03:26
turn the next page?
03:27 - 03:30
And also, you need to make sure that you have
03:30 - 03:32
books that are at the right level for you.
03:33 - 03:35
Not too hard, not too easy.
03:36 - 03:41
So let's talk a little bit more about that when
03:42 - 03:46
we're thinking about books that are too hard or too
03:46 - 03:48
easy. I am sure that some of you have been
03:48 - 03:49
in the same boat that I've been in.
03:50 - 03:53
I have read a book before that I thought was
03:53 - 03:53
going to be great.
03:53 - 03:55
And then I get going in it and some of
03:55 - 03:57
the words are just too hard.
03:57 - 04:00
And I spent all my time trying to figure out
04:00 - 04:02
how to say the words or even figure out what
04:02 - 04:05
the words mean, and it really slows me down, and
04:05 - 04:06
it makes me feel stuck.
04:08 - 04:10
Three other thing that happens to me with that is
04:10 - 04:15
that I can't read fluently anymore, and it just doesn't
04:15 - 04:16
sound good.
04:17 - 04:20
Um, I've also read books, and you probably have two
04:21 - 04:23
that are just too easy for me.
04:23 - 04:26
And while they might be fun to read because they're,
04:26 - 04:29
you know, old favorites of yours and there's nothing wrong
04:29 - 04:34
with that, they're not the just right book, either, because
04:34 - 04:38
when I fly through them, I they feel sort of
04:38 - 04:42
flat to me because I'm not really engaged in them.
04:43 - 04:47
I already you know, I don't have to stop and
04:47 - 04:48
think about what's happening.
04:49 - 04:53
Um, so books that were too hard and books that
04:53 - 04:57
are too easy neither one of those types of books
04:57 - 04:59
really make me feel like a strong reader.
05:00 - 05:03
So I need to find a book that's just at
05:03 - 05:06
my my just right level, right in the middle.
05:07 - 05:08
That Goldilocks sweet spot.
05:09 - 05:10
The other thing that I want to think about is
05:12 - 05:13
what interests me.
05:13 - 05:16
So if you like sports, you might want to choose
05:17 - 05:19
a story about a kid who loves sports.
05:20 - 05:23
Um, if you love to be terrified on roller coasters
05:24 - 05:26
or scary movies, then you might want to choose a
05:26 - 05:29
story that's more like, ah, thriller mystery.
05:31 - 05:33
So think about what interests you.
05:34 - 05:36
That's a really big part of finding the perfect book
05:37 - 05:40
when you're in this search for the just write a
05:40 - 05:43
book. So this is what I like to do.
05:44 - 05:48
First, I think about what kind of books have I
05:48 - 05:49
read in the past?
05:50 - 05:53
Um, I'm not really big on silly books.
05:55 - 05:58
Um, I prefer books that have really strong characters and
05:59 - 06:00
try to do the right thing.
06:01 - 06:03
Um, I prefer books.
06:03 - 06:04
They're page turners.
06:04 - 06:07
I just can't wait to get to the next part.
06:07 - 06:08
Love that.
06:08 - 06:12
I know this might sound strange, but I love books
06:12 - 06:13
that have short chapters.
06:14 - 06:17
This way I can read through to the end of
06:17 - 06:20
the chapter and have a good stopping point so that
06:20 - 06:22
whenever I need to go and do something else, I
06:22 - 06:24
don't feel like I've left it in the middle of
06:25 - 06:27
something. So I really do love books that have shorter
06:28 - 06:31
chapters. Um, let's see what else?
06:31 - 06:32
Oh, you know what?
06:32 - 06:34
You could also think about things that you don't like.
06:34 - 06:38
I really am not that into SciFi or anything like
06:39 - 06:39
that. Don't get me wrong.
06:40 - 06:41
Once in a while, I try something different.
06:42 - 06:45
Um, and I have been surprised, but normally it's not
06:46 - 06:46
my thing.
06:47 - 06:50
Um, I know that I love historical fiction, so that's
06:50 - 06:52
really a go to for me whenever I'm looking for
06:52 - 06:55
a new book, and also I listen to what other
06:56 - 06:56
people have told me.
06:57 - 07:00
I talk about books a lot with my friends and
07:00 - 07:00
my family.
07:00 - 07:05
We share books, so I really take the recommendations of
07:05 - 07:06
people pretty seriously.
07:07 - 07:10
And there's all kinds of websites and things like that
07:10 - 07:13
that you confined recommendations on to so recommendations from others.
07:14 - 07:17
That usually leads me in a good direction as well.
07:19 - 07:23
So when we go ahead and try to find books
07:24 - 07:27
this year, it might look a little different than what
07:27 - 07:28
it's been in years past.
07:29 - 07:32
I think, typically a ZX fourth graders.
07:32 - 07:34
By now you know that we would probably go to
07:34 - 07:36
our classroom library and pull out a bit of books
07:37 - 07:40
and sort through it and try to find, you know,
07:41 - 07:41
one that interests us.
07:42 - 07:46
And, um, you may or may not be able to
07:46 - 07:46
do that.
07:47 - 07:49
I know those of you who are learning with me
07:50 - 07:53
in my class were all at home virtual, so that's
07:53 - 07:54
not really a possibility for us.
07:55 - 07:57
But there are lots of ways to find books.
07:58 - 08:00
If you do have books at home, you certainly can
08:00 - 08:02
can do this process with books that you have at
08:02 - 08:06
home. Um, we all have access to epic digital books.
08:06 - 08:10
We have access to SORA, which is sort of like
08:10 - 08:14
a digital online library through links toe learning with our
08:15 - 08:19
intermediate library website, and you really can go out and
08:19 - 08:22
get ah library card at the Hudson Balls Library or
08:22 - 08:23
the Crandall Library.
08:24 - 08:26
I'm not sure if you can go into the library
08:26 - 08:28
just yet, but I know that you can order books
08:29 - 08:31
from them online and then go pick them up curbside.
08:32 - 08:35
So there are other options out there for us, even
08:36 - 08:38
if we can't go grab a bit of books from
08:38 - 08:38
a shelf.
08:40 - 08:40
Now, let's see.
08:41 - 08:46
Um, if I was to have a been or maybe
08:46 - 08:49
be at the library searching on the shelf before a
08:49 - 08:51
book, um, I might take a look at the cover.
08:51 - 08:53
Now, I know they have that raised Never judge a
08:53 - 08:55
book by its cover, But you know what?
08:55 - 08:56
It is important.
08:57 - 09:01
Um, there's a serious called amulet that I know a
09:01 - 09:03
lot of my fourth graders last year were reading, and
09:03 - 09:05
that we're into is a graphic novel very into.
09:06 - 09:09
And I remember on the first book in this series,
09:09 - 09:13
there is, like, this big active, post looking thing on
09:13 - 09:13
the cover.
09:14 - 09:16
And when I saw when my students reading, I thought,
09:16 - 09:19
Oh, that is definitely not a book for me.
09:19 - 09:22
That was just no way that that looks a little
09:22 - 09:23
creepy to me.
09:23 - 09:26
So that's probably one that I would steer away from,
09:27 - 09:29
but not only looking at the picture on the cover.
09:29 - 09:31
I also look at the back, and I read this
09:31 - 09:34
summary that gives me great information in a place to
09:34 - 09:39
start. So there's this other series called Diamond Daniel and
09:40 - 09:41
on the back I haven't written down here.
09:42 - 09:43
There's a little blurb on the back of the book,
09:44 - 09:48
and it says that, um, Diamond has a can do
09:48 - 09:50
attitude and awesome brainpower.
09:51 - 09:54
And so to me, she sounds like a really strong
09:54 - 09:57
character and probably one that I would want to learn
09:57 - 09:57
more about.
09:58 - 10:00
So that would probably be a book that I would
10:00 - 10:02
pull off of the shelf or out of the bin
10:02 - 10:04
and start reading a few pages in the book.
10:05 - 10:08
Um, don't just rely on the summary, get right in
10:08 - 10:10
there and read Effort the first few pages of the
10:11 - 10:13
book and see what it's like before you decide whether
10:14 - 10:15
you think it might be for you or not.
10:17 - 10:21
Okay, so zoom in on this because I want you
10:21 - 10:24
to get a good look at it, how to find
10:24 - 10:26
books that are really just right for you.
10:27 - 10:29
You want to make sure that they aren't too hard
10:30 - 10:30
or too easy.
10:31 - 10:33
You want to make sure they're the kinds of books
10:33 - 10:33
that you like.
10:35 - 10:38
Ah, the characters and the plot should pull you in
10:38 - 10:39
and make you want to turn that page.
10:40 - 10:43
And finally others might have recommended them to you.
10:44 - 10:47
So your job for the next 10 minutes is, however
10:48 - 10:50
you are able to do this, I want you to
10:50 - 10:53
go in search off a good book that you're going
10:53 - 10:55
to want to sit down and read with.
10:55 - 10:58
So use all of those strategies that I just talked
10:58 - 10:58
to you about.
10:59 - 11:01
Find a book that you think is going to be
11:01 - 11:02
just right for you.
11:03 - 11:04
Take about 10 minutes.
11:04 - 11:05
Set a timer.
11:05 - 11:07
Really? Because that's what I would do for you if
11:07 - 11:07
I was with you.
11:08 - 11:10
Set a timer for about 10 minutes, and then once
11:11 - 11:14
you find a book, just sit down, dig in and
11:14 - 11:18
start reading, and you should probably read for about 20
11:19 - 11:19
minutes or so.
11:20 - 11:22
So all in all, it would be about 30 minutes,
11:23 - 11:26
10 minutes to find a just right book, and then
11:26 - 11:27
a good 20 minutes or maybe more.
11:28 - 11:30
If you find one quickly, where you're just sitting down
11:31 - 11:32
and reading this book.
11:34 - 11:36
If you start a book and you think you maybe
11:36 - 11:38
this wasn't a great choice, then go ahead back.
11:39 - 11:39
Now is the time.
11:40 - 11:42
And try another one that you that you might have
11:43 - 11:47
come across when you're finished with that 30 minutes total,
11:48 - 11:49
you're going to want to go back to your digital
11:49 - 11:53
notebook and find the spot right at the end where
11:53 - 11:55
it says share because we are going to be having
11:56 - 11:57
shares with each other.
11:57 - 11:59
Digital shares were going to be using flip grid.
12:00 - 12:02
So you wanna click that link and head over to
12:02 - 12:05
flip grid to participate in our share?
12:05 - 12:08
All right, everybody enjoy your books and have a great
12:08 - 12:09
time reading.
