Chapter 1
Modeling how to use the Glossary and Index text features.
Audio Transcript
00:00 - 00:03
In the last video we learned about nonfiction text
00:03 - 00:06
features such as the glossary and the index.
00:06 - 00:07
In
00:07 - 00:11
this video. I'm going to model how we utilize
00:11 - 00:16
or use these text features to help us understand what we're reading about.
00:17 - 00:19
Here is a nonfiction book about bees.
00:21 - 00:22
Hello, bees,
00:24 - 00:25
bees are bugs that fly.
00:26 - 00:28
They make a buzzing sound.
00:30 - 00:33
Bees have striped bodies. They have one pair of wings.
00:33 - 00:36
Some bees have sharp stingers. Hm.
00:37 - 00:40
I've noticed that there is a word that is highlighted in a different color
00:41 - 00:42
in other books.
00:42 - 00:46
The words might be in bold meaning darker than the other letters.
00:48 - 00:51
This means that this word is important
00:52 - 00:54
and so we will find it
00:54 - 00:55
or we can find it
00:55 - 00:56
in the glossary.
00:59 - 01:01
Bees live in big groups.
01:01 - 01:04
They build nests in trees or rocks.
01:05 - 01:08
A bee nest is called a hive.
01:10 - 01:13
Bees. Pick up pollen and nectar from flowers.
01:14 - 01:15
They make nectar into honey.
01:16 - 01:21
I noticed there are two more words that are highlighted in a different color.
01:21 - 01:24
This must mean that they are very important
01:26 - 01:27
pollen and nectar.
01:29 - 01:33
A baby bee comes out of an egg first. It looks like a worm
01:34 - 01:35
but it grows quickly
01:36 - 01:38
bees fly around to find food.
01:39 - 01:40
They keep the hive clean,
01:41 - 01:43
they feed baby bees
01:44 - 01:45
good babies.
01:48 - 01:49
Here is a diagram
01:50 - 01:52
that shows the different parts of a bee
01:53 - 01:56
and each part of the body is labeled.
01:57 - 02:02
This also helps us understand more about the bee.
02:08 - 02:09
We've reached the glossary
02:11 - 02:14
rather than saying glossary. It says words to know.
02:14 - 02:18
This is just another way of saying glossary
02:19 - 02:21
underneath words to know.
02:22 - 02:25
You can see that the words are in abc order.
02:26 - 02:28
It starts with the word nectar.
02:29 - 02:30
Nectar
02:30 - 02:32
is a sweet liquid that flowers make
02:33 - 02:34
pollen,
02:35 - 02:37
a yellow powder that flowers make
02:38 - 02:41
stingers, pointy body parts
02:41 - 02:42
that can sting.
02:43 - 02:47
Now, I know what these words mean
02:48 - 02:52
and the information in the pages make a little bit more sense.
02:54 - 02:55
Now
02:55 - 02:57
we've reached the index.
02:57 - 03:01
The index is a list of topics that are found in the book
03:02 - 03:03
that we've already read
03:04 - 03:07
next to the topics are page numbers.
03:08 - 03:12
If we ever want to go back to a specific page,
03:13 - 03:14
we can look in the index
03:15 - 03:16
and find the page number,
03:20 - 03:23
then we can go back to that page number
03:23 - 03:25
and read more on that topic.
03:29 - 03:33
As you can see the glossary index are very important text features.
03:34 - 03:37
They truly help us understand more
03:38 - 03:39
about what we're reading.
03:40 - 03:41
I hope this video
03:41 - 03:43
really helps you
03:43 - 03:46
on how to use these text features
03:46 - 03:47
when it's time to do it on your own.
