  1. welcome to the first meditation on Pastor Rossi.
  2. Sermon. Siri's Lord teach us to pray, and I'm going
  3. to do this by way of what I call a
  4. framework, which I took from Chapter one of a book
  5. called Ah Called Spiritual Reformation by D.
  6. A. Carson.
  7. Um, Chapter one is titled Lessons From the School of
  8. Prayer. The chapter has really, really helped me in my
  9. prayer life, and particularly in the practical aspects of it.
  10. And so I would like to pick out a few
  11. points Pastor Rossi made in the sermons of the past
  12. couple of weeks and then to give what I think
  13. might be some helpful ways to do exactly what he
  14. said. Pastor Rossi said.
  15. It's easy to talk about prayer, very easy to talk
  16. about prayer, but it's an awful hard thing to do.
  17. And one of the reasons Pastor Rossi gave in his
  18. first tournament on this was that we forget God, and
  19. it's really not too surprising that we do this because
  20. the Bible in a number of places, reminds us to
  21. remember to remember.
  22. One of the places that is really clear about this
  23. is when Moses is going into the promised land.
  24. And he's giving his final speech.
  25. Remember how maney or think about how many times he
  26. says not to forget and to remember?
  27. I think you'll count up at least four or five
  28. times when he says Assess that.
  29. The other thing that is really Ah, interesting to me
  30. anyway is that we have such ordinances as the Lord's
  31. Supper, which are designed, I think, to help us remember
  32. to remember and, ah, as the pastor district to the
  33. elements and we begin to partake of them.
  34. Remember the phrase.
  35. Do this in remembrance of me Now as we plan
  36. to pray.
  37. Ah, the underlying reason for the motivation for doing this
  38. is that it is the will of God for you.
  39. First Thessalonians, 5 16 through 18 says Rejoice.
  40. Always pray continually give thanks in all circumstances.
  41. For this, a Scots will for you in Christ Jesus,
  42. it is the will of God for you.
  43. Wow, that's really cool.
  44. And to think the Gadd actually wants us to pray,
  45. he invites us into his presence and his pastor, Rossi
  46. reminded us in the second sermon in this series, we're
  47. praying to our father in heaven who delights in relationship
  48. with its adopted Children.
  49. But it's hard work.
  50. No one drifts into discipline prayer.
  51. And yet we have plenty of examples in Scripture of
  52. Prayer, such as those of Daniel and Jesus, Paul, Samuel,
  53. Mary and so on.
  54. So it's not like we don't have any instruction on
  55. the matter on how to do it.
  56. To summarize, since we're naturally drawn away from remembering God,
  57. we need to plan to pray.
  58. Set aside a time of each day that works for
  59. you, whether it's morning, afternoon, evening.
  60. Ah, pick a time that works for you and your
  61. particular time of life.
  62. Since it's such a hard discipline to play, there are
  63. some things that weaken due to six to be successful
  64. at at it.
  65. Once we actually end to the practice of it.
  66. One of the things that happens, at least for me.
  67. Ah, and I'm sure it must happen to you as
  68. well is we begin to think of other things as
  69. we begin to pet pray.
  70. And so there There are some things we can do
  71. to do what I, uh or what d a Carson
  72. calls impede mental drift.
  73. And here are a few of them.
  74. Now I'll go right down to number three on the
  75. list because that is what Pastor Rossi mentioned to us
  76. in one of his sermons.
  77. And that was to adopt his models several biblical prayers.
  78. And he gave us several references in the scripture of
  79. people who prayed, and we can kind of look at
  80. those prayers.
  81. And as as we read through them, we can pray
  82. them as they apply to our particular situation on what's
  83. going on in our own hearts.
  84. You can also vocalize your prayers.
  85. The I just the active.
  86. Saying them out loud is a way of helping us
  87. to concentrate, pray over the scriptures, take other particular passages
  88. of Scripture and some of the doctrine of some of
  89. the practices.
  90. Some of the warnings that Paul gives, particularly in his
  91. letters, those Air Andy also to help us to concentrate
  92. on what we're to pray about.
  93. You can pray through the worship sections of a good
  94. him. No, there's a lot of good theology there.
  95. You can pray while walking around the neighborhood, and as
  96. you reminded about your neighbors and just enjoying God's creation,
  97. you can, of course, Prezi him for his marvelous works.
  98. You can journal your prayers, and this way it enforces
  99. a slower pace.
  100. And if you're writing, you're not daydreaming, fostering self examination
  101. and, uh, some other things, which, if you haven't seen
  102. it yet, you ought to look at Reverend Brambles, um,
  103. little video on his experience with journaling your prayers.
  104. Well, I think the one final thing I want to
  105. talk about is related to Pastor Rossi's admonition to not
  106. just talk about praying, but to actually pray.
  107. And the manner of prayer is Do pray until you
  108. pray D A.
  109. Carson says Christian should pray long enough and honestly enough
  110. at a single session to get past the feeling of
  111. formalism and on to reality to enter the spirit of
  112. a prayer.
  113. I'm sorry to get past the feeling of formalism and
  114. un reality to enter the spirit of praying.
  115. We must stick to it for a while, and certainly
  116. that is something which most of us, I would guess,
  117. experience as dullness in our prayers or a kind of
  118. formality toe our prayers, Pastor Rossi mentioned um, in the
  119. second sermon on this Siri's that we need to meditate
  120. on Scripture and remind ourselves again.
  121. Who it is that we're praying to.
  122. We address a father who's a forgiving father.
  123. Our father dwells and majesty in heavenly places.
  124. And we are his Children in part of a family.
  125. He is a father who cares for our anxiety.
  126. Our heavenly father desires not just a formal, legalistic kind
  127. of prayer, but the kind of prayer that believes in
  128. the reality of a relationship with a sovereign God.
  129. And it was able to grant all that we ask
  130. that is good for us once.
  131. Remind yourselves again of some of these wonderful truce.
  132. Our hearts will be endeared again once again toward God.
  133. And our prayers will begin to become a wonderful means
  134. of deepening our relationship with our heavenly Father.
  135. And we will begin to understand what the Puritans meant
  136. when they encouraged one another to pray until you pray.
  137. Thanks past, Arazi, for leading us in these reminders about
  138. the manner and content of our prayers.
  139. Until next time May God bless you
